Here is a collection of some TV series. For this list, we stick to those that have been released in recent years and we choose not to include TV hits like Game

of Thrones or Sherlock.

Stranger Things

This US television series is a combination of three genres (类型): the typical college movies where the losers rise up, the science fiction films about crazy scientists who reached their top in the 1980s and the horror movies written in the style of Stephen King. This show, starring Winona Ryder and a group of amazing kids, has managed to combine these genres so well that it has already acquired a vast army of fans worldwide.

The Pillars of the Earth

It is set in the twelfth century, a time which is considered one of the darkest and most romantic (浪漫的) periods in the history of England. Based on the best-selling novel written by Ken Follett, this TV show starring the brilliant Eddie Redmayne is widely recognized as one of the best historical TV dramas of recent years.

Mahabharata

This Indian Hindi-language series is liked by many people for being regarded as the simplest and the most fun way to learn about the age-old wisdom of the Indian people. It tells us about the kings and heroes who love, fight and make wise decisions. This drama is about the endless struggle between good and evil.

The Crown

This story about the transformation of the young Princess Elizabeth into the queen shows everything about the British monarchy (君主制). It includes many storylines, each of which could be made into a separate TV show. The series focuses on the age-old themes of family, marriage and politics, and this is probably what makes The Crown

win popularity.

In London, on February 23, 1983, Emily Blunt was born into a family of high achievers. Her father was a successful lawyer, her mother — now a teacher — was formerly an actress, and her older sister, Felicity, excelled academically.

But Emily stuttered (口吃) terribly, and at the age of 12, the speaking problem caused her so much embarrassment that she stopped speaking altogether. One day a concerned teacher saw Emily imitating some of her classmates. He encouraged her to participate in a school play, using a different accent. She agreed, and according to Emily, “I didn't stutter once.”

At 16 she was dealt a very disappointing blow.Hoping to follow in her sister's academic footsteps, Emily applied to the famous Westminster School but was rejected.Little did she know that rejection would lead her to the place where her life would be changed forever!

Emily instead attended a college that specialized in the performing arts. While starring in a school play, she was spotted by talent agent Roger Charteris, who arranged for the 18-year-old to audition (试演) for a London play. The director found her to be determined and authentic and offered her a part.In 2001, with only six months of formal acting experience, Emily found herself performing alongside the famed Judi Dench!

Then she began landing roles on British TV and made her film debut (初次演出) in 2004.Two short years later, Emily won the part of a lifetime, playing Meryl Streep's assistant in The Devil Wears Prada.

An abundance of movie offers followed, including The Young Victoria, which earned Emily several nominations (提名) and awards for her portrayal of Queen Victoria.

Emily realizes now that those early setbacks led her to a place where she successfully followed her own dreams.

“When I think back to those times, I think to myself, without the disappointments I'd never be here!”

In the twentieth century, movie houses were springing up.Customers were happy to pay the price of a movie ticket, usually 10 cents, to see the latest moving picture show.At first, single reels (卷) of film were projected onto the big screen.By 1907, many reels of film were connected and presented as feature films.Early audiences were attracted into the movie houses not only by the western feature shown every Saturday but also by the promise of seeing still shots of themselves up on the big screen.

Traveling photographers earned a living, moving from town to town, taking photos of local people — especially children — and nearby scenes of interest to show on the screen of the local movie house.Eventually, these still shots of local people and places were replaced by newsreels of current news events, such as the world wars in Europe. These newsreels showed flickering (忽隐忽现的) images of real men going off to battle. The reels played before the main feature and were eagerly awaited reports of current events in the world.

The early features shown every Saturday and occasionally during the week were

silent films.A local, talented pianist usually sat in the front of the theater supplying a musical backdrop for the action.

Soon, the feature films were no longer silent: recorded sound was now possible, and the feature films were now referred to as “talkies” and became even more popular. The films were all in black and white, with color films not appearing until the late 1930s.

With the invention of air conditioning, movie theaters became cool places in summer's sultriest (最闷热的) weather. The theaters heavily advertised the cool comfort of the theaters, and summer ticket sales surged.Eager customers slipped in out of the heat and enjoyed the cooled air and watched the latest feature film.

Today, movie theaters remain cool places of sight and sound entertainment.Missing are the still photographs of local children or scenes. The only remaining clues as to their part in the development of the industry are faded copies of the original photographs now folded away in dusty family albums.
