Does a Tea Break Make You More Efficient?
China has been drinking tea since the time of Shennong, 5,000 years ago. Britain’s relationship with tea is much shorter, but tea enjoys the pride as the U’s national drink. According to the U Tea Council, British people drink an average of three cups a day or a national total of 165 million cups every day.
With figures like these, it is no surprise that time spent taking tea affects the working day in Britain. A recent survey found that 24 minutes a day are lost to making, buying and drinking tea and coffee. That is, £400 a year is lost in working hours per employee, or 190 days over a lifetime. So, should employers be worried about this lost working time, or does the tea break make up in other ways?
One argument is that caffeine improves mental state a drink of tea or coffee can make you active and focus on work.
Professor Rogers of the University of Bristol disagrees. After years of studying caffeine he sees nothing can prove that. “Workers would perform equally well if not drinking it at all,” he says. “But if they’re often drinking it and then go without, they’ll feel tired and won’t work well.”
Psychologist Cooper instead emphasizes the role tea breaks play in office life, and in building social relationships. “We need to make people more active and see other people. The tea break is one way of doing this,” says Cooper.
And Professor Rogers also points out the comfort effect of a hot drink “We warm our hands on them on a cold day; they’re comforting and play a big role in our everyday life. Whatever the caffeine’s doing, I’d say these 24 minutes aren’t wasted.” 56. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Tea Breaks cannot make people more active at work. B. British people drink more tea than people in other countries. C. Tea break plays an important role in people’s life in Britain. D. A lot of time has been wasted drinking tea in the working day. 57. We learn from a recent survey that in Britain _______. A. £400 is lost in working hours for each person B. tea breaks take up 24 minutes in a working day
C. people spends 190 days drinking tea and coffee each year D. people drink 165 million cups in working hours every day 58. What’s Psychologist Coopers’ attitude towards tea break? A. Doubtful.

detectors (探测器) to 10 years in prison, saying the man hadn’t cared about potentially deadly consequences.
It is believed that James McCormick got about $77. 8 million from the sales of his detectors — which McCormick, 57,was convicted (判罪) of cheats last month and sentenced Thursday at the Old Bailey were based on a kind of golf ball finder — to countries including Iraq, Belgium and Saudi Arabia.
court in London.
“Your cheating conduct in selling a great amount of useless equipment simply for huge profit promoted a false sense of security and in all probability materially contributed to causing death and injury to
innocent people,’’ Judge Richard Hone told McCormick. “You have neither regret, nor shame, nor any sense of guilt.”
The detectors, sold for up to $ 42,000 each, were said to be able to find such dangerous objects as bombs under water and from the air. But in fact they “lacked any grounding in science” and were of no use. McCormick had told the court that he sold his detectors to the police in enya, the prison service in Hong ong, the army in Egypt and the border control in Thailand.
“I never had any bad results from customers,” he said. A. He sold bombs. C. He made detectors. A. increased the cost of safeguarding
B. He caused death of people. D. He cheated in business.
B. lowered people’s guard against danger
59. Why was McCormick sentenced to prison?
60. According to the judge, what McCormick had done ________ .
C. changed people’s idea of social security D. caused innocent people to commit crimes A. They have not been sold to Africa.
B. They have caused many serious problems.

C. They can find dangerous objects in water. D. They don't function on the basis of science. A. sold the equipment at a low price B. was well-known in most countries C. did not think he had committed the crime

In ancient Egypt, the pharaoh(法老)treated the poor message runner like a prince when he arrived at
62. It can be inferred from the passage that McCormick _________ .
the palace, if he brought good news. However, if the exhausted runner had the misfortune to bring the pharaoh unhappy news, his head was cut off.
Shades of that spirit spread over today's conversations. Once a friend and I packed up some peanut butter and sandwiches for an outing. As we walked light heartedly out the door, picnic basket in hand, a smiling neighbor looked up at the sky and said, “Oh boy, bad day for a picnic. The weatherman says it’s going to rain.” I wanted to strike him on the face with the peanut butter and sandwiches. Not for his stupid weather report, for his smile.
Several months ago I was racing to catch a bus. As I breathlessly put my handful of cash across the Grey hound counter, the sales agent said with a broad smile,“Oh that bus left five minutes ago. ” Dreams of head-cutting!
It’s not the news that makes someone angry. It’s the unsympathetic attitude with which it’s delivered. Everyone must give bad news from time to time, and winning professionals do it with the proper attitude. A doctor advising a patient that she needs an operation does it in a caring way. A boss informing an employee he didn’t get the job takes on a sympathetic tone. Big winners know, when delivering any bad news, they should share the feeling of the receiver.
Unfortunately, many people are not aware of this. When you are tired from a long flight, has a hotel clerk cheerfully said that your room isn’t ready yet? When you had your heart set on the toast beef, has your waiter told you that he just served the last piece? It makes you as traveler or diner want to land your fist right on their unsympathetic faces.
Had my neighbor told me of the upcoming rainstorm with sympathy, I would have appreciated his
warming. Had the Greyhound salesclerk sympathetically informed me that my bus had already left, I probably would have said, “Oh, that’s all right I'll catch the next one.” Big winners, when they bear bad news, deliver bombs with the emotion the hombarded(被轰炸的)person is sure to have. 63. In Paragraph l, the writer tells the story of the pharaoh to _______
65. From “Dreams of head-cutting!\
A . was mad at the sales agent B. was reminded of the cruel pharaoh
C. wished that the sales agent would have had dreams D. dreamed of cutting the sales agent’s head that night.
A. Delivering bad news properly is important in communication. B. Helping others sincerely is the key to business success. C. Receiving bad news requires great courage. D. Learning ancient traditions can be useful.
D
Sometimes you may have a strong desire to do something strange or terrible. However, chances are that you don’t act on your impulse (冲动), but let it pass instead. You know that to take the action is wrong in some way and that other people will not accept your behavior.
Perhaps the most interesting thing about the phenomenon of taboo (禁忌) behavior is how it can change over the years, how certain behavior and attitudes once considered taboo can become perfectly acceptable and natural at another point in time. Topics such as death, for example, were once considered so upsetting that it was a taboo to even talk about them. Now with the publication of important books such as On Death and Dying and Learning to Say Goodbye, people have become more aware of the importance of expressing feelings about death and, as a result, are more willing to talk about this taboo subject.
One of the newest taboos is the topic of fat. Unlike many other taboos, fat is a topic that people talk about constantly. It’s not taboo to talk about fat; it’s taboo to be fat. The “in” look is thin, not fat. In the work world, most companies prefer youthful-looking, slim manager to sell their image as well as their products to the public. The thin look is associated with youth, vigor, and success. The fat person, on the other hand, is thought of as lazy and lacking in energy, self-discipline and self-respect. After all, how can people permit themselves to become fat? In an image-conscious society, thin is ‘‘in”, fat is “out”.
It’s not surprising that millions of people have become obsessed (着迷) with staying slim and “in shape”. The pursuit of a youthful physical appearance is not, however, the only reason for people’s obsession with diet and exercise. Recent research has shown the importance of diet and exercise for personal health. As in most technologically developed nations, the life-style of people has changed since last
A. make a comparison C. describe a scene
B introduce a topic D. offer an argument
D. not helpful
64. In the writer’s opinion, his neighbor was_______.
A. friendly B. warm-hearted C not considerate
66. What is the main idea of the text?
century. Modern machines do all the physical labor. Cars and buses transport us quickly from point to point. As a result of inactivity and disuse, people’s bodies can easily become weak. In an effort to avoid such a fate , millions of people are spending more of their time exercising. Parks are filled with joggers and bicyclists, and many companies are providing special exercise equipment for their employees to use during the work day.
67. What does the word “taboo’’ refer to in the passage? A. A crime committed on impulse.
B. An unfavorable impression left on other people. C. A strong desire to do something strange or terrible. D. Behavior considered unacceptable to the society.
68. What does the underlined phrase “in” look probably mean? A. The fashionable look.
C. The usual look.
B. The hidden look.
D. The inside look.
69. According to the passage, the common belief is that . A. fat people are full of energy
B. thin people are more successful D. thin people are less image-conscious
B. their love for sports
C. fat people prefer to have fat bosses A. their need to kill time
C. their concern for health

