三、Reading Comprehension (30 points,2 points for each)从下列每篇短文的问题后所给的四个选项中选出一个最佳答案填入标题前地括号内。 Passage One

Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage.

The concept of personal choice in relation to health behaviors is an important one. An estimated 90 percent of all illnesses may be preventable if individuals make sound personal health choices based upon current medical knowledge. We all enjoy our freedom of choice and do not like to see it restricted when it is within the legal and moral boundaries of society. The structure of American society allows us to make almost all our own personal decisions that may concern our health. If we so desire, we can smoke, drink excessively, refuse to wear seat belts, eat whatever foods we want, and live a completely sedentary life-style without any exercise. The freedom to make such personal decisions is a fundamental aspect of our society, although the wisdom of these decisions can be questions. Personal choices relative to health often cause a difficulty. As one example, a teenager may know the facts relative to smoking cigarettes and health but may be pressured by friends into believing it is the socially accepted thing to do.

A multitude of factors, both inherited and environmental, influence the development of health-related behaviors, and it is beyond the scope of this text to discuss all these factors as they may affect any given individual. However, the decision to adopt a particular health-related behavior is usually one of personal choice. There are healthy choices and there are unhealthy choices. In discussing the morals of personal choice, Fries and Crapo draw a comparison. They suggest that to knowingly give oneself over to a behavior that has a statistical probability of shortening life is similar to attempting suicide. Thus, for those individuals who are interested in preserving both the quality and quantity of life, personal health choices should reflect those behaviors that are associated with a statistical probability of increased vitality and longevity.

62. The concept of personal choice concerning health is important because ________. A) personal health choices help cure most illnesses

B) it helps raise the level of our medical knowledge C) it is essential to personal freedom in American society D) wrong decisions could lead to poor health A) to “live an inactive life” B) to “live a decent life”

C) to “live a life with complete freedom” D) to “live a life of vice”

A) current medical knowledge is still insufficient B) there are many factors influencing our decisions

C) few people are willing to trade the quality of life for the quantity of life D) people are usually influenced by the behavior of their friends

63. To “live a completely sedentary life-style” (Para 1) in the passage means _______.

64. Sound personal health choice is often difficult to make because _________.

65. To knowingly allow oneself to pursue unhealthy habits is compared by Fries and Crapo to ______.

A) improving the quality of one’ life B) limiting one’s personal health choice C) deliberately ending one’s life D) breaking the rules of social behavior

66. According to Fires and Crapo sound health choices should be based on _______.

A) personal decisions B) social rules C) statistical evidence D) friends’ opinions

Passage Two

Normally a student must attend a certain number of courses in order to graduate, and each course which he attends gives him a credit which he may count towards a degree. In many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty-six courses each lasting for one semester. A typical course consists of three classes per week for fifteen weeks; while attending a university a student will probably attend four or five courses during each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semesters each year. It is possible to spread the period of work for the degree over a longer period. It is also possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course, though this is not in fact done as a regular practice.

For every course that he follows a student is given a grade, which is recorded, and the record is available for the student to show to prospective employers. All this imposes a constant pressure and strain of work, but in spite of this some students still find time for great activity in student affairs. Elections to positions in student organizations arouse much enthusiasm. The effective work of maintaining discipline is usually performed by students who advise the academic authorities. Any student who is thought to have broken the rules, for example, by cheating has to appear before a student court. With the enormous numbers of students, the operation of the system does involve a certain amount of activity. A student who has held one of these positions of authority is much respected and it will be of benefit to him later in his career.

57. Normally a student would at least attend _____ classes each week. A) 36 B) 20 C) 12 D) 15

58. According to the first paragraph an American student is allowed _______. A) to live in a different university

B) to take a particular course in a different university C) to live at home and drive to classes

D) to get two degrees from two different universities

59. American university students are usually under pressure of work because

_______.

A) their academic performance will affect their future careers B) they are heavily involved in student affairs C) they have to observe university discipline D) they want to run for positions of authority

60. Some students are enthusiastic for positions in student organizations probably because ______.

A) they hate the constant pressure strain of their study B) they will then be able to stay longer in the university C) such positions help them get better jobs D) such positions are usually well paid

61. The student organizations seem to be effective in ______. A) dealing with the academic affairs of the university B) ensuring that the students observe university regulations C) evaluating students’ performance by bringing them before a court D) keeping up the students’ enthusiasm for social activities Passage Three

It would be interesting to discover how many young people go to university without any clear idea of what they are going to do afterwards. If one considers the enormous variety of courses offered, it is not hard to see how difficult it is for a student to select the course most suited to his interests and abilities. If a student goes to university to acquire a broader perspective of life, to enlarge his ideas and to learn to think for himself, he will undoubtedly benefit. Schools often have too restricting an atmosphere, with its timetables and disciplines, to allow him much time for independent assessment of the work he is asked to do. Most students would, I believe, profit by a year or so’s exploration of different academic studies, especially those “all-rounder” with no particular interest.

There is, of course, another side to the question of how to makes the best use of one’s time at university. This is the case of the student who excels in a particular branch of learning. He is immediately accepted by the University of his choice, and spends his three or four years becoming a specialist, emerging with a first-class Honor Degree and very little knowledge of what the rest of the world is all about. It therefore becomes more and more important that, if students are not to waste their opportunities, there will have to be much more detailed information about courses and more advice.
