Mark Twain,the famous American writer,was once traveling in France.He went by train to Dijon.He was very tired and wanted to sleep.He therefore asked the conductor to wake him up when the train came to Dijon.

But first he explained he was a very heavy sleeper,“I may possibly protest(抗议)loudly when you try to wake me up,” he said to the conductor.“But don’t take any notice of what I say.Just put me off the train anyway.”

Then Mark Twain went to sleep.Later,when he woke up it was night time and the train had reached Paris already.He realized at once that the conductor had forgotten to wake him up at Dijon.He was so angry that he ran to the conductor and began to shout at him.

“I have never been so angry in my life,” Mark Twain said.

The conductor looked at him calmly(平静地).“You are not half so angry as the American whom I put off the train at Dijon,” he said.

Edward Estlin Cummings is a well-known poet for how he wrote his poems.He wrote his poems in a very unusual way.He wrote poems with capital letters in the middle of words like the title of a poem called, “The little horse is newlY”.The “Y” is a capital letter.He also used “i” instead of “I” to refer to himself in the poems.

Edward was born on October 14, 1894 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.Edward’s father was also named Edward.Young Edward’s mother was named Rebecca.She loved to spend time with her children.She also taught Edward how to write poems.Edward’s sister

was born in 1896 and her name was Elizabeth.Edward’s father was the first professor of Sociology at Harvard University.He later became the minister of one of Boston’s most respected Unitarian Churches.He was the one who taught his son to use his hands as well as his mind.The way Edward used his hands was by painting abstract(抽象的) art.

E.E.Cummings was a very smart boy who had many interests.Edward was 12 when he became a freshman in high school.He loved circuses(马戏), ballets, operas, and playing the piano.Edward graduated from Harvard in 1916, when he joined the army and had to fight in World War Ⅰ.He was sent to France where he drove an ambulance.He and his friend from Harvard were arrested because people thought they were German spies, and later they were set free.

E.E.Cummings wrote his first book, published in 1922, called TheEnormousRoom, and based on his war time experiences.He was a poet that made his own rules in poetry, in spite of which he is remembered as an excellent voice of 20th century poetry.