Our class planned to organize an activity on March 5th , the day in memory of Lei Feng. The day before, we had had a class meeting to discuss what we would do. After a heated discussion, we had decided to go to a senior citizens home to do something for the elderly. On March 5th, we set out early in the morning. As soon as we got to the senior citizens home, we first did a thorough cleaning. Some swept and mopped the floor. Some cleaned the windows and the others did some washing. An hour later, the rooms in the senior citizens home looked clean and tidy and took on a new look. And then we were divided into two groups. One group gave wonderful performances that the elderly enjoyed a lot, the other group taught those who were interested in English some daily English expressions. All the elderly had a good time with us. When lunch time came we had to wave good-bye to them..
We’ve really learned a lot from what we did. We also realize that we can make ourselves useful to those who need help and care.

Jim, look at this funny picture. I think it tries to tell us that learning by doing is a good way to gain knowledge and solve problems. As we can see, a man is sitting at a table on which there is a plate full of ongzi, a kind of Chinese traditional food for the Dragon Boat Festival, and a cup. Somehow it seems that he is at a loss to eat them. Believe it or not, he just finds a book on How to unwrap ongzi and carefully reads it instead of trying himself. As students, we are learning by reading almost every day. It is true that books can tell us a lot and teach us how to deal with some problems. However, there are also some other ways of gaining knowledge, including the way of learning by doing. As the saying goes, “Jump in and get your feet wet ”. In my opinion, by trying and practicing, we can effectively acquire knowledge and remember it easily. Even sometimes we make mistakes, we can learn from them. So isn’t it better to try unwrapping these ongzi than to read a book telling you how to do it?

请阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项的标号涂黑。

I will be the first to say that I am not materialistic. My friends regard me as a goody-goody; my parents say I am conservative and modest when it comes to clothes. None of my skirts or shorts end above my knees.
So why, why did I feel so invited? My family and I were in Target, and there it was, waiting. A skirt, specifically designed not to cover anything. It looked like something that one of those modern schoolgirls would wear.
I checked my purse. The skirt cost $10. I had the money. I could buy it. I imagined walking into school and my friends’ jaws (下巴) dropping. Guys would ask me out, and I would be happy. I could buy it, no, — I should buy it.
I showed my mother. She was surprised but said it was my decision. My sister looked on enviously. I went into the dressing room to try it on. So sure was I that this skirt would change me, somehow make me not what I am but what I wished to be. I slid my jeans off and put it on. I looked in the mirror. There I was — a terrible girl in a Superman T-shirt and sneakers. My glasses fogged up as I started to cry.
The skirt did not change me. Though it fit well and might make me look good in the eyes of today’s world, it was not me. I am not a girl who wears cool clothes to fit in.
I took the thing off and slid back into the comfort of modesty. My mom knocked on the door. “Emily, are you okay?”
I wiped away my tears. “I’m fine.” I looked in the mirror again and saw a slim girl with funny glasses. I saw myself.
36. In the author’s eyes the skirt that interested her was ______. A. not modern C. too expensive
A. shocked
B. very short
D. poorly designed C. confused
D. happier
37. The author thought if she went to school in this skirt her schoolmates would be ______.
B. hurt
38. The underlined sentence in the 3rd paragraph indicates the author ______.
A. hesitated about buying the skirt B. made up her mind to buy the skirt C. was able to afford to buy the skirt D. worried about others’ opinion on the skirt A. she found that she looked ugly in the skirt B. she was aware the skirt didn’t fit her well
C. she realized it’s a wrong decision to make a change D. she was disappointed the skirt failed to change her

