B

Thirteen can be a challenging age. Not only did I have to adapt to my changing body, but I also had to deal with my parents' bitter divorce, a new family and the upsetting move from my country home to a crowded town.

When we moved, my beloved companion, a small brown pony had to be sold. I was heartbroken and terribly lonely. I couldn't eat or sleep and cried all the time. Finally, realizing how much I missed my pony, my father bought me another horse, Cowboy.

Cowboy was without doubt the ugliest horse in the world. But I didn't care. I loved him beyond all reason.

I joined a riding club. When Cowboy and I entered the events where the horse was judged by appearance, we were quickly “shown the gate”. I knew nothing could turn Cowboy into a beauty. My only chance to compete would be in the timed speed events. I chose the jumping race.

For the whole next month we practiced running and jumping for hours in the hot sun and then I would walk Cowboy home, totally exhausted.

All of our hard work didn't make me feel confident by the time the show came. One girl named Becky rode a big brown horse in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons. I sat at the gate

and sweated all out while I watched Becky and her horse charge through the court and finish in first place.

My turn finally came. At the signal, we dashed toward the first fence, jumped over it without trouble and raced on to the next one. Cowboy then flew over the second, third and fourth fences like a bird and I turned him toward the finish line.

No cheers filled the air. The end of our run was met with surprising silence. Cowboy and I had beaten Becky and her fancy horse by two seconds.

I gained much more than a blue ribbon that day. At thirteen, I realized that no matter what the odds are, I'd always come out a winner if I wanted something badly enough to work for it. I can be the owner of my fate.

4.Why did the author like Cowboy so much in spite of its ugliness? A.Because she loved horses more than anything else. B.Because Cowboy was a strong and smart young horse. C.Because Cowboy had a lot in common with her pony. D.Because she was sad and lonely and needed a companion.

5.The audience fell into silence at the end of the run probably because ________. A.they didn't expect Cowboy would win the event B.they were unhappy that Becky was beaten in the event C.they didn't like Cowboy, for it was too ugly D.they never saw a horse running as fast as Cowboy

根据第六段中的“One girl named Becky rode a big brown horse in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons”和倒数第二段中的“The end of our run was met with surprising silence”可知,Becky夺冠是众望所归,所以当作者和其貌不扬的Cowboy获胜时,人们感到非常意外,一下都变得沉默了。

6.After the competition, the author came to realize that ________. A.she ought to gather the courage to solve all the problems

B.it was time to forget her pony and treat Cowboy better C.she needed to work harder to win more blue ribbons D.she could be the god of her own fate if she tried hard enough

根据最后一段中的“At thirteen, I realized that no matter what the odds are, I'd always come out a winner if I wanted something badly enough to work for it. I can be the owner of my fate”可知,作者意识到自己通过足够的努力可以主宰自己的命运。

7.It can be inferred from the passage that ________. A.all of their hard training was totally in vain B.a blue ribbon must be the second highest prize

C.Cowboy lost in the events of being judged by appearance D.both Becky and the author won the jumping event

第三段的第一句表示Cowboy是世界上最丑的马,结合第四段中的“When Cowboy and I entered the events where the horse was judged by appearance, we were quickly ‘shown the gate’.”

C

So much of body language is influenced by our culture. Whether we meet each other with a handshake, a kiss on the cheek, or a forehead touch, each greeting is completely dependent on culture.

These cultural expressions are dictated by what are called “display rules”, the specific expectations every group has about body language behavior. For example, you only have to stand on line for a bus in San Francisco to see an interesting difference in cultural display rules about personal space. If you queue (排队) up for a bus on Market Street in the business district at rush hour, you'll stand in a very orderly line, with a three-foot bubble of personal space, your fellow passengers busily tapping their BlackBerries without so much as a glance at you. But if you board the bus in Chinatown, you might find yourself a part of a group of people, stomachs pressed against backs, each person vying for a seat at the same time on that same bus. Cultural display rules differ from country to country, state to state, even city to city. For example, in the United States as well as in most other countries, nodding your head up and down is a signal explained as “yes”. We use it to emphasize (强调) a point when we say yes, or we simply use it nonverbally to show agreement. In Bulgaria, however, shaking your head from side to side means “yes” and nodding your head up and down means “no”. That would be an important difference to be aware of if you were stuck at a Bulgarian train station in the middle of the night.

As we become a global society, different cultural norms inch closer and closer to each other with each generation. The more exposure kids have to people of different cultures, the more likely they are to recognize a variety of people as “like me” as well. And we can show a great deal of

respect by learning those different display rules before we do business with people in other cultures. Knowing each others' display rules, and respecting them, is a huge step toward bridging cultural gaps with body language.

8.The underlined word “vying” in Paragraph 2 means “________”. A.competing C.asking

Blooking D.failing

根据第二段中的“stomachs pressed against backs”及“for a seat at the same time on that same bus”可知,此处是说人们为了一个座位“竞争(competing)”。

9.What's the main idea of Paragraph 3? A.Nodding head has several meanings. B.People use kinds of ways to show agreement. C.Cultural display rules are the same in Europe. D.Cultural display rules are different in different places.

第三段的首句“Cultural display rules differ from country to country, state to state, even city to city”是该段的主题句,下文所举的例子都是为了说明这一主题。

10.What's the author's opinion on learning different display rules? A.It helps hand down cultures.

B.It's the requirement of global economy. C.It outweighs learning foreign languages. D.It's important for communication across cultures.

根据最后一段中的“show a great deal of respect”和“a huge step toward bridging cultural gaps with language”可知,了解不同的文化表现规则意义重大。

11.What would be the best title for the text? A.Body language and its meaning B.The cultural gaps in different places C.The cultural aspects of body language D.How to greet people in different cultures

D
