C. Reading Comprehension

(A)

Directions: Read the excerpt from Escaping the Labyrinth in Unit 7 of the textbook and answer the questions that follow.

Mazes are almost as old as human civilization. They appear in ancient tales, like the Greek myth of the Minotaur and have continued to capture the imagination over the centuries. They have also featured in several notable psychological experiments which are now seen as important contributions to our understanding of how spatial memory and awareness works. Homeward Bound Considered the grandfather of maze-related experiments, the first research to test the maze-learning abilities of animals probably took place at Clark University in the laboratory of prominent psychologist Edmund Sanford. Their experiments were conducted by William Small and were inspired by a conversation he had with his fellow graduate student Linus Kline. Both men were interested in the “home-finding” ability of rats. When Kline mentioned having seen a network of runways used by rats living under the porch of an old cabin on his father’s farm, Sanford was reminded of the famous maze at Hampton Court, a royal palace in England. Small and Kline created a replica of the maze and set about examining how rats moved around it to find their nest. Although the research seems a little outdated and unscientific by today’s standards, it did yield some important findings. For example, although two of Small’s rats were blind, they managed to learn the routes of the maze just as easily as their full-sighted fellows. This established that vision was not required for spatial perception. 31. According to the passage, how long have mazes existed? a. as long as rats have existed b. as long as people have existed c. since experiments took place at Clark University d. No information is given.

32. Which best explains why the writer uses the heading Homeward Bound? a. The Greeks imagined they would go home. b. Rats tend to find their way home. c. Small and Kline wanted to go home. d.