Travel can be a lifesaver. But in today’s economy (经济) with airlines adding new fees almost daily and ticket prices sharply on the rise, many have written off travel as too expensive. However, with a few saving tricks and a little research, there are still lots of great deals to be had on airline tickets and more.
Early Bird Gets the Deal.
Travel experts say that there are certain times of day when more deals are available. Airfares can change three times a day as airlines adjust their prices to fill up flights. Early morning is when the fares tend to be lowest.
What Wouldn’t a Business Traveler do?
Flying when business travelers don’t can save you big money. Most business travelers fly on Mondays and Fridays, so Tuesday and Wednesday are the best days. Airlines will usually lower their prices on these days to aggressively try and fill empty seats.
Fly to popular places at unpopular times. The slowest time of the year for travel is in the Fall between Labor Day and Thanksgiving. Again, to try and fill more empty seats, the airlines will lower prices and offer better deals to get people to fly during this time of the year.
Package Deals
Many times the best deals on airfare can be found as part of a package rate. Most travel sites have package rates available. Often, the entire package (hotel, airfare, rental car) is cheaper than just the plane ticket on another site. Even if you don’t need the rental car, with the money you’ve saved on the flight, you can afford to take a taxi. These deals are especially good on last minute bookings.
39. The author cried because ______.
With a little inside knowledge and some good timing, you can get yourself a steal on a ticket to the vacation you thought was out of reach. 40. Which would be the best title for the text?
A. Tips on Vocation Travelling B. Advice for Business Travelers C. The Effect of Economy on Airlines D. Tricks of Finding the Cheapest Flights
41. Many people have to cancel their travel plan because they _____.
A. have no saving tricks C. seldom do research A. Fly to popular places. B. Don’t Miss the Holydays. C. Better Avoid the Crowds. D. Lose No Chance for Travelling. 43. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Saving tricks can make the seemingly impossible vacation possible. B. Inside knowledge and good timing help you to steal tickets from airlines. C. Vacation will be out of reach without inside knowledge and good timing. D. Who thinks the vacation is out of reach never grasps the tricks of saving.
C
Not many people can say that they have lived in two totally different environments, and technically neither can I. I have lived in the same house in the same Connecticut town my whole life, but a lot of my childhood and teenage years have been spent visiting my family in New York City.
Wethersfield is a typical New England town, a small close community (社区) where almost everyone knows your name. My friends all go to the same high school and my parents are friendly with my friends’ parents. Most of my friends don’t realize what life is like outside this little town. Maybe every so often a few take a day trip to Manhattan or Boston, but none really knows what it’s like to live in an urban environment.
My parents are both from New York City and since they have siblings and friends who still live there, we visit a lot. From an early age I have been exposed to urban life. Jeff, one of my cousins, lives with his mother in a one-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn. He has never had his own room and has always been very much on his own. I don’t think any of my friends could understand how someone could live like that.
When I go to the city I see things I would never see in my hometown. I see poverty and people struggling to make a living. I observe a whole different pace; there, you’re just one guy living with millions of others who will never know your name.
I feel blessed to have experienced the lifestyles of two completely different places. I am grateful for the opportunities I have had. I feel that living in Wethersfield has given me a solid base in forming my character and the ability to deal in a close-knit society. On the other hand, my time spent in New York has exposed me to diverse cultural experiences. I feel that I would be comfortable in any environment and could make the best of any situation.
44. According to the author, most of his friends in the town _____.
A. have never experienced city life
B. consider economic reasons D. can’t have great deals
42. Which of the following can be filled in the blank in the text?

45. The underlined word “siblings” in paragraph 3 means _____. 46. The author’s life in New York has brought him _____.
A. his present character C. the comfort of city life
B. the social ability D. diverse cultural experiences
47. What could be the best title for the passage?
A. A Small Town and a Big City B. A Man of Two Different Worlds C. Experience Various Environments D. Make the Best of Diverse Cultures

U.S. Bottled Water Sales Are Booming Again Despite Opposition
Despite organized anti-bottled-water campaigns across the country and a noisy debate about bottled water’s environmental impact, Americans are buying more bottled water than ever. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why do so many people seem to think they should have any input on what other American’s choose to buy or do?
If they want to buy bottled water, let them. If they want to eat fast food, let them. If they want to smoke pot, let them.
— Barackalypse
People just get tired of paying for others’ bad behavior. If many people eat excessive fast food, you pay higher insurance premiums. If many people frequently buy bottled water, your trash bills go up and landfills fill up quickly.
It’s about personal responsibility, which really should be a cornerstone of libertarianism.
— Bdbr
So? This is the price you pay to live in a free society. You want to control the life of another just so you can save a few bucks? What would you say when someone do the same to you?
— Norman619
Defend selfish pricks all you like; I’m just glad there are still people who still believe personal responsibility is a good and decent thing. We make your life cheaper and less bothersome.
— Yoyo
What a waste of money! It’s fine when you’re on the road and you need a cold drink, but people who buy cases of bottled water for home are completely crazy.
— Agmlauncher
I wish we all can find a way to improve things and benefit from this. The environment needs a lot of help but businesses will always work on what people would need and demand. Is this part of the balance? Hope we can find better ways.
— Skipweis
48. What can we know about bottled water in America?
A. Americans are consuming more bottled water than tap. B. US bottled water sales have increased for the first time. C. Activists in several regions have been fighting against it. D. Some people worry about its bad effect on the environment. 49. Who would agree with Barackalypse on this matter? A. Bdbr.
B. Norman619.
C. Yoyo.
D. Agmlauncher.
50. According to the text, Agmlauncher is _____ bottled water. A. partly supportive of C. strongly in favor of
B. extremely against D. not concerned about
51. Which of the following statements goes with Skipweis’ opinion? A. The environment is emphasized too much. B. It’s impossible for people to find a better way. C. Business is not totally responsible for the problem. D. At present we can’t benefit from bottled water at all.

