The “Give It Up for Earth Day” encourages people to commit to giving up actions that are harmful to the environment, such as using poisonous cleaners.

Throughout the month of April, Canadians are being asked to “Give It Up for Earth

Day,” Earth Day has been celebrated every year on April 22 since 1970. Earth Day Canada president Jed Goldberg says that as people become more environmentally aware, they want to find ways to reduce their environmental influence, not just celebrate one special event. “Earth Day is a great launching pad for thinking about environmental action every day,” said Goldberg. “Choosing healthier options, even for the short term, can lead to thinking about the influence of our decisions for a lifetime.”

That's the reason behind the “Give It Up for Earth Day” campaign. It's designed to encourage healthy habits that benefit people and the planet. It challenges everyone to help create a healthier world by making changes in their daily routine.

“We wanted to plan an actiontargeted campaign that will give people a chance to act on their concern for the environment in a positive way,” said Goldberg.

The campaign has identified four daily actions that can add up to huge environmental savings. They include pledging (保证) to turn off the TV, give up the use of poisonous cleaners, reduce consumption of consumer products and cut out meat.

At the end of April, all of the pledges will be recorded and converted (转化) into the number of TV hours not watched, dollars not spent on unnecessary items, electricity saved, greenhouse gas emissions (排放) avoided by cutting out meat, and poisonous chemicals produced from homes and landfills.

“What we're trying to achieve this year for Earth Day is to give people a chance to do something that is meaningful and measurable,” said Goldberg. 56.The aim of the campaign mentioned in the passage is to ________. A. enable people to save more money for future use B.help people develop environmentally friendly habits C.prevent people from making changes in their daily routine D.warn people against reducing consumption of consumer products 57.Which disagrees with the spirit of “Give It Up for Earth Day”? A.Switching off TV. B.Riding bikes.

C.Using poisonous cleaners. D.Saving electricity.

Have you been told you have penicillin allergy? Did your parents tell you that you had a reaction as an infant or child, so you should never take it again? Has it been so long since you had a reaction to penicillin that you don't remember what happened? If you fit any of these descriptions or are just not sure if you have penicillin allergy, there's good news for you: Chances are, you probably don't have it.

Between 10 to 20 percent of Americans believe they have a penicillin allergy, but a recent study at Mayo Clinic found that only 10 percent of those people are truly penicillin allergic. In other words, 9 out of 10 people who think they have penicillin allergy are avoiding it for no reason. Even in people with documented allergy to penicillin, only about 20 percent are still allergic 10 years after their initial allergic reaction. It's not necessarily a permanent condition.

Why is this important? Aren't there many other antibiotics you can use if you have penicillin allergy? Penicillin has been around since 1928. Penicillin and its related medicines include amoxicillin, methicillin and amoxicillin-clavulnate. These medicines are highly effective treatments for many bacterial infections, such as strep throat and ear infections. Of course, there are alternative antibiotics, but these are often much more expensive and carry a higher risk of side effects. Typically, these alternative antibiotics are broad-spectrum, meaning they fight many types of bacteria, both good and bad. That can lead to development of drug-resistant bacteria, or deadly “superbugs”. This increases the risk for all of us in the future of not having an effective antibiotic to treat our infection.

How do you find out if you have penicillin allergy? Board-certified allergists can test you. First, the allergist will get a history from you about your possible allergy. Typical questions include: How long ago did you have the reaction? What type of reaction occurred, and how soon after you took the penicillin did the reaction appear? The testing is done on the forearm by pricking the skin with a needle. If the results are negative and there is no reaction, penicillin will be injected in the skin. These tests are not painful, and results are available in 15 minutes. A positive reaction may lead to some swelling and itching where the test was placed, which usually goes away within an hour.

In very rare cases, an allergic reaction occurs. This can include hives, swelling, wheezing

and/or difficulty breathing. The allergist is trained to treat this rare condition quickly if it happens. If all skin testing is negative, you may be given an oral dose of penicillin in the office. The oral drug challenge is used to verify that you don't have penicillin allergy. Usually, you'll be observed in the office for 30 minutes to make sure you have no problems.

If you find out you don't have a penicillin allergy, notify your physicians that it's now safe for you to take penicillin. They can take “penicillin allergy” off your chart for good! 58.Which is NOT the drawback of the alternative antibiotics? A. They cost much more than penicillin. B. They can treat many bacterial infections. C. They can result in drug-resistant bacteria. D. They also fight good bacteria when used. 59.If you have a positive reaction in skin tests, _______. A. you can’t leave the office within an hour B. your skin is supposed to swell and itch C. it is not safe for you to take penicillin D. you’ll be given an oral dose of penicillin 60.Which can replace the underlined word “verify”? A. confirm

B. attach

C. declare

D. control

“I don’t know the future,” shrugged Neo in 1999’s The Matrix. “I came here to tell you how it’s going to begin.” With him, on-screen and off, The Matrix pulled audiences into the future of cinema.

The Matrix. Magnolia. Being John Malkovich. Fight Club. The Blair Witch Project. The Sixth Sense. Office Space. Man on the Moon. The Talented Mr. Ripley. Boys Don’t Cry. Three Kings. Toy Story 2. The Iron Giant. Eyes Wide Shut. Cruel Intentions. Election. American Pie. Notting Hill and Runaway Bride. 1999 might be the greatest year of modern cinema. I think so. If you aren’t crazy about two-thirds of these films, do you even like movies?

1What’s certain, however, is that 1999 is the most vital year of modern cinema— the ○moment that Hollywood featured the chosen ones who would become the heroes of the new

millennium (千禧年), from David Fincher to Spike Jonze to a young girl named Angelina Jolie, who introduced herself to the public by winning best supporting actress for playing a mental patient.

2What explains 1999’s extraordinary films? DVD sales began in 1997 and flooded studios ○with extra cash, especially in those first years as home viewers built their collection. Studios invested their money in a generation of upstart (初出茅庐的) directors, predicting that audiences would buy a good film twice: once in the theater, and again for their shelf.

Suddenly, the geniuses who’d been discovered during the independent wave in Sundance Film Festival in the 1990s were entrusted ( 委托) with millions of dollars. It was a creative renaissance. Directors seized the chance to get weird. Paul Thomas Anderson scored $37 million to shoot Magnolia. David O Russell shouldered $47 million to satirize (讥讽) the Gulf war. Even Spike Jonze, a music video director with zero film credits to his name, secured $13 million to transport audiences to a multiverse (多元宇宙).

3These up-and-coming directors became major 21st-century voices. Part of the reason ○Anderson, Russell and Jonze are still the kings is that today’s directors haven’t been given the same golden ticket. The talent exists; the cash doesn’t. Ambitious mid-priced films went extinct when the DVD empire began to fall apart in 2008. Instead of betting on filmmakers with personal styles, studios put their chips on big screen superheroes. Stand out at this year’s Sundance, and instead of being handed the freedom to dream, you’ll be given the keys to a special permission—and a conference table of producers as supervisors. Or you’ll stay small forever, struggling to be seen amid the crush of streaming media competing for the audience’s attention.

4Have a close look at the films of 1999 and we have a suspicion that we’re stuck in The ○Matrix ourselves. The near past is repeating like an endless programme. But we’re also feeling a deeper connection to 1999. The Year 2000 panic triggered filmmakers to think pessimistically about the future of human survival. And some of the directors feared that mankind had become too weak and materialistic to survive the millennium.

Therefore, in 1999 our heroes didn’t win. They failed. They disappeared. They died. They blew up their world. But some film-makers still believe that the future is our world and we can change our tomorrow.
