The Statue of Liberty was put up in 1886. It was a present to the United States from the people of France. Over the years France and the United States had a special relationship. Passage Two
Questions 45 to 48 are based on the following passage
Parents whose children show a special interest in a sport feel very difficult to make a decision about their children’s careers. Should they allow their children to train to become top sports men or women? For many children it means starting schoolwork very young, and going out with friends and other interests have to take a second place. It is very difficult to explain to a young child why he or she has to train five hours a day, even at the weekend, when most of his or her friends are playing.
Another problem is of course money. In many countries money for training is available from government for the very best sportsmen or women. If this help cannot be given, it means that it is the parents who have to find the time and money to support their child’s development and sports clothes, transport to competitions, special equipment, etc, which can be very expensive.
Many parents are worried that it is dangerous to start serious training in a sport at an early age. Some doctors agree that young muscles must be damaged by training before they are properly developed. It is clear that very few people do reach the top, and both parents and children should be prepared for the failure even after many years of training. Professional trainers, however, believe that it is only by training young you can reach the top as a successful sports person.
45. This passage is probably taken from _________. A) a newspaper article B) a letter
C) a personal diary D) an advertisement
46. According to the passage, parents whose children show a special interest in a sport_______.
A) prefer their children to be trained as young as possible
B) try to get financial support from the government for their children’s training C) have to get medical advice from doctors about training methods
D)feel uncertain if they should let their children train to be sports men or women 47. The phrase “to take a second place” (Para. 1) means ________. A) to happen again
B) to become less important
C) to repeat the activities some other day
D) all things considered, they are of poor quality
48. _________ can become the best players after many years of training.. A) Most people B) Some people C) Very few people D) No people
Passage Three
Questions 49 to 53 are based on the following passage
Package(包装) is an important form of advertising. A package can sometimes motivate someone to buy a product. For example, a small child might ask for a breakfast food comes in a box with a picture of TV character. The child is more interested in the picture than in the breakfast food. Pictures for children to color or to cut out, games printed on the package, or small gifts inside a box also motivate many children to buy products, or to ask their parents to buy for them.
Some packages suggest that a buyer will get something for nothing. Food products sold in reusable containers are example of this. Although a similar product in a plain container might cost less, people often prefer to buy the product in a reusable glass or dish, because they believe the container is free. However the cost of the container is added to the cost of the product.
The size of the package also motivates the buyer. Maybe the package has “Economy Size” or “Family Size” printed on it. This suggests that the large size has the most products for the least money. But that is not always true. To find it out, a buyer has to know how the product is sold or the price of the basic unit.
The information on the package should provide some answers. But the important thing for any buyer to remember is that a package is often an advertisement. The words and pictures do not tell the whole story. Only the product inside can do that
49. Package is an important form of advertising because a package _______. A) is usually very useful
B) can sometimes motivate someone to buy a product C) is usually very beautiful
D) can tell a buyer everything about the product inside
50. “A buyer will get something for nothing” (Para. 2) most probably means that_______. A) a buyer will get what he pays for B) a buyer will not get what he wants
C) a buyer will get something free of charge D) a buyer will gain more than he loses
51. People are likely to buy the product sold in a glass or dish because_______. A) they have no other choice
B) they think they can get the container for free C) the container is too attractive
D) they know the cost of the container is included in the cost of the product 52. Which of the following statement is NOT mentioned in the passage? A) A buyer is also attracted by the size of the container.
B) Children are often made to buy a product by its package with attractive pictures C) People prefer to buy the product in a reusable container.
D) On seeing a well-designed container, a buy does not care about what is inside it 53. The writer suggests that a buyer should remember __________. A) that a package is often an advertisement B) to get the product in a large-size package C) to get the product sold in a glass or dish D) to get the product without any package
