Dad’s birthday usually falls in June, near Father’s Day. Last year, they were even on the same day. I thought this was unfair for my dad to only have one special day in June. My friends’ dads had Father’s Day parties in June or birthday parties in difference months. I thought of a way to fixing this problem. I would surprise Dad on autumn with Dad’s Day. I talk to my mom about cooking a breakfast for Dad. She showed to me how to cook eggs and make bread. I made special card for Dad. I was careful to keep my plan secretly. One day in October, I woke up early, cooked Dad’s breakfast and took it to his room with my card. She loved the surprise very much. 第二节:书面表达(满分25分)

[A]

A polar bear swimming in the Thames River in London.

11

“How did that happen?” Susan Fletcher remembers wondering when she first read a history of the royal (皇家的) zoo at the Tower of London. The animals there were often gifts from the rulers of other countries to the king of England. But how, exactly, did an Arctic animal end up there?

Fletcher knew she wanted to write about that bear, but she also knew she would have to do a lot of research. The bear lived more than 750 years ago.

“Journey of the Pale Bear” took five years to research and write. Because there were so few facts about the bear, its keeper and their travels, Fletcher imagined the keeper as a 12-year-old boy named Arthur. In the novel, Arthur and a polar bear travel from Norway to England in 1252. They brave homesickness, stormy seas and pirates.

Writing the book was also a journey for Fletcher, who started it in Portland, Oregon, but finished it about 2,000 miles away in Texas.

Fletcher learned much about polar bears by spending time with them. Thanks to a special invitation from the curator (园长) at the Oregon Zoo, Fletcher had a chance to watch two polar bears in a quiet space off limits to the public.

Her dog, Neville, helped Fletcher understand how humans and animals might communicate without words. Being with Neville gave Fletcher insight into how Arthur and the bear might relate to each other.

Fletcher did research in old documents (文献) and histories to discover what Arthur might have eaten and worn, but she relied on her own childhood for details of his travels by land.

Growing up in California and Ohio, Fletcher loved to explore the outdoors with her three younger siblings (同胞). They would spend hours in nearby fields and hills and explore the pond and river — just like Arthur and the bear in the book.

Fletcher has already started writing her next novel. Instead of a polar bear, look for cactuses, turtles and armadillos in the new tale.

1. When did Susan Fletcher get the idea of writing about a polar bear? A. When she saw a polar bear swimming in London. B. When she learnt some of the royal zoo’s history. C. After her visit to the Tower of London.

12

D. After her visit to the Oregon Zoo. 2. What can we learn about Fletcher? A. She is interested in traveling.

B. She is famous for writing about animals. C. She is writing a new book about a polar bear. D. She spent five years finishing her polar bear novel.

3. Where did Fletcher learn about the way Arthur and the bear might communicate? A. From documents in libraries. B. From living with her dog Neville. C. From her friend who works in the zoo. D. From the time she spent with bears in the zoo.

4. How did Fletcher design the details of Arthur’s story on land? A. By doing research on the history of the 13th century. B. By discussing them with her three siblings. C. By studying the life of her own children. D. By referring to her own life as a child.

It might sound like 1.5 million penguins are a hard thing to miss. However, that is indeed the case with this super-colony of Adélie penguins who have managed to conceal themselves for many years in the Danger Islands of Antarctica. The far-away, difficult to reach, land is always circled by thick ice. It was, therefore, believed to be uninhabitable (不适宜居住的) and scientists paid little attention to it.

However in 2014, when Stony Brook University scientist Heather Lynch was examining pictures of the islands, she noticed what appeared to be penguin waste. To find out what was happening, Lynch planned an expedition (探险) with a team that included researchers.

After several months of preparation, the researchers reached

the Danger Islands in December 2015. To their joy, they were greeted by hundreds of thousands of the nesting birds. Through several days of hard work, the researchers came to the conclusion that the islands are home to over 1.5 million penguins. The

discovery is particularly exciting given that on the West Antarctic Peninsula, Adélie penguin numbers are dropping rapidly. With the new additions, scientists now say there are over four million known pairs of the birds in Antarctica.

In the study, published (发表) in Scientific Reports on March 2, 2018, the scientists said one of the things that surprised them about the newly-found penguins was their nesting habits. Unlike other Adélie penguins who nest in a circle to protect themselves, the Danger Islands birds seem to have no such fear and prefer nesting separately. And thanks to the pinkish waste, the researchers know the penguins’ diet is mainly made up of shrimp (虾).

“This exciting discovery shows us just how much more there still is to learn about this amazing animal,” said Rod Downie, head of the polar programs at the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF). “But it also reminds us to protect the waters off the coast of Antarctica to safeguard Adélie penguins from both overfishing and global warming.”

5. What does the underlined word “conceal” in Paragraph 1 mean? A. Hide. B. Protect. C. Control. D. Support.

6. How was Heather Lynch’s expedition? A. Interesting. B. Unexpected. C. Fruitful. D. Disappointing.

7. How do the newly-found penguins differ from other Adélie penguins? A. In their diet. B. In their appearance. C. In their nesting habits. D. In their way of communication.

8. What is the author’s purpose in writing this text?

14

A. To report a discovery. B. To record an expedition. C. To introduce Adélie penguins. D. To call on people to protect penguins.

My dream theme park is a construction-themed adventure park. I’d like to name it Diggerland. It has rides and attractions all centered on construction equipment for adventurous people to enjoy. Those looking for a more exciting activity can even drive and operate the bright yellow machines in a safe environment. On the machines, they can dig, pick up ducks and do other fun activities. For those dreaming of being behind the wheel of a real-life piece of construction equipment, Diggerland can create a new experience and make their dreams come true.
