me.
M: I can smell you. W: I can smell you, too. M: That’s my deodorant. Text 7
M: Hi, Maria. How often do you watch TV?
W: I usually read the newspaper in the morning, but when I come home from work at night, I sometimes watch TV. M: Do you have a favorite TV show? W: No.
M: OK. Another question. How often do you go to concerts? W: I really like going to concerts. I go maybe twice a month. M: And do you rent movies?
W: No, I don’t rent movies, but I download movies nearly every day. I like comedies, romantic movies and musicals. Text 8
M: Grist Clothing. May I help you?
W: This is Pat Jones from Hope Industries. May I speak to George Grist? M: Oh, Ms Jones! This is George Grist speaking. How are you?
W: I’m fine, thanks. I called to ask if I can come and show you our new line of swimsuits.
M: I’d like that. Say, I’m free after lunch. How about this afternoon, say … 1 o’clock? W: I’m afraid I can’t then, Mr Grist. I’ll be in a meeting all

afternoon. I wish I could
get out of it but …
M: I understand. Is Thursday at 3 o’clock okay? Are you free then? W: Hmm … I think I am, but let me check. Uh, yes, 3 o’clock is fine. M: Great. I’ll see you then, Ms Jones. W: Thank you, Mr Grist. Bye. Text 9
M: I don’t understand. According to the map, we should be in the right place. W: It doesn’t even look like the right neighborhood! Are you sure you followed the directions?
M: Yes. I printed them out from Google Maps earlier today. W: Oh, boy, then we’re really lost!
M: How do you know? According to Google, the party should be in that house over there.
W: Yeah – according to Google! Does it look like there’s a party in that house? The door is broken, the windows are broken, and there isn’t one light on! Well, I hope you’ve learned your lesson. M: What lesson?
W: Never trust Google Maps. It often doesn’t work.
M: It usually works for me. This is the first time it didn’t. But of course you’d think it’s a bad program, because you work for Yahoo.
W: Well, we can argue later. Let’s get out of here and find a gas station. We can ask for directions there.

It was raining heavily as I was walking up the hill toward the station at 6 o’clock on a Saturday morning. At this early hour, there wasn’t much traffic and there weren’t many people in sight. Just as I was crossing the road near the top of the hill, a car came around the corner. It was traveling very fast and the driver was obviously having difficulty controlling it. Suddenly it went off the road, hit a lamppost and turned over. At once I ran to the car to help the driver, but he was seriously hurt. A young woman hurried into the station and called the First Aid Center while I took care of the driver. A number of other people gathered round the car, but there wasn’t a great deal we could do. A policeman arrived a few minutes later and asked me a lot of questions about the accident. Shortly afterwards an ambulance arrived at a high speed and took him away to the hospital. Later, I went to the hospital to see the driver. I was told that his operation had been successful and that he was getting better quickly.
