Earl Forlales, 23, a graduate in material science engineering, took inspiration from the bamboo hut his grandparents lived in outside Manilla and created a house made of bamboo that can be put together in four hours to solve the chronic(长期的) shortage of affordable accommodation in the Philippines. Forlales has won a £50,000 top prize to develop cities for the future and was awarded the prize by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (Rics).

His house, known as Cubo, could be produced in a week, constructed in four hours and costs £60 per square metre. Its use of bamboo—which releases 35% more oxygen into the environment than trees—was praised by the judges. The ability of the houses to be constructed in any bamboo-producing area was one of the key attractions.

“The world’s cities are growing all the time and there is a real need to make sure they are safe, clean and comfortable places to live.” John Hughes, the competition head judge and Rics president, said. “As we look at our competitors, who are our next generation of leaders, I believe that real progress will be made in tackling the world’s biggest issues.”

Forlales has already identified a suitable area of land to start building his Cubo houses. He plans to begin work next year with experts from the Rics in an attempt to help relieve the huge pressures on housing in Manila, where a third of the 12 million population live in poor districts. He said, “I would like to thank Rics for the opportunity, and look forward to working with them to put this money to good use in Manila, and then hopefully elsewhere around the world.”

24. What contributes most to Forlales’ winning the prize?

A. The material of his house. C. The design of his house.

B. The shape of his house. D. The expense of his house.

25. Which word can replace the underlined word “tackling” in Para 3? A. Handling.

C. Tracking.

D. Covering.

26. What will Forlales do after winning the prize? A. Help people reduce pressures.

C. Advertise his bamboo houses. D. Put his creation into practice.

27. Which of the following can be a suitable title? A. A Competition in House Building B. A Man Devoted to City Development C. The Bamboo House Winning Top Prize D. The Solution to Solving Housing Shortage

Few things are more difficult than delivering bad news. Let’s say you’ve got to tell an employee that he or she is being laid off. Or announce to team members that, because of slow sales, your company won’t be able to pay bonuses this year. Or tell people that, because business is so good, they’ll all have to work on an upcoming holiday weekend.

Because you’re a caring person, you’d like to make the bad news easier to take. So you sidle into the subject,

talking about other topics first. You choose indirect language. And you try to do whatever you can to soften the blow.

That’s why you may be surprised to learn that the worst way to deliver bad news is to sugarcoat it. According to

new research, people on the receiving end of bad news would much rather you rip off the bandage than beat around the bush.

In a study conducted by Nicole Amare, participants received a range of situations involving bad news. For each

situation, they were given a choice of two approaches, then asked to select their preferred method. In nearly every case, what participants wanted most was frankness, preferring that the bearer of bad news gives it to them straight.

That means next time you need to deliver bad news to one employee or the whole team, you should communicate simply, clearly and directly. Before you begin, list your key message—the 15 to 20 words that sum up what you need to convey. When it’s time to share the news, say this message first.

Try to avoid jargon(行话) when delivering the news. This is not the time to disguise the facts in a long and twisty story. Use simple, straightforward language. Meanwhile, it is advisable to show that you care. Of course you’re stressed about the fact that you have to share bad news, but you can still express sympathy.

You can’t change bad news into good, but you can deliver your message in the best way possible.

28. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 1? A. Present some typical bad news.

B. Analyze the features of bad news. D. Introduce the topic of delivering bad news.

C. Describe how bad news is delivered.

29. What is the author’s attitude to the indirect way of delivering bad news? A. Objective.

B. Passive.

C. Supportive.

D. Cautious.

30. Why is the study by Nicole Amare mentioned in Para. 4?
