How to write a résumé

Awards Second Place in the News Writing Competition for Students of Journalism in Nanjing, 2001

Xuanwu Award for Excellence in Journalism, 2000

A résumé is a concise business-style report that displays your job qualifications to a prospective employer. Typically, information is grouped under the six headings as shown in Sample 2.

1. Heading

Include your name, address, phone number, and e-mail address. Don't date the résumé ; it will then become obsolete more quickly that it otherwise would.

5. Professional Interests

Cite membership in professional organizations. In addition, note any special skills such as training in lifesaving or fluency in a foreign language.

6. References

Indicate that they will be furnished on request.

2. Employment Objective

State your immediate work goal and the direction you hope your career will take.

3. Education

List relevant facts of your college education. Note any academic honors such as a scholarship.

4. Employment Experience

Highlight your full-time, part-time, volunteer, and summer work experience. Mention any promotions or raises you've received.

Professional Interests Member of the Journalists' Association of Jiangsu Province. Vice chairman of the Students' Union at Xuanwu University, Proficient in both Chinese and English

Below are some more tips:

1. Capitalize the headings to make them stand out on the page.

2. To condense information, use phrases and clauses rather than complete sentences.

3. List your most recent education and employment experience first and then work backward so the employer can quickly gauge what you've done recently.

4. Don't try to cram too much material onto a page. Ample white space is important.Unit 3

applicant interview prospective endeavor

employment (as)the saying goes do one's homework make a difference in the neighborhood of from one's/the standpoint (of)

Well begun is half done, as the saying goes. It is extremely important for a job applicant to do his homework while seeking employment. From my standpoint, whether or not one has done his homework clearly makes a difference in his chance of success.

I have a friend who is earning somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 thousand dollars a year in a large computer software company. He told me that from his own experience the decision makers who interview prospective employees like people who are well prepared. Those who make no endeavor to learn as much about his prospective employer as possible don't have much of a chance of success.Sample 1

Dear Dr. Rickles,

Dr. Sandra Endicott, professor of biology at Long Island State University, told me that you are seeking a biochemical researcher at Kerrigan Industries. I am very interested in Kerrigan Industries and would like to be considered for the position. Enclosed is my résumé.

According to DR. Endicott, you are looking for a scientist to help design and conduct studies of marine flora and fauna. This field of biochemistry has been my specialty throughout my undergraduate and graduate studies at Long Island State University. I enjoy team research as well as independent fieldwork, and I'm eager to assist you in whatever capacity best serves your interests.

In 1994 my research on sea mussel habitats in Long Island Sound earned me the Tischler Prize for Excellence in Science. It also made me appreciate the importance of the type of high-quality research that Kerrigan has performed in this area. I would welcome the opportunity to share my skills and expand my knowledge by working with you and your colleagues.

Please let me know when it would be convenient for us to meet, and I will make myself available. You can reach me at (718)553-6938. Thank you for your consideration.

Ms. Helen Thompson

Medical Records AdministratorSt. Luke's Hospital411 West Cooper StreetSaginaw, MI 48602Dear Ms. Thompson:

Ms. Leslie Goldstein, director of your nursing department, has informed me that you intend to hire an assistant administrator. I believe that my formal training in medical records administration and my hospital experience qualify me for this position. Please regard this letter as my formal application.

On May 24, 2001, I will receive a bachelor of science degree in medical records administration from Ferris State University. This program offers a thorough background in medical terminology, health science, technical skills, and personnel management, and emphasizes health administration. As an intern, I served three months in the medical records department of a large hospital, learning the day-to-day operations of such a department and the managerial skills necessary to hold a supervisory position. To help pay for my education, I have worked three summers as a server. This job has provided experience in meeting and dealing with people on a one-to-one basis. While in college, I have been social chairman of the Ferris Medical Records Association and a member of the American Medical Records Association. The enclosed résumé provides further information about my experience and background.

May I arrange an interview to discuss my qualifications in greater detail? You can reach me by writing to the above address or by calling (231) 796-7791 Monday through Friday from 2 to 5 P.M.

Sincerely,

45
