When David Belle was a young man, he wasn’t particularly interested in sports. What bothered the Frenchman was the regulated and overly competitive way most sports are played. Disillusioned, he quit the sports clubs in search of something else. David had always known his father Raymond had been renowned for acts of incredible athleticism and daring as a young man working for the Paris Fire Brigade, a renowned military unit. As he grew older, David became intrigued by newspaper clippings and tales of his father’s exploits. He decided to pick Belle, Sr.’s brain. Raymond’s approach to physical fitness has been born out of necessity. Born in Vietnam to a French father and a Vietnamese mother, Raymond Belle had been orphaned at the age of seven and taken to a children’s home run by the army. Having to depend on himself he became obsessed with developing his strength and agility and would sneak out of the orphanage at night and practice on the obstacle course. He also developed his own courses, which included jumping from branch to branch in trees like a nimble, referring to his training as “parcours.” His aim was to be physically prepared for any obstacle that might be in his path. Raymond cited the pioneering physical educator and theorist Georges Hébert as an influence. Hébert had promoted a “natural method” of fitness training consisting of ten fundamental skills, such as running, jumping, climbing and crawling. 31.
