A Memorable Meeting
It all took place in Lancaster one evening long ago. I had been looking for somewhere to learn aikido, a Japanese form of self-defence. So one night I found myself entering a church hall where I had heard lessons took place. It was empty apart from a small frail-looking old man. He wore a workman's overall and I guessed he was the caretaker of the hall. We got chatting and I asked if this was where the aikido club met. \yes,\he replied, smiling. \be along later.\
And, sure enough, the members soon started to arrive. As they got changed, none, I noticed, wore the traditional black belt of the teacher. Who was it to be? Then he appeared. It was the same man I had earlier mistaken for the caretaker. Before long he was throwing around opponents twice his size with ease despite his age and slight build.
Over the years he taught me many lessons, but I shall never forget that first one -- appearances are deceptive!(171 words)

How to write a narrative (2)
In Unit One we touched upon two points which you should consider when planning a
narrative: Context and Selection of Details. Now we would like to call your attention to two more points:
Organization
Narratives usually have a beginning, a middle and an end. The setting is often given in the beginning; the middle describes the sequence of events that make up your narrative; the significance of your story is brought out in the end.Purpose
In most cases narration is used for a purpose. You do not write a narrative for its own sake. Rather, you tell a story to prove a point. Thus, you should make sure that the final impression your

narrative leaves on the reader answers your purpose. To achieve this, you should select and arrange the details of your story with great care.

When I was young I developed a keen interest in animals. So I often visited the zoo in my home town. There what attracted me most was a couple of tigers, especially the male. They were kept in a huge iron cage at first, but later was released from it and put in a place called Tiger Hill. The hill was separated from the visitors by a very wide and deep ditch. What's more, it was also surrounded by a high iron fence along the ditch. Twenty years later, I revisited the zoo and was relieved to find the Tiger Hill was still there but greatly extended. Moving around now were six tigers, old and young, instead of two!Model paper
Are animals intelligent? It's a difficult question to decide.
Take the case of my dog, Sam. Whenever he does something wrong, eats the chocolates we left on the table, for example, Sam will hide. He clearly knows he has done wrong and is likely to get shouted at for it. Usually we find him hiding under one of the beds. Unfortunately, being a rather large dog, he can never fit all of him under, and so you can see the back half of him sticking out. Now, is he stupid enough to think \can't see you, so you can't see me\Or is he smart enough to be thinking, \
That his tail is always wagging at such moments leads me to suspect the latter explanation is nearer the truth.(149 words)

Learn to use examples in essay writing
Examples are a very effective means to clarify a thought, to support statements or to help persuade. Besides, examples also add interest and vividness to an essay. Make sure that all the examples are relevant and persuasive.
Always bear in mind the examples you choose should be closely related to and fully support your points as in the story of Orky or Tibby in the texts.Choose typical examples.
Of all the examples, choose those most likely to convince your reader. After reading the story of Colo or Chantek, do you still have any doubt about the bargaining skills of animals like gorillas or orangutans?

In describing an event or writing a story, writers often present events in exactly the order in which they occurred: earlier things are mentioned before later things, the first thing first and the

last thing last. Writing in strict time sequence makes it easy for your readers to follow your story. However, you do not always have to write in strict time sequence. For example, you may choose to arouse your readers' interest by beginning with a key event from the middle of your story, or even from the end, and then presenting the events that led up to it. The point is that you must follow some clear and orderly plan whatever ordering scheme you use. Only by doing so will your readers be able to understand what is told in your story.

Using cause and effect in essay writing (1)
9
Every day we try to figure out the causes of things and analyze or predict effects. Cause-and-effect analysis is, therefore, an important analytical skill to develop. When writing a cause-and-effect paper, you should bear in mind the following points:Sound Reasoning or Logic When discussing causes and effects, make sure your analysis is logical. You must not take it for granted that event A causes event B simply because event A precedes (先于) event B. In other words, you must explain clearly what really brings about a particular result. Possible Shift in Order In cause-and-effect writing, it seems convenient to state the effect first and then analyze the causes. The reverse order, however, is to be preferred when one cause leads to a number of effects.

Unit 1
I consider it worthwhile trying to summarize our experience in learning English. Here I would like to make three relevant points.
First, wide reading should be taken as a priority in the learning process, because it is through reading that we get the most language input. Next, learning by heart as many well-written essays as possible is also very important. On the one hand, rote learning/learning by rote is indeed of little help, but on the other hand, memorization/learning by heart with a good understanding will certainly be of benefit/do good to us. With an enormous store of excellent essays in our heads, we will find it much easier to express ourselves in English. Finally, it is critical that we should put what we have learned into practice. By doing more reading, writing, listening and speaking, we will be able to accomplish the task of perfecting our English.Model paper
