It was August, a good season for the family's hotel-restaurant at Western Norway. Olav was expecting 500 guests to eat there before boarding a ferry. He jumped into a big car and turned onto the main road with the 11.4 kilometer Gudvanga tunnel 300 meters ahead. When it was closed for repairs, the road to his hotel was blocked and the stream of tourists stopped. But they survived, and now business started to take off again.
When almost through the tunnel, Olav spotted an unusual light some 50 meters ahead. Then he saw a tour bus on fire and dozens of tourists were running towards him, getting away from the flames. They’re going the wrong way, Olav thought, knowing the tunnel exit was just 500 meters ahead round a bend ahead of him. Then he realized the bus was now burning so fiercely that they couldn’t get round it.
