Taking hold of his arm, he declared that the boy had been feeding upon the smell of their food. He asked the boy to pay half the price of a meal. The poor fellow said that he neither could nor would pay.

At that moment, a police happened to pass. He said to the boy, “You have been feasting one your of your senses with the good smell of this man’s meat, you should satisfy one of his senses. How much money do you have?” “I have only two pence in all the world, sir and I must buy some bread.”

“Never mind,” answered the policeman, “Take your two pence between your hands. Now rattle them loudly.”

The boy did so, and the officer, turning to the cook, said, “Now, sir, I think he had paid you the smell of your delicious food. The smell of your food rewarded his nostrils and the sound of his money rewarded your ears.”

During Paleolithic times man became man by learning to speak, to make tools and to use fire. This gave him an enormous advantage over other animals about him. Yet in one fundamental respect he remained alike to them. He was still a hunter among other hunters. He was still a food gatherer as were countless other species that were completely dependent on the bounty of nature. And being dependent on the nature, he was dominated by nature. He had to be constantly on the move in order to follow animals and to locate fishing grounds. He had to live in small groups because not many could find enough food to support themselves in a given area if he lived alone. It is estimated that even in fertile areas with a mild winter, only one or two food collectors could support themselves per square mile. And twenty or even thirty square

miles were needed for each human soul in regions of cold climate, tropical jungle or desert.

Such dependence on nature left its mark on all aspects of human society. But this dependence was greatly reduced when man made the epochal discovery that he could feed himself by growing his food as well as by gathering it. In doing so a new world with a bright future opened before him, as he left behind him the Paleolithic stage of his development and entered the Neolithic. 16. Which of the following is not the advantage of man in Paleolithic times? A. Learning to speaking B. Making tools C. Using fire D. Being hunters 17.? A. The development of agriculture contributed a lot in the history of human beings B. The development of agriculture was helpful for human language ability C. The purpose of this part of the book is to help you become more efficient in reading by speeding up the process generally. Most people can learn to cover material much faster than they do now while maintaining a high level of comprehension.

Improvement in reading efficiency has several major benefits. We need reading skills to benefit from the wealth of information that is now available in printed form. Most people get the rough outlines of their daily news from television and radio. However, the printed word still provides the in-depth coverage of topics that really produces well-informed people. Reading is also a great source of entertainment for many people. For students, it is the primary method of studying.

The time you now spend reading can be made much more productive by increasing your reading rate. For some people this will mean that they can obtain more information in the same length of time. For others it will mean that time now devoted to reading can be used in other more interesting and profitable ways.

To determine how fast you are reading, you first have to get some idea of the number of words in a given passage. Then you simply divide the number of words by the number of minutes it takes to read. That will give your rate in words per minute. 21. The passage is taken from ____________________. A. a story book B. a news report

B. dividing the total number of words a reader read by the time he spends on reading C. timing how many minutes a reader has read D. asking help from the teacher Passage 4

The earliest settlers came to the North American continent to establish colonies which were free from the controls that existed in European societies. They wanted to escape the controls by kings, governments, priests, churches, and noblemen. To a great extent, they succeeded. In 1776 the British colonial settlers declared their independence from England and established a new nation, the United Stated of America. In so doing, they overthrew the king of England and declared that the power to govern would lie in the hands of the people. They were now free from the power of kings. In 1787, when they wrote the Constitutions for their new nation, they separated church and state so that there would never be a government-supported church. This greatly limited the power of the church. Also, in writing the Constitution they expressly forbade titles of nobility to ensure that an aristocratic society would not develop. There would be no ruling class of noblemen in the new nation.

The historic decisions made by those first settlers have had a profound effect on the shaping of the American character. By limiting the power of the government and the churches and eliminating a formal aristocracy, they created a climate of freedom where the emphasis was on the individual. The United States came to be associated in their minds with the concept of individual freedom. This is probably the most basic of all the American values. Scholars and outside observers often call this value “individualism,” but many Americans use the word “freedom”. Perhaps the word “freedom” is one of the most respected popular words in the United States today. 26. The colonial settlers in North America _______________________.
