Hisdesignscontainedprocessors,controlunits,amemoryandaninput/outputsystem.Thesearethefouressentialpartsofamodernmathematicalcomputer! Alas!

His“seconddifferenceengine”couldn’tuseelectricitysincethishadn’tyetbecomeausablesourceofpower,soBabbagehadtomakedowithmechanicalsystems.Forthisreason,themachinewasbig,complicatedandexpensive.ThoughBabbageproducedcompleteplansforthemachine,hecouldn’tbuildit.Itwastooadvancedforitsage!

Itwasnotuntilalmost160yearslaterthatBabbage’s“seconddifferenceengine”wasfinallymanufactured.ThefirstworkingversionofthismachinewasbuiltbytheScienceMuseuminLondon,fortheBabbagebicentenaryin1991.AsecondmachinewasthenbuiltforanAmericanhigh-techmillionaire,whoputitintheComputerHistoryMuseum,inCalifornia.