The structure and workings of the university are ever changing. The university of the past is not like the university of the present and the university of the present will not be like the university of the future. This “adaptation” to the times is what can make some universities great or make some universities among the worst in the nation.
In the past the university was very set in their ways. They did things the way they wanted them done. They paid no attention to the rest of the society and the way the ones paying the bills wanted them done. In the past the professors would lecture endlessly to the students, which often left the students bored and with no idea what was really said to them in the lecture. This is no way to try and teach students; students need interaction with the professors that are paid to teach them. As Paulo Freire believed there needs to be communication between the students and the professors and the class should not be totally memorization. This is the way that things were done in the past.
In the present many universities have either changed or are changing the way that they run their universities. The universities now are taking on many of the modern educational beliefs in order to make changes in the teaching methods. Universities are breaking down many of the divides between majors that they offer. By breaking these barriers the universities are becoming less specialized and more diverse. This goes along with the ideas of Berry who believes that the schools are over-specialized and that the universities are now just machines that are merely meant to produce workers. In the past few years the colleges have been lowering the standards of admission, which in turn lowers the standards of all the schools below the college level. The universities are now on the right track by increasing the standards of admission into their colleges.
52. In the author’s view, what can decide a university’s quality? A. What its structure is like. C. What times it belongs to. A. They were run in a fixed way. B. They ignored the needs of society. C. They had lower standards of admission. D. Professors lacked interaction with students.
B. How its workings are run. D. Whether it’ll adjust itself.
53. Which of the following is NOT a feature of universities in the past?
54. What is the author’s main attitude towards universities in the present? A. Positive.

In my perspective, children need more freedom to grow up, even if they will meet with failures or frustrations. So, parents, give more space to your kids if you really love them and want to protect them. 写作二 Dear Peter,

When does SAT take place every year? What does SAT generally involve? Could you please give me some suggestions on how I should prepare for it, especially reading and writing, which I have the greatest difficulty in? As for references, do you happen to know some of help? If so, recommend them to me, will you? Books, websites and anything you can think of will do.
I would greatly appreciate it if you could kindly extend your help. I am looking forward to your reply.

My parents had always prepared for hurricanes. It is what 36 people do in Florida because “you never know”. One year, Channel 4 reported that Hurricane Dora was 41 for the northern part of Florida. Soon the storm got 42 and the wind blew. Then, the tall pine trees started to sway. And, by “sway”, I meant
“ 43 over or crash down on anything in their way”. We were lucky, as the 44 went other directions and didn’t take our power out.
However, when my mother started cooking, the power was out. 45 I figured it was time to crack open that white cabinet. But, Dad thought it was time to 46 up the charcoal grill outside where it was raining and windy. To this day, I never 47 a man’s love for his grill.
Our power came back for a while. So, my mother began cooking everything she could and 48 it away, to the neighbors, to friends without power, to anyone who was 49 up. I was hoping that the fried chicken was going to find its way to our 50 . But, it didn’t. And, just as the last of the food was sent out and she began to work on our dinner, yes, we lost our 51 . It was time for 20 minutes’ eggs on the grill.
Oh, the white metal cabinet? No. We never 52 it. We weren’t “that bad off” as I understand it. And, for years I 53 how bad off we would have to be to eat out of that cabinet. Perhaps it was just the 54 of it, the thought that it was there watching our backs 55 we wanted a can of beans or some potted meat. I don’t know if that was what was in there. Parents all struggle to get children to understand that money doesn’t grow on trees, wanting them to be responsible, work hard and learn to save a few bucks. But these lessons are among the most difficult to teach.
Enter idania, an internationally praised and truly unique children’s theme park, that makes life a little easier for parents.
idania is not a traditional theme park in almost any sense of the word — there are no roller coasters or merry-go-rounds in sight. There are, however, plenty of attractions and activities that will keep children busy, active, engaged and excited all day.
What makes it so much fun is that it’s a kid-sized city — complete with restaurants, banks, grocery stores and hospitals — where the kids get to be adults, doing the things most of us do on any normal day.
They start by picking one of nearly 100 “careers” and learning about it. Then, they put on their uniform and are ready to work and earn idania dollars (“idzos”).
Most activities are universal but some are localized to reflect the distinct flavors and personality of the country and region where the park is located and to keep it real for the kids.
ids get paid for every job they do, which helps them explore the mysteries of managing money. idzos in hand, they can spend it or save it. If they run short of money, they’ll have to find a way to earn some.
Each idania city is planned in amazing detail, even including real world brands that help sponsor the city and keep it running. I was a little wary of all the popular corporate logos, but the brands weren’t pushed at all. They are there to reinforce the “real city” feeling by mixing it with things kids recognize.
idania employs senior citizens who give the park a homey feel and help put children at ease. Management also employs the disabled, whether blind, deaf or wheelchair-bound. Besides making for a more realistic city, this teaches children about those with different abilities and gives them an opportunity to spend time with people they might otherwise have stared at or treated less than kindly.
Socialization is an important part of idania, just as it is throughout childhood. The idania experience empowers kids, giving them the confidence to be their best selves, and the inspiration to be great global citizens. And it’s part of what makes idania such an amazing place for families and children. 59. idania is unique in that ________. A. it has no entertainment facilities B. it includes lots of localized activities
C. it offers kids chances to learn through working D. it employs many seniors and disabled people
60. The underlined word “wary” in Paragraph 8 is similar in meaning to ________. A. astonished B. cautious C. delighted D. conscious 61. Children’s theme park idania is set up to ________. A. prepare them to be good citizens in the future B. provide them with a place to have a good time C. make them aware of their parents’ hardship
D. assist them in building a good relationship with parents 62. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage? A. Children do part-time jobs at a theme park B. A theme park pushes kids to be grown-ups C. idania theme park makes adults’ life easier
D. ids get to ‘be’ adults at idania theme park
C
For decades, public health officials have puzzled over a surprising fact about HIV Only about 10-20 percent of infants who are breastfed by infected mothers catch the virus. Tests show, though, that HIV is indeed present in breast milk, so these children are exposed to the virus multiple times daily for the first several months of their lives.
Now, a group of scientists and doctors from Duke University has figured out why these babies don’t get infected. Human breast milk naturally contains a protein called Tenascin C that neutralizes HIV and, in most cases, prevents it from being passed from mother to child. Eventually, they say, the protein could potentially be valuable as an HIV-fighting tool for both infants and adults that are either HIV-positive or at risk of contracting the infection.
The research, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, was inspired by previous work by other researchers showing that, both in tissue cultures (组织培养) and live mice, breast milk from HIV-negativemothers was naturally endowed with HIV-fighting properties. Scientists suggested that a few different proteins in the milk could potentially be responsible, but no one knew which one.
As part of the study, the researchers divided breast milk into smaller fractions (部分) made up of specific proteins via a number of filters (过滤) — separating the proteins by size, electrical charge and other characteristics—and tested which of these fractions, when added to a tissue culture, prevented the cells from being infected by HIV. Eventually, they found that one particular protein was present in all the HIV-resistant fractions but in none of the others Tenascin C.
Tenascin C works by blocking a key protein on HIV’s envelope that normally ties up to a receptor on a T cell’s membrane called CCR5. In doing so, Tenascin C prevents HIV from mixing with the T cell and injecting its RNA inside.
Still, the researchers say that other natural elements in milk might play a role in fighting HIV as well. “It’s clearly not the whole story, because we do have samples that have low amounts of this protein but still have HIV-neutralizing activity,” the study’s lead author Permar says. “So it may be acting in concert with other antiviral and antimicrobial factors in the milk.”
Whatever those other factors are, though, the finding vindicates (证明……的正确) recent changes to UN guidelines that recommend even HIV-positive mothers in resource-poor countries should breastfeed, if they’re taking anti-retroviral drugs to combat their own infection.
The next steps, Permar says, are determining which area of Tenascin C is active and whether it can effectively prevent transmission in a live animal. If it works, it could potentially be incorporated (合并) into an HIV drug with broader applications. It’s even possible that it could someday be adapted to reduce the risk of HIV transmission in adults as well as infants. 63. What is the main idea of Paragraph 1?
A. The breast milk from an infected mother doesn’t contain HIV at all.
B. It’s less likely for infants feeding on infected mothers’ breast milk to catch HIV. C. The possibilities of infants catching HIV have nothing to do with infected mothers. D. Children breastfed by infected mothers won’t catch HIV though exposed to it frequently. 64. Why did the researchers divide breast milk into smaller fractions? A. To find out Tenascin C. B. To make up specific proteins.
C. To add them to a tissue culture. D. To test what prevents cells being infected. 65. Which of the following about Tenascin C is true?
A. It has become an effective tool in fighting HIV. B. It was first found by Permar and her research group. C. It can prevent transmission in a live animal effectively. D. It can sometimes prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
66. What can we know about Permar and her research group according to the passage? A. They have found a cure for HIV. B. They have helped change UN guidelines. C. They will do more researches on Tenascin C. D. Their finding is based on their previous work.

