I’m speeding through a questionnaire until I hit this question:”What strongly influenced you as a young child?” Is it too strange to say that it was the place mats（餐垫）at my childhood breakfast table?
The place mats included colorful drawings of many European cities, which dad was happy to talk about. But the one of Paris always drew extra attention. “That’s the most wonderful city in the world,” he would tell me. “The language they speak there is just like music. But in each of these cities, they all speak a different but beautiful language.” I would say almost every morning, “I want to go to these cities. Can I?” And he always gave me the same answer: “Absolutely. You can and you will.”
Dad was a great lover of Broadway musicals. He often drew me to the table with songs from them. I loved them and couldn’t wait to be a grown-up so I could go to the theater. “Will I be able to see all these shows someday?” I would ask. And dad would answer: “Of course. You can and you will.” Talking about Broadway shows often brought us to another of my dad’s great love: New York. He would list the wonderful things to do in New York. When I asked my usual question, he changed the subject for his answer. “Of course we can and we will.” And we did.
It’s been decades since I could enjoy a meal with my dad. But the impressions of our breakfast together can be seen all over my résumé（简历）. I spent two years of graduate school in Europe. I lived in New York for 20 years. And to this day there’s never a month in which I don’t go to the theater.
