Week Five 健康饮食

一、阅读理解(共16小题;共32.0分)

A

I am often laughed at for my habit of traveling by foot. I often walk about 3 miles from home to work rather than take the subway. Sometimes, kind-hearted drivers will offer me a ride, thinking that my car has broken down.

But for me, walking is a good opportunity to relax myself. Besides, it helps my back recover from a day spent bent in front of a computer screen. In terms of health, I have always thought I'd have the last laugh, and now there's even more evidence on my side.

Nine years later, brain scans showed that those who had walked more had greater brain volume(容量) than those who walked less. Four years after that, the volunteers were tested again—this time for dementia(痴呆). Among the group, 116 people showed signs of memory loss or dementia. Those who had walked the most—at least 7 miles each week—were half as likely to have cognitive(认知) problems as those who walked the least.

A study has found that the simple act of walking may improve memory in old age. As we age, our brains shrink, which can lead to the loss of memory. However, experts say there's still not enough data to prove that exercise can prevent memory loss. It's also too soon to say whether exercise may prevent dementia or simply delay it in people who would eventually develop it anyway. But for those who suffer from dementia(痴呆), even a short delay could mean great losses in quality of life.

Working people often experience a high level of stress because of their tight schedules. The right type of music can help relax the mind, promote healthy blood pressure and in general help promote the right mental state for people to remain relaxed and focused-even at work. Because there is such a strong connection between mood and health, music's positive effects may even promote healthier bodies. Early peoples may even have established music and musical events for some of these same reasons.

While plenty of doctors go through years of training to understand how to use music in the best ways to benefit their patients, most of us can still benefit from instinctive self-therapy using music to help calm and focus our own minds.

In the workplace, music has a bad reputation as a distraction that affects productivity(生产率) and reduces healthy, timely communication between employees—but this is not necessarily the reality. Studies show that people who use the Internet properly to listen music heavily tend to be more, not less productive than those who use it very little. For reasons that aren't entirely different, music has also been shown to help us make smarter choices and do better at work in general.

The key is to choose music that contributes positively to a healthy work rhythm and positive, energetic state of mind without becoming annoying or drawing our focus too heavily from where we want it to be.

9. What does this passage mainly talk about?

A. The connection between music and health. B. Music's negative effects to work.