He leant down to the pickpocket. The heaving and gasping had stopped, but he was still making a show of his breathlessness.
“That’s better,” Mallon said. “Can you stand up? Try to stand up. Here,” he said, and gripped the pickpocket’s arm and forced him upright until he saw his face for the first time. As the pickpocket labored for breath, he gazed up at Mallon with his dark eyes. “How could you?” they asked.
Mallon might have said, “Because you tried to steal from me.” But he was still conscious of the flush of joy he’d felt when his blow struck home — when he knew he’d hurt the man. Where that joy came from he couldn’t say, but he knew that its roots were deeper than some clumsy failed theft.
Fat drops of rain began to patter on the awning (雨篷).
“How are you?” Mallon said. “Can you walk?” The pickpocket turned away and leant against the store window with both hands, and his head sank lower as his shoulders rose and fell. A gray-haired woman inside the store rapped on the glass and made a shooing motion. When the pickpocket ignored her, she rapped harder and kept rapping.
“I have to go,” Mallon said. “I’m sorry.” He looked up at the sky. “I’m sorry,” he said again, and stepped into the rain and walked quickly up the street.
One of the Bangladeshi umbrella sellers was working the corner, and Mallon had just paid seven euros when he heard a woman shouting. He didn’t want to look back but did. It was the woman from the shop, pushing and batting the pickpocket away from the window while he bent down and covered his head like a boxer trying to get through the last seconds of a round. Mallon slipped his wallet back into his jacket pocket and took the umbrella that the Bangladeshi had opened for him.
The pickpocket was out on the sidewalk now, in the rain. The woman stood just under the awning with her arms crossed over her chest.
“Excuse me, madam,” Mallon said, coming up to them. “This man isn’t well. He needs to rest a moment.”
“I know these people,” she said. “Our Romans don’t want them here.”
The rain fell in sheets, ran down the pickpocket’s shiny scalp and face, down his leather jacket. “Here,” Mallon said, and offered him the umbrella, but he only looked at Mallon with his hurt dark eyes and then lowered his head again. Mallon bumped him in the shoulder with the handle of the umbrella. “Go on — take it!” he said. And finally, with a beaten, unwilling look, the pickpocket did.
And that was when he saw a taxi round the corner with a light glowing on its roof. Mallon ran out waving his arm and the cab turned sharply to the pavement, sending a lot of water over his shoes. He opened the door but couldn’t help looking back. The pickpocket had lowered the umbrella to the ground upside down and was leaning on the shaft, head low, neck bared to the sky. “Wait,” Mallon said to the driver. He went back and grabbed the pickpocket’s sleeve and pulled him to the cab. “Get in,” Mallon said, and took the umbrella and pushed him into the back seat. He leaned inside. “O.., where do you live?”
“No Gypsies!” the driver said. He was twisted around, glaring at the pickpocket. “Gypsy? Look, he’s not well. I’ll pay,” Mallon added. The driver shook his head. “No Gypsies. Get him out,”
Mallon looked at the driver’s nameplate Michele adare. “It’s the law,” he said, “If you don’t take us, Signor adare, I’ll report you and you’ll lose your license. Believe me — I am quite serious.”
The driver fastened those pale eyes on Mallon and turned and put his hands on the steering wheel. He raised his eyes to the rearview mirror and he and Mallon exchanged stares.
“O.., Mr. American,” he said. “You pay.”
67. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 indicate? A. Mallon shouldn’t have saved the pickpocket. B. The pickpocket didn’t thank Mallon for his offer. C. The pickpocket blamed Mallon for his failure to steal. D. Mallon must have beaten the pickpocket before helping him.
68. Where should the sentence “He hesitated, then turned back.” be placed? A. Between paragraphs 5 and 6. B. Between paragraphs 6 and 7. C. Between paragraphs 7 and 8. D. Between paragraphs 8 and 9.
69. From the attitudes of the woman and the driver towards the pickpocket, we can conclude that ________. A. the Gypsies had a bad reputation in Rome
B. the pickpocket frequently stole around the woman’s store C. everyone was protected by the law in Rome except the Gypsies D. the pickpocket couldn’t purchase anything in the woman’s store 70. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage? A. The taxi didn’t take the pickpocket to his house in the end. B. The pickpocket succeeded in stealing something from Mallon.
C. The pickpocket was a little suspicious of Mallon’s intention to help him. D. The umbrella seller gave an umbrella to Mallon free of charge.
You’ve just graduated from business school and you feel like the world is your oyster, only to find that job offers aren’t knocking down your door as expected, making MBAs wonder why they’re not getting hired. This can be disheartening, but as an MBA, you know that perception(洞察力)is more important than reality. The key to getting hired is an employer’s perception of you. Many MBA graduates are guilty of unconsciously displaying signs that they are not the best fit for the job. Once you discover what these common mistakes are, you can put your MBA skills to use and strategize how to turn things in your favor and land the job you’ve been looking for.
Employers feel more comfortable hiring MBAs with experience because there is less need for training. Many MBAs mistakenly apply for jobs they are obviously not qualified for or which require more experience than they have, leaving them scratching their heads at why they’re not getting interviews. Recruiters want MBAs who can prove their ability to increase revenues, decrease costs, and help their
business succeed in some way. Show that you can help the company by providing concrete examples of relevant experience.
MBAs often have great resumes showing all the right qualifications, but then blow the interview with inappropriate behavior, such as a lack of professional appearance, poor hygiene, or even a bad attitude. It’s necessary to be on your best behavior, dress appropriately, and not seem cocky, bored, or disinterested in the company. A little enthusiasm won’t hurt you, especially when it comes to a potential new job. Every business wants to put their most enthusiastic MBAs forward with important clients and customers, so be sure to show your passion for your work.
Another mistake you may be making unknowingly is how you portray yourself on social media. As an MBA, you know how important networking is, and these days, most of it is done online. Don’t assume that employers aren’t interested in your online profiles. Many employers now use social networking sites and online searches to check up on potential hires. Inappropriate photos and information, such as annoying material or implications of drinking and drug use are huge red flags to employers. Even discriminatory comments related to race, gender, or religion will leave employers with a bad impression. Make sure to remove any photos, content, or links that can work against you in an employer’s eyes.
Don’t forget that practice makes perfect when it comes to finding a great MBA job. Earning your MBA was a huge accomplishment, but there’s always room for improvement. Ask your classmates, peers, family, and even past co-workers or managers for feedback. Show multiple, trusted resources the job posting you’re interested in, your cover letter and resume. Take constructive criticism on how it can be better. Do mock interviews to help relieve any tension and gain a better idea of how you’d like to present yourself. With a few minor changes to your resume and the way you interact with others, you’ll be hearing “you’re hired” in no time!

