谈到室内空间设计，这几十年来，我们从不缺少中式风格的设计，这与有没有室内设计这个行业并无关系。例如我们常常看到尤其老一辈的家庭里，他们的布置就相当有中式风格：大套的红木家具，墙面和天花板上或可见到中式图案的修饰。这一类中式风格的产生绝不是我所谓的对中国艺术的品味休养所得的结果，其产生的原因是属于一种习惯。它不是生活的习惯或视觉的习惯，而是思想上的习惯。这类情况所产生的中国风格与艺术、修养、美学无关，所以表现的结果不是粗陋与呆板，就是浮华而俗气。
归纳中国人所喜爱的表现方式，应该与民族性格有直接关系。自古以来中国人的思想深受三种哲学影响：儒家思想——主张道德、礼仪、规范。佛家思想——主张出世、禁欲的观念。道家思想——主张自然、无为的观念。这三种思想深深影响中国的宗教及社会生活，当然也直接影响艺术表现及文化。

二、什么是传统中式风格
中国风格到底是什么样子呢？古代的中国室内空间表现的风味，我认为可以分为三种形态，也是三种气质的表现。
（一）表现“敦厚稳重，端庄气派”的感觉，可称之为“典雅之气”。是正统的中国古典风味。
（二）表现一种“潇洒飘逸，含蓄优雅”的气质，可称之为“领袖之气”。属于文人雅士的品味，是艺术家的风格。
（三）表现“纯朴古拙”的味道，追求“返朴归真”的理想，可称之为“乡土之气”。这种表现可以感觉出与自然或人与土地之间的结合。
以上三种都是中国传统风格表现出的不同形态。此外在某些时段，中国人还是喜欢一种热闹、丰富、欣欣向荣、喜气洋洋的气氛，如果年过节或喜庆时候的布置。 三、现代中式风格的体现
现代建筑与传统中国建筑相比，确实有了极大的改变，室内空间当然也变了。而且时代改变了，社会结构、经济、政治等大环境也变了，甚至现代人的思想、需求、价值标准及美学观都有了很大的改变。故从理论上来看，现代中式风格的室内设计，应是传统的中国室内空间与现代建筑空间的配合，与现代美学观的配合，与现代设计观念的配合。在现在这个转变的过渡时期里，室内设计的中国风格表现的形式我热味可以归纳为三种。

（二）室内空间设计上表现中国精神的方式
也可以说在内在精神上、品味上体现了中国的气质。事实上，这是一种非常难的设计方法，因为1.现代建筑具有着现代空间，用现代空间表现出中国传统空间的精神或气质，事实上是一种感觉上的问题。设计者必须具备相当的条件，才能创造的出。感觉的人也同样得要具备相当的条件，才能感觉得出。这样好像一是属于纯艺术的创作层面了，因为创作者和欣赏者的沟通都是很主观的。2.古代的中国风格的表现，从汉唐的粗壮雄浑，到宋代的朴实典雅，至明清而日趋精细复杂，每个时代的表现都有相当大的差异。完全要靠设计者本身的修养和品位来发挥其精神，所以说这种设计的方式很难。
（三）以比例和强调的手法，再加上一点隐语或夸张的方式，利用现代的设计观念和材料、技术，靠造型或色彩或图案及质感来表现出中国风味
由于设计观念及美学观的改变，家具的表现方式，在中国传统的室内空间里和现代室内空间里有很大的不同：

尊重每一个体的价值，可以“个别”“单独”的使用。
2.传统的用法讲求“整齐”、“对称”的配置，现代设计的用法可以是“自由的”、“不规则”的组合。
3.传统的表现要求“统一”、“和谐”，不论在造型、质感和色彩上都要突出和谐安静的美感。现代设计则可以从“混合”与“复杂”的观念出发，运用“对比”、“强调”的效果，得到变化中的美感。 （四）古典中式与现代元素的结合
有不少人以为中国古典家具，不适合用在现代的空间里，或是认为传统家居实用价值很低，甚至不能使用。其实只要了解上面这三点，知道在现代空间里要用现代的设计观念来运用家具，以适合现代的生活和美学观，就不会产生怀疑了。我把现代室内设计中，运用中国古典家居的特殊方法可归纳为三种：
1.“搭配”。在现代的设计理念里，认为所有美好的、有价值的东西，不管它是中国的还是西洋的古典风格，或是以现代材料作的现代造型的家具，每样东西的表情虽不相同，基本上却具有一种共通性，因为他们只用不同的方式，来表现一种相同的价值。在室内设计里，可以自由的选择不同风格和形式的家具或艺术品，运用设计的技巧，依现代美学观来组合，甚至可以是古今中外的艺术风格汇聚一堂，不但不冲突反而更具变化和丰富的趣味。其实表现出来的倒不一定是中国风格或是西方风味，而是使用者个人的风格。所以重要的是你所选择的物品，那正是个人修养和品位的反映。
2.“翻新设计”。把老式家具或民艺品更新设计赋予新貌，使有新
