Step 1 Language points
1、The Persians wanted very much to have it as theirs. 句中的as是介词，意思是“担任，作为”。 例如：She works as a secretary.
2、In September of 490 BC, a fierce battle between the Persians and the Greeks happened at a place called Marathon, north of Athens. BC“公元前”，是before Christ”的缩写。
north of… “……以北，……的北边”，与“to the north of ……”含义和用法想同，表示“与……有距离的北边”。
例如：The small town is 26 miles (to the) north of the city.
注意：to the north of /east /west /south of … 一般表示位于某地围之外。 3、With great joy, the Greeks sent Pheidippides, a soldier who was good at running, back to Athens to tell their people the news of victory. 句中的with great joy意思是“欣喜若狂”。该结构是介词短语在句中作伴随状语。With （表原因，理由）“因……而……”。这种语义的with多半与表示情绪的词连用。
例如：red with anger 愤怒得涨红了脸； green with envy 嫉妒得脸色发青。 Jump with excitement 兴奋的跳起来； almost mad with joy 欣喜若狂。 句中who was good at running是定语从句，修饰soldier。

6、The distance of 42.195 km is such a long way to run that not all the runners can finish the race.
句中such…that…构成结果状语从句，意为“如此这般……以至于…..”。 Not all（each, every, both…）= all ( each, every, both )… not …表示部分否定，意为“并不是所有的……，并非都……”。
例如：Not all the boys in our class are tall. = All the boys in our class are not tall.