With the swift development of the Internet, we can see online shopping has become a new trend in our daily life.
There are several factors behind this phenomenon. First of all, it is very convenient for people to purchase what they want or like with the Internet easily accessible via computers or cellphones. Second, people shopping online have more choices of goods than they do in real shops and are able to save time as well. Third, the relatively low prices on the Internet also account for higher sales online.
In my opinion, as the pace of life quickens, it is natural for people to choose online shopping to save time and energy. But when we enjoy the convenience it brings us, we should be careful because sometimes the quality of goods cannot be guaranteed. Furthermore, we’d better stay rational and just buy what we really need, otherwise it would cause a waste of money and resources. (150 words) 听力文稿 Text 1

You were in a serious situation. You need a friend. Your best friend is the one person you really needed and yet they weren’t there for you to support or help you. They were too busy with their own life no matter how hard you tried to explain the situation. You might be angry. How do you forgive your friend?
Don’t react with hurtful words. The worst thing you could do in any situation is to criticize anyone. It only creates more hurt and anger and doesn’t make you feel any better. If you have to get angry at your friend then write it all down. A popular method of getting rid of anger towards another is to write them a letter telling them exactly how you feel. Then burn it. It can be a freeing thing to do. In addition, take a breath and take a moment. Find a quiet place if you are able to and breathe deeply for a few moments while you try to clear you mind. This is a gift to yourself. Listen to soothing music if it helps to clear your mind. This time can help you to stay calm and make some wise decisions on how to handle the situation with your friend and begin to forgive them.

