major source of pollution in the air. Some authorities believe that even the burning of wood and charcoal in fireplace and barbeques can release significant quantities of soot into the air. Another type of pollution is the release of noxious gases, such as sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and chemical vapors. These can take part in further chemical reactions once they are in the atmosphere, forming smog and acid rain.

Pollution also needs to be considered inside our homes, offices, and schools. Some of these pollutants can be created by indoor activities such as smoking and cooking. Planning and preparation are necessary when traveling with family pets.

Consider whether your pet is comfortable when traveling. Some animals, like some people, act better in familiar surroundings. A car-sick animal can make a trip miserable for everyone. If this is the case, discuss with your veterinarian whether it is possible to use a reliable pet-sitter or a clean, well-managed facility.

If you will be staying with friends along the way, be considerate. Find out in advance if the pet is welcome. The same goes for hotels, parks, and camps. Always check whether pets are allowed. If the pet must be left alone in a hotel room, place a “Do Not Interrupt” sign on the door and let the front desk know it. Consider bringing along your pet’s “Small room” for use in hotel rooms, the homes of friends or relatives who are not comfortable with your pet loose when no one is at home.

When you travel with your pet by car or plane, be sure your pet is rightly identified with a tag. Feed, bathe and comb your pet before a trip to make your pet more comfortable.

When crossing state or international borders, you must be sure that you have brought your pet’s health certif1cate with you. Before any trip, consult your veterinarian about the pet’s health and
