A vehicle, e.g. an autonomous taxi, receives a transport request indicating passenger and a pickup location, wherein at the pickup location the vehicle authenticates the passenger before unlocking the doors. The number of people entering and exiting the vehicle may be determined. The system may prevent passengers exiting at the wrong destination. A seat sensor or camera may determine the number of passengers or that no passengers remain inside.
Authenticating the passenger may include matching a unique identifier of a mobile device carried by the passenger with an identifier on a user profile or capturing an image of the passengers face using a vehicle mounted camera and using facial recognition to determine if it matches an image in a user profile.
