Unit 5 Section Ⅱ

A

In the second half of each year, many powerful storms are born in the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean seas.Of these, only about half a dozen generate the strong, circling winds of 75 miles per hour or more that give them hurricane status, and several usually make their way to the coast. There they cause millions of dollars of damage, and bring death to large numbers of people.

The great storms that hit the coast start as innocent circling disturbances (气旋) hundreds— even thousands—of miles out to sea.As they travel aimlessly over water warmed by the summer sun, they are carried westward by the trade winds. When conditions are just right, warm, moist (潮湿的) air flows in at the bottom of such a disturbance, moves upward through it and comes out at the top.In the process, the moisture in this warm air produces rain, and with it the heat is switched to energy in the form of strong winds. As the heat increases, the young hurricane begins to turn around in a counter-clockwise motion

The average life of a hurricane is only about nine days, but it contains almost more power than we can imagine. The energy in the heat released (释放) by a hurricane’s rainfall in a single day would satisfy the entire electrical needs of the United States for more than six months.

Water, rather than wind, is the main source of death and destroying in a hurricane.A typical hurricane brings 6-to-12-inch downpours resulting in sudden floods.Worst of all is the powerful movement of the sea—the mountains of water moving towards the low-pressure hurricane center. The water level rises as much as 15 feet above normal as it moves towards shore.

1.An ordinary tropical storm is called a hurricane when __B__ . A.it occurs in the Caribbean seas B.its winds reach 75 miles per hour C.it makes its way to the coastline D.its winds begin to circle on the sea

2.The counter-clockwise movement of the hurricane is caused by __C__ . A.the low-pressure area in the center of the storm

B.the force of waves of water C.the increasing heat D.the trade winds

根据第二段“As the heat increases, the young hurricane begins to turn around in a counter-clockwise motion.”

3.What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?__A__ A.The hurricane is extraordinarily powerful. B.The hurricane is used to generate electricity. C.The hurricane can otherwise offer an unusual sight. D.The hurricane can give people an unforgettable experience.

4.What is the worst thing about a hurricane?__A__ A.The rough water. C.The heat it gives out.

B.The violent winds. D.The length of its life.

根据第四段“Water, rather than wind,is the main source of death and destroying in a hurricane.”

Is beauty something always positive? Almost everyone thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and have more respectable jobs.Personal advisors give them better advice for finding jobs.Even judges are softer on attractive defendants. But in the executive(主管的) circle, beauty can become a disadvantage.

While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder, it is harmful to a woman.Handsome male executives were considered having more honesty than plainer men;effort and ability were thought to lead to their success.Attractive female executives were considered to have less honesty than unattractive ones;their success was connected not with ability but with factors such as luck.

All unattractive women executives were thought to have more honesty and to be more capable than the attractive female executives. Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally manly position appears to lack the manly qualities required.

This is true even in politics, “When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men and women differently, ” says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates(候选人).She asked 125 college students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of women, in order of attractiveness. The students were told the photographs were of candidates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again, in the order they would vote for them.

The results showed that attractive males completely defeated unattractive men, but the women who had ranked most attractive unchangeably received the fewest votes.

5.In traditionally female jobs, attractiveness__C__ . A.makes women look more honest and capable B.strengthens the manly qualities required C.often enables women to succeed quickly D.is of no importance to women

根据第三段中的“An attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs”可推断出,在传统的女性工作中,漂亮可以使女性能够很快成功。选C。

6.Bowman’s experiment shows that when it comes to politics, attractiveness__D__ . A.turns out to be a disadvantage to men B.has as little effect on men as on women C.affects men and women alike

D.is more of a disadvantage than an advantage to women

根据最后一段中的“the women who had ranked most attractive unchangeably received the fewest votes.”

7.According to the passage, people’s views on beauty are often__B__ . A.practical C.old fashioned

B.one-sided D.supportive

8.The passage is mainly about__B__ . A.the advantages of being attractive B.the disadvantages of being attractive

C.equal rights for women D.the importance of appearance