My favorite English teacher could draw humor out of the driest material. It wasn’t forced on us either. He took Samuel Johnson’s dictionary, Addison’s essays, and many other literary wonders from the eighteenth century and made them hilarious, even at eight o’clock in the morning. The thing that amazed me most was that the first time I read these works on my own, some of them seemed dead, but the second time, after his explanation, I couldn’t believe that I hadn’t seen the humor. The stories and poems and plays were suddenly filled with allusions(典故) and irony and hilarious moments. I learned more from him than from any other teacher.
My least favorite English teacher also made people laugh. Some students found him to be wonderfully funny. Many others did not. He assigned journals over a six-week period, to be written every day. At the end of the six weeks I had a notebook full of bits and pieces about my ideas, short stories, reactions to what we had read, and so on. Our teacher announced that we would be grading each other’s journals. Mine was passed to Joe, that class clown, who always behaved in a funny or silly way. He saw it fit to make a joke of and said, “This writing isn’t fit to line the bottom of a birdcage.” Our teacher laughed at that funny remark. It hurt me so much that the anger from it has driven my writing and teaching ever since.
So what makes the difference? Humor is one of the most powerful tools teachers or writers have. It can build up students and classes and make them excited about literature and writing, or it can tear them apart. It is true that humor is either productive or counter-productive and self-defeating. 56. The passage mainly discusses ________.
A. teaching B. literature C. humor A. funny
D. knowledge
57. The underlined word “hilarious” in Paragraph 1 probably means ________.
B. tiring C. inspiring D. brilliant
B. hurt his student’s feelings

New rules will let millions of Americans know where more of their food comes from. The law is known as COOL -- Country of Origin Labeling(标签).
American congress first passed the law in 2002. Stores have had to label seafood by country of origin since 2005. But industry pressure delayed other requirements until last week.
Products that must now be labeled include fresh fruits and vegetables, muscle meats and some kinds of nuts. But the rules are complex, and many foods are not included. For example, organ meats are free to be labeled. So are processed foods, including cooked or smoked foods.
The same food may sometimes have to be labeled and other times not. Fresh or frozen peas, for example, have to be labeled but not canned peas. Foods that are mixed with other foods are also excluded. Mixed nuts, for example, do not need to be labeled. The same is true of a salad mix that contains different things like lettuce and carrots. Or a fruit cup that combines different fruits. Also, the law doesn’t include restaurants and other food service organizations. Department of Agriculture officials say the law is really meant for larger grocery stores.
The United States has imported more and more food in recent years to save money and expand choices. Country-of-origin labeling has become more common lately but has still been limited in many stores.
Food safety is one reason why some shoppers pay close attention to where foods came from. For example, when a large number of people recently got sick from salmonella(沙门菌病), officials blamed peppers from Mexico. Yet the last big food scare involved spinach grown in California. But labeling is also a 58. The English teacher the writer disliked most ________.
A. was not able to make students laugh
C. didn’t let his students do the grading D. had no sense of humor
way for people to know they are getting what they want. Some want to buy local foods or foods from a particular country.
The country-of-origin labeling law gives stores 30 days to correct any violations(违反) that are found. Stores and suppliers that are found to be deliberately violating the law could be fined 1,000 dollars per violation. Federal inspectors are not to take action to enforce the law for six months to give time for an education campaign.
Some food safety activists say they are generally pleased with the law. They call it a good step that will give people more useful information.
59. Why has more and more food been imported to the United States in recent years? A. It is economical and provides people with more choices. B. Foreign food is of higher quality than native food. C. Americans need more and more food recently. D. The United States is short of food supply.
60. Consumers are more concerned about where foods come from because________. A. they are curious about the origin of the food. B. most of them are particular about the tastes C. they are concerned about food safety D. most of them are food safety activists
61. The new rules of the country-of-origin labeling law will come into effect________. A. right now B. in a month C. in three months D. in half a year 62. Which of the following can be inferred from the text? A. Store owners are most likely to be the supporters of the law.
B. The government of America will possibly forbid importing peppers from Mexico. C. Federal inspectors couldn’t take measures to enforce the law.
D. Most Americans prefer imported vegetables to the vegetables grown in local places.

