Teaching procedures:
Step 1 Lead-in
Everyone wants to be healthy and attractive. Everyone wants to feel and look good. In the last several classes, we have read about a Canadian actress who had to go to hospital because she took some weight-loss pills. We know that taking exercises is good for our bodies. And now many people are taking up many different kinds of sports. And now there are many kinds of matches held in the world now and then. [Explanation]
由于在“Welcome to the unit” 和“Reading”已讨论过这一话题,简要概述这两部分的内容,借用之前所讨论的话题的结论,通过交流信息,使学生进一步熟悉与本单元话题相关的内容,为学习有关词汇做好铺垫,导入正题。(PPT4 交待本节课的教学任务,ppt.5导入正题。)
Step 2 Brainstorming
Look at the following pictures. What sports are the pictures about?
How many other kinds of sports do you know? The students may give some different answers.
Look at the sports on the screen to learn some sports (Part B) [Explanation]
通过多媒体呈现课本中Part B的词汇—温故知新、设计输入、激活记忆,借助于已学过的词汇建立起新旧知识之间的联系。此种方式既能激发学生的求知欲和好奇心,又能营造宽松、活跃的课堂气氛。教师边呈现图片边进入认知环节,如果是学生熟知的运动项目,学生会脱口而出,对于生词如softball, squash, aerobics, fencing, triathlon会集中注意力学习。充分调动学生的学习热情和兴趣。(PPT6—9四张有关各种运动的图片,是为学习Part B而用,教师可先出示图片,让学生说出该运动项目的名称,再出示正确答案,教师领读单词。)
Step 3 Vocabulary learning
I. Next, look at part A. Zhou Ling is writing her diary. She is thinking of clubs she could join. Now read the passage quickly and underline the names of sports mentioned in the passage.

运用一套图片组合,设计一个小小的竞猜游戏,巩固上一环节所学的词汇。通过设计Zhou Ling正在考虑要加入学校的运动俱乐部的情景,根据日记的话题设计了学校的几个俱乐部,让学生快速阅读找出文中所提到的俱乐部的名称。笔者充分利用情景,层层铺垫,让学生明白所学词汇,Free
talk about yourself 这一环节是为了及时检测学生的词汇学习情况,以便调整教学,这一环节把Part A 和Part B的词汇有机地融为一体。(PPT10—12充分利用情景,让学生快速阅读,查找文中所涉及到的俱乐部名称,当学生答案汇报完毕,教师领读各个俱乐部的名称。)
Step 4 Vocabulary extension
Discuss the following questions. Ask the students to sort out type of sports in different group.
Ask the students to review the relevant words and expressions. Let’s have a competition. First we divide our class into four groups. You must tell us the name of the sports one by one as quickly as you can.
I. How many types of sports can usually be divided into? Track and field:running hurdle race race walking relay race high jump long jump shot discus javelin ….. Ball games:soccer football/rugby volleyball table-tennis hockey ice hockey badminton baseball basketball tennis softball squash golf bowling snooker ….. gymnastics: Men: Rings Double bars High bar Side horse Jumping over Floor exercises Women: High-and-low bars Beam Jumping over Floor exercises Water sports: swimming diving water ballet sailing/sail boarding surfing (PPT13—21用于词汇的拓展,按照运动的类型进行分类,让学生完成一个接龙的游戏,一个team为一个小组,看哪个小组既快又正确地说出运动项目,并请本小组的最后(似乎缺字?)说出这组图片属于哪种类型的运动项目。)
II. Sports are quite popular all over the world. Different people have different interests and tastes. Some sports are done indoors, while others are done outdoors. (Part D) Which sports are usually done in doors, and outdoors? Indoor game Outdoor game badminton, basketball, volleyball, aerobics, squash, shooting, swimming, weightlifting, boxing, fencing, gymnastics, wrestling, skating, table tennis ,martial arts….. football, beach volleyball, running, tennis, skiing, triathlon, archery, baseball, softball… III. Ask students to read and complete Zhou Ling’s e-mail to Amy about sports she could do to make her strong again. (Part C)
What kinds of sports does Amy can do to make her strong again? Single game Double game Group game aerobics, shooting, weightlifting,…. badminton, boxing, tennis, basketball, volleyball, football, baseball, softball…. [Explanation] 通过小组竞赛的活动,进入词汇拓展环节,增加信息含量,通过罗列相关词汇,让学生根据常识对运动项目进行分类,按运动类型可分为:田径、体操、球类、水上运动项目等,按场地可分为:室内和室外运动。根据Part C的情景设计,各运动项目比赛的特点还可分为:单人,双人和小组。这一环节的学习,是为了把多个体育项目按一定的分类,进行重新组合,以便加深记忆,不知不觉中完成了Part C 和Part D 的教学任务。由于话题贴近学生的生活,学生可以进行有效的发散性的联想。(PPT22—25.根据情景对运动项目进行室内和室外的划分,Part D只列举了几项,教师可让学生尽可能多地列举,这一环节只是为了换一种方式复习词汇,Part C语言已进入运用的步骤了。)
Step 5 Discussion
I. Let’s share:Among all the sports, which one do you like best and why?(4 in group) II. Let’s do proper sports. Suppose one of your friends doesn’t like sports and usually kills his or her time by reading or watching TV. Do you think you can persuade him or her to give up this bad habit? What kinds of advice or suggestions will you give to him or her? I want to get strong and have some fun with my friends!
I want to have some fun and exercise with only one of my friends! I want to build up my strength by myself! We just want to lose weight! III. Let’s discuss:What can we get from SPORTS? List as many reasons as possible

这一环节旨在鼓励学生大胆表达自己的思想和观点,通过小组活动,使学生把课堂所学知识与现实生活密切联系起来。此环节引导学生学以致用。小组内的交流互动锻炼了学生的合作与交往能力。通过Let’s do proper sports这一情景设置,再次对教材内容的挖掘生成。词汇教学的最终目的是使学生正确而恰当地运用。知——词汇知识、学习策略以及词汇所蕴含的文化知识的输入;情——师生间的情感互动、学生的情感融入与兴趣的激发,以及情感体验的过程;意——人文精神和人生意义的体悟与提升。Let’s discuss 中的话题升华正是词汇教学中“意”的体现。促进学生在学习过程中的积极体验,从而达成多维的教学目标。
(PPT26—35让学生进行讨论的环节了,由于上一环节Zhou Ling已经给Amy一些健身的建议了,所以笔者在此基础上增设了几个情景,让学生灵活运用语言的能力得到提升。)
