Dear Dr. Li,

In searching for employment opportunities on the Internet, I learned of a job vacancy in the Public Affairs Reporting Section of your newspaper. I believe that my qualifications match the requirements you have listed for the position.

As a journalism major at Xuanwu University in Nanjing, my academic training has enabled me to develop my writing and editing skills, particularly in the reporting of public affairs. At college, English, Reporting Public Affairs, Advertising and Public Relations have been my favorite subjects. I would like to utilize my interests and training to the fullest through working on a newspaper as well-known as your own.

My résumé reflects my experience as a journalistic intern with two newspapers in Nanjing. While working there I did both research work and reporting. I greatly enjoyed work as a professional reporter and the challenge of writing to deadlines, all of which I successfully met..

I have won several awards for my journalistic work and was admitted to the Journalists' Association of Jiangsu Province last year. I was the vice chairman of the Students' Union in my university for two years. The enclosed résumé provides further information about my experience and background.

How to write job application letters

An application letter accompanies and introduces a résumé when the résumé is being mailed to a prospective employer. Here are some guidelines for composing an effective application letter: 1. An application letter should always be addressed to a specific individual.

2. In the opening paragraph of the letter, you should clarify which specific job you want and how you learned about the job vacancy.

3. The letter should go on to state, in summary fashion, why you want the job and why you qualify for it.

4. End by requesting an interview. Provide a phone number so the employer can contact you quickly. If you can be reached only at certain times, specify them.

5. Be concise. Generally speaking, an application letter shouldn't be longer than one page.

6. Avoid bragging or boasting. Call attention to your most impressive achievements relating to the job you are seeking, and let these achievements speak for themselves. Unit 4

constructive cooperation destructive ethnic from the perspective of inevitably paralyze plural religion

Professor Huntington's paper greatly inspired me. According to him, in a plural/pluralistic society, there will inevitably be different opinions. The key is to deal with them in such a way that they can play a constructive rather than destructive role.

He argues that in a plural/pluralistic society we must stress/attach importance to interpersonal

relationships, cooperation, and looking at issues from the perspective of other people. If some groups regard themselves as superior and treat other ethnic groups or religions with disrespect, the whole society may be paralyzed.

I am convinced that if we put into practice the ideas mentioned above, then there is the possibility of creating a new civilization.Model paper

Learning about Other Cultures

If you want to get along with people from other nations, then learning their language alone is not enough. You also have to master their customs. Invited home by a Western friend for dinner, for example, you may well politely refuse when offered more food by your host, even though you would really like some more. If you do, you may well go hungry, for your host is quite likely not to offer again and may remove the dish from the table. Pressing a guest to take more after the guest has refused is considered bad manners in some Western countries rather than being the duty of a considerate host.

Such differences in customs take time to discover. We often are so used to our own ways of doing things that it just does not occur to us that elsewhere people have altogether different ideas about what is proper and what is not. Yet the ability to mix at ease with people from different cultural backgrounds is becoming all the more necessary in a world that is growing ever smaller. (184 words)

Writing Strategy Ways to begin an essay

Generally speaking, the purpose of an introduction is to introduce the topic of the piece and to create interest on the part of the readers. There is no single way to begin all essays. The following are some possible approaches:

Using a quotation

For instance, at the very beginning of the essay What's American about America? (Text B, Unit 4, Book IV), the author quotes from the New York Times so as to lead to a discussion about

48

in what way North America is unique in the world.

Asking a question

In the introduction of Is There Life on Planets Circling Other Stars (Text B, Unit 4, Book III), the author poses a provocative question to stimulate readers' interest; then, he sets out to explore the issue raised by the question.

Stating the time and place of the event to be described

In the introduction for The Normandy Landings (Text B, Unit 1, Book IV), for example, the author makes clear the time (in the summer of 1944) and the place (northern France) of the event (the Normandy Landings) he is going to dwell on.

Providing relevant background information

For instance, in the introduction for The Icy Defender (Text A, Unit 1, Book IV), you can read about background information relevant to the theme of the essay -- underestimating the severity of the Russian winter caused Napoleon and Hitler to meet their waterloo in that country. Giving a surprising or interesting fact

A case in point is the introduction for The Richest Man in America, Down Home. It tells about how surprised (and disappointed) the waiter was to find the millionaire lived such a simple life.Unit 5

commit mild down and out insane candid all of a piece for one's own part deceptive

For my own part, I should certainly hesitate to hire a clerk on his face/appearance alone. Appearances are all too often deceptive. For instance, you might well commit an error in judgment if you went by appearances only with people like Edward Hyde Burton, the character created by Maugham. As far as appearance and manners were concerned, Burton seemed a man all of a piece. He was a tiny little fellow with white hair and mild blue eyes. Kind, gentle and candid, he was described by many as one of the most respectable people on earth. Nevertheless, he turned out to be cruel to a friend in need of his help. He insulted and fooled Turner who was down and out and made him commit himself to an insane venture. What was still more surprising was that he was completely indifferent to Turner's death. Without doubt, Burton was a man with a heart of stone.Model paper

Molding Character

Why are some people kind and generous, others cruel and heartless? Were they born that way or were the differences in character shaped by differences in experience? The care that is taken in educating children shows that we place a lot of faith in good upbringing in the molding of character. Yet, children are clearly born with different temperaments and this will lead them to respond differently to the same treatment. Then again, accidents or disease can bring about changes to the brain that can completely transform a person's character.

Deciding where the balance lies between nature and external causes can be difficult. Take, for example, the case of the man whose character changed from being amiable and law-abiding to being aggressive and antisocial in a matter of a few weeks. On investigation, it was found that the man was suffering from a brain tumor. When this was removed, he returned to his original kindly character. Later the tumor grew once again, and the same slide into antisocial behavior began again. In both cases the tumor was pressing on the part of the brain that controls social behavior and changing the man's character. The response from others was understanding and help. However, where a criminal is born with the same type of brain that the tumor caused, our response is not sympathy and treatment, but condemnation and punishment. Is this logical? Is it fair? Writing Strategy Ways to conclude an essay

Your conclusion is often the part of your essay that gives your reader the deepest impression.

Indeed, all's well that ends well, as Shakespeare put it.

An effective conclusion indicates that you have finished what you have to say and gives a sense of completeness or closure. In Unit 1, Book III, we gave a word of advice about how we often end a comparison and contrast paper. Here we would like to call your attention to some of the common approaches to conclude an essay. Restating the main points

For instance, in the concluding paragraph of Get the Job You Want (Text A, Unit 3, Book IV), the writer summarizes \make their own tracks in the snow. Referring back to the introduction

Some writers like to conclude their essays by briefly referring back to the introduction. Read again the introduction of The Icy Defender (Text A, Unit 1, Book IV) and its conclusion, and you will find this is what its author does for the essay.