It is often said that man has become the enemy of our planet. This is no exaggeration(夸张), for reports show that man’s greed has done much to destroy the earth. Man, in his greedy desire for financial growth, has polluted the air, land and water, and has robbed our valuable natural resources. Man’s industrial plants pour out poisonous waste that pollutes the sea and puts life in the sea under the threat of dying out; at the same time, they release alarming amounts of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and other pollutants. Small wonder that the air now is much warmer and more impure than ever before.
Of course, this is not just because of man’s greed—it is man’s pressing need as well. For instance, in developing countries, huge financial foreign debts have forced governments to approve the cutting of forests for agriculture or ranching. As a result, forests are cut down just to meet man’s immediate needs.
Perhaps unknowingly, man has changed the make-up of the earth's atmosphere. Scientific studies have shown that CFCs used in refrigerators and industrial cleaners are fast destroying the ozone layer—a protective layer in the atmosphere that protects us against the harmful effects of the sun’s ultraviolet (紫外线)rays. In fact, documented reports have shown a terrible fact that there are “holes” in the ozone layer over the Antarctic. And they appear to be expanding.
Faced with these environmental problems, world leaders have shown deep concern. The UN Environmental Programme (UNEP) has arranged international agreements like the Vienna convention of 1985 and the Montreal Protocol of 1989 to preserve the ozone layer by controlling the production, use and
trade of destructive chemicals.
There may be some doubt as to how effectual these agreements may be, given that some countries still maintain an “I-don’t-care” attitude. Their attitude is probably due to their failure to grasp the importance of the problem. Then, there is no doubt that environmental education on an international scale(规模)is greatly needed, so that all countries, great and small—the “haves” and the “have nots”—may realize their responsibilities for our planet.
In the meantime, the UNEP seems to have taken steps in the right direction, and it is hoped that in the not so distant future, all nations of the world will join hands in saving mother earth. 63. Which of the following is a reason for the cutting and burning of forests?
A. To build houses for more population. C. To export trees to other countries. A. man’s research activities C. the ultraviolent
B. To have land for agriculture. D. To build industrial plants.
64. The holes in the ozone layer are largely due to________.
B. the greenhouse effect D. harmful chemicals
65. Why don’t some countries care about the problem of the environment?
A. They don’t want to put their lives in danger. B. They just don’t know how to solve the problem. C. They haven’t realized the seriousness of the problem. D. They don’t want to break their international commitment. 66. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of the environment?
A. Hopeful.
B. Unconcerned
C. Doubtful
D
Of all the websites, one that has attracted attention recently is myspace. Most of this attention has come from the media and tells every reason why the website should be shut down. The danger of internet predators(窃掠者) is indeed a tough reality, but shutting down the site is not the answer. If myspace were shut down, another site would quickly take its place. Therefore, the right way is to teach teens how to use the site safely and educate them about who may be predators and how to avoid them.
The key to staying safe on the Internet is to make sure that your profile(个人资料) is secure. The simplest way is to change the privacy setting on your profile to “private”, which protects your information so that only the people on your friend list can view it. Although this is effective, it is not perfect. Predators can find ways to view your profile if they really want to, whether through hacking(非法侵入) in or figuring out their way onto your friend list. Thus, you should never post too much personal information. Some people actually post their home and school addresses, date of birth, and other personal information, often letting predators know exactly where they will be and when. The safest information is your first name and province. Anything more is basically inviting a predator into your life.
Another big problem is photos. I suggest completely skipping photos and never posting a photo of a friend online without asking permission.
Most importantly, never, under any circumstances, agree to a real-life meeting with anyone you meet online. No matter how well you think you know this person, there are no guarantees that they have told the truth. But you could feel free to chat with people you meet on the site, but just remember that not everyone is who they say they are. Hopefully, the next time you edit your profile, you’ll be more informed about the dangers of Internet predators and take the steps to defend yourself.
Lastly, do not send money to anyone you meet online. A common scam among Internet criminals is to
D. Objective
request to pay for “expensive Internet charges” or “unreasonable Internet cafe fees”. While it is indeed true that many countries in Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa and South America do not yet have Internet service readily available in all cities and towns, a sincere friend from one of these countries will be more than happy to pay their own Internet charges. Never, under any circumstances, should you send money to a stranger from another country(or within your own country for that matter) who claims monetary assistance is required to continue their contact with you. 67. ids can avoid web predators successfully by________. A. attracting more public attention
B. shutting down the “myspace”
C. learning different ways to try other sites 68. We can learn from the text that________.
A. everybody you meet online isn’t honest and reliable B. it is not acceptable to post a photo of a friend online C. it is not safe to chat with grown-ups on the website D. only you and your friends can view your personal profile
69. What does the underlined word “scam” in the last paragraph mean? A. A thing that you can have two choices. B. An unpleasant task that tests one’s ability. C. A possibility of something happening. D. An illegal plan for making money. 70. What could be the best title of this passage? A. Personal Safety.
B. Web Safety for Teens. D. Predators’ Tricks.

A hobby is an investment of time. It also can be an investment of money and commitment. Many people choose to develop more than one type of hobby. 71 When it comes to choosing the hobby, consider the following factors.
Hobbies are usually an activity of some sort that brings out a certain skill that you have. When you have a talent like painting or woodworking, it can be easy to determine which hobby suits your skill. 72 Skill can be developed and challenged as you go along. It is not a necessary requirement. A hobby is fitting because you love it, not because you’re a professional at it.
Some people particularly enjoy taking part in hobbies that they can do in a group with others. It can be a lot more fun to become a member of a hobby group than to sit alone in your basement. 73 It’s important to share interests and network with other hobby enthusiasts that do what you do.
Hobbies are generally an activity that you undertake because of the joy it brings you. Of course many people have discovered the joy that also comes with a hobby that earns you a living. __74 Just make sure you make the choice that fits your lifestyle and personal preference.
75 But most of the skilled hobbies like art, building or writing have a series of lessons or tutorials that you can take to further your skills. In some cases it’s a really good idea to take lessons, especially if you are clueless as to where or how to begin. Step by step books for most hobbies can often be found in bookstores as well.
A. However, hobbies don’t have to be skill related. C. Web Hackers in the past.
D. recognizing and getting away from them
B. Most hobbies can easily be done within your own home, at your leisure. C. Look one up or start your own.
D. Read hobby books to learn more about your chosen hobby! E. Make a list of things that you enjoy or don’t know about.
F. It can be a necessary part of selecting the hobby that is right for you.
G. Whether it’s full time, part time or not at all, you must decide whether your hobby applies to you.

书面表达:One possible version Dear Jack,
How have you been recently? I know that you have gotten so addicted to video games that you often stay up late and ignore your studies. As your best friend, I believe that I have the responsibility to give you some advice.
As you might have discovered, video games can have quite a few negative impacts on your life. First, lacking sleep, you may often nod off in class. Therefore, you may not be able to concentrate on what the teacher is saying. You may have found yourself falling behind and having a hard time catching up in your studies. In addition, it seems that you have become a mouse potato and forgotten the benefits of playing sports.
I really miss the happy times with you on the basketball court, and you do need some exercise. Please do not indulge yourself in video games anymore. How about meeting in the park this Sunday? I look forward to your reply!
Sincerely Yours,
Jill

Text 10 There was once a man who spent 90% of his time in the glasshouse. Flowers was his name, and flowers were his main joy in life. He grew flowers of every color under the sun. He grew these flowers in order to enter them for competition. His greatest hope in life was to grow a rose of an entirely new color that would win him the silver cup for the Rose of the Year. Mr. Flowers’ glasshouse was close to a public path, which was always used by children walking to and from school. Boys were often attracted to throw a stone or two at his glasshouse. So Mr. Flowers did his best to be in or close by his glasshouse at the beginning and end of the school day. However, it was not convenient or possible to be on guard all the time. Mr. Flowers had tried many ways to prevent harm to his glasshouse, but nothing that he had done had been successful. Then, just as he was giving up the hope of ever winning the battle and of growing the Rose of the Year, he had a truly wonderful idea. He put up a large notice made of good, strong wood, some meters away from the glasshouse, where it could be clearly seen from the path. He had painted the words on the board DO NOT THROW SRONES AT THIS NOTICE. After this, Mr. Flowers had no further trouble. The boys were much more attracted to throw stones at the notice than at the glasshouse.
