Rose-colored glasses get a bad name. Whenever I hear someone accused of having rose-colored glasses, it usually means they are unrealistically optimistic or ignoring reality. Maybe it’s true, but I believe everyone needs a pair of rose-colored glasses.

When I was eight, my second brother was born. I had long imagined all the cool things I would instruct him in, but it all crashed one day when my baby brother came to the world. On that day I knew he had mental disability. This was the second time. I was just 16 months old when my first brother was born. It never occurred to me to question his mental illness until I was six, when I became aware that I couldn’t teach my brother. For half a year I had eagerly looked forward to finally being in that role. Now it was gone. Clearly we would never be a “normal” family.

After a while I realized I had to let go of my expectations for him and get on with life. That’s when I put on my first pair of rose-colored glasses. Maybe we could still have that brotherly relationship and I could teach him some things, even if it wasn’t all that I first thought.

But the reality is that both brothers have taught me more about life than I could have ever imagined teaching them. I’ve had living examples right in front of me of what success really is, and what faith means. I’ve learned from my brothers whenever I put on a pair of rose-colored glasses. Forty years ago, nobody in our family imagined my brothers would live in their own homes with their own friends and hold jobs like anyone else, let alone be the teachers of life for others. The values I’ve learned from my brothers are what I call the gift — “the rose-colored glasses”. They have helped me look at the world in a different way without restrictions set by somebody else.

4. What did the author want to do before the birth of his second brother? A. Give him a pair of rose-colored glasses. B. Look after him as a big brother. C. Set him a good example. D. Teach him cool things.

2

5. How did the author feel when putting on his first pair of rose-colored glasses? A. Hopeful. B. Energetic. C. Cool. D. Curious.

6. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 really mean? A. Pretending to be happy.

B. Caring about the family affection. C. Looking from a different angle.

D. Escaping from the challenging reality.

7. In writing the passage, the author intends to show ________. A. his admiration for his brothers B. his former attitude to reality C. his own views on life D. his sense of responsibility

C

Firstborn kids may have better thinking skills compared with their siblings (兄弟姐妹), according to a recent study published in the Journal of Human Resources. You may be wondering what has caused it.

The data of the research is from approximately 5,000 U.S. children. Each child was assessed every two years in a number of categories that measured their thinking skills, from vocabulary to reading comprehension. The study also took into account the environmental factors like family background and economic status. The results revealed that firstborns scored higher on the tests, with the increased abilities starting as early as babyhood.

The study authors observed parental behavior as a potential way to determine why this pattern came out. Researchers used an assessment tool called the Home Observation Measurement of the Environment to measure parents’ pre-birth, pregnancy and post-birth behaviors, including factors such as their smoking habits and their emotional involvement with their kids.

Unsurprisingly, as parents had more children, their level of participation in things like reading, crafts and educational activities dissipated (消散) gradually. While children got equivalent amounts of emotional support, the eldest children generally received more assistance with tasks related to developing thinking skills.

The research supports the theory that firstborns are environmentally prepared to succeed academically and financially when they’re older. Previous studies suggest older kids are more likely to work hard for achievement and may be more successful than their siblings.

“Our results suggest that broad shifts in parental behavior are a seemingly reasonable explanation for the observed birth order differences in education and labor market outcomes,” said the lead study author Ana Nuevo-Chiquero.

However, don’t worry, younger kids. You still have advantages over your older siblings. Experts say middle children tend to be family peacekeepers, and the baby of the family is more creative and more social than his or her older brothers and sisters. 8. What is the topic of the text? A. Parents’ influence on kids. B. Different ways of parenting. C. Advantages of firstborn kids. D. Research on factors of success.

3

9. What may be the main cause of firstborn kids’ better thinking skills? A. Parents, health. B. Family relationship. C. Parents’ behavior.

D. Family background and economic status.

10. What can replace the underlined word “equivalent” in Paragraph 4? A. Decreasing. B. Equal. C. Enough. D. Significant.

11. What can be inferred from the text?

A. Younger kids are more likely to be talented. B. Younger kids are lucky to learn from elders. C. Older kids tend to be more lively and active. D. Parents’ involvement is key to kids’ growth.

D

Leadership effectiveness is decided by the FIT between a particular leader and the situation. As you Ml see, this simple fact has huge effects on choosing leaders, and developing them.

It means that a leader who is effective in one situation may be unsuccessful, or simply ineffective if that same person works within a different context. It means that it’s not possible to predict what person will be an effective leader in any particular further situation. Context, or “fit” is everything.

We like to think of our favorite leaders to be extremely effective, and so there’s a tendency to forget that most leaders, even those who are held up as role models for future leaders inevitably (不可避免地) failed about as much as they succeeded.

You’d think that it would be possible to identify, in advance, what “kind” of leader an organization needs, so it could be possible to choose a leader to fit for that time. Unfortunately, as I said, the only thing we know about leadership is that it all depends on the context. We simply are not able to predict, with any success, what person will thrive (繁荣,兴旺) in one leadership role, and not in another. That’s because not only are there so many contextual factors involved in determining that fit but we don’t even know what they are, or more importantly, how those factors (因素) influence each other. What we have is a situation that is so intricate that all the variables that determine success affect each other. Therefore, each “match” of leader to context variables is, in effect, a singularity, or in simple terms, unique.

It also means that a leader succeeding now may not be a success next year, not because his or her skills and abilities have gotten worse, or because he or she is no longer a \leader”, but because the needs of the organization, and the environment in which it operates have changed.

12. According to the text, what does leadership effectiveness depend on? A. The efforts to develop the leaders. B. The workers’ support to the leaders. C. The abilities and potential of the leaders. D. The environment the leaders work in. 13. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

4

A. A skill for a leader’s success. B. A reason for a leader’s failure. C. A way to choose the right leader. D. The importance of “fitting”.

14. According to the text, what do we tend to think of our favorite leaders? A. They should be held up as role models. B. They are good at solving problems. C. They need to make more progress. D. They may also meet with failures.

15. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 4 mean? A. Curious. B. Controversial. C. Complex. D. Desperate.
