Exercise one
[A]
Dussehra is one of the main festivals of India. It is mainly celebrated by Hindus around September or October. The celebration of Dussehra continues for almost ten days in some parts of India. The festival celebrates the victory of good over evil (邪恶).
Lord Rama killed Ravana because he had taken Sita, Rama’s wife, away by force. Hanuman helped Lord Rama to reach the kingdom of Ravana and save Sita from his captivity (监禁). Hanuman set Ravana’s kingdom on fire with his tail. Lord Rama had a fierce battle with Ravana and finally managed to kill him. Therefore, this day is celebrated as Dussehra.
Ram Lila is an important part of Dussehra. It is organized at different places. Different events from the life of Lord Rama are made into plays and presented on stage. The actors play the roles of Lord Rama, Sita, Hanuman, Ravana and other characters from Ramayana, a great long poem telling of the adventures of Rama. Parents usually take their children to watch such plays. It is a big source of amusement during this festival. Sometimes, a fair is organized alongside for the event. People can enjoy tasty food and delightful rides.
On Dussehra, people decorate their houses and make sweets and other delicious foods. They love to wear new clothes on this day.
On the day of Dussehra, huge models of Ravana, Kumbhakarna and Meghnad are put up. These models are filled with crackers (爆竹). In the evening, the public gathers around these models at a distance. Then, the person who performs the role of Rama shoots a fiery (燃烧着的) arrow at Ravana and the models start burning one by one. The crackers inside these models start bursting with a loud noise. In no time, the models are turned into ashes.
People happily return to their homes and exchange greetings with each other. The day teaches us an important lesson that good always wins and evil loses. 1. Which of the following was evil according to the text? A. Sita. B. Rama. C. Ravana. D. Hanuman.
2. Which word can be used to describe Ram Lila? A. Serious. B. Complex. C. Frightening. D. Entertaining.
3. Who will set fire to the huge models? A. An actor playing Rama. B. An actor playing Ravana. C. Someone from the audience. D. Someone making the crackers. 4. What does the text aim to tell us about? A. The origins of Ram Lila. B. A great long poem of India. C. An important Indian festival. D. The lesson learned from Dussehra.
[B]
Although vaccines (疫苗) are required for entry into school in most places in the United States, the government does allow for exceptions, like religious reasons.
In the last few years, the rates of vaccine-preventable illness have been on the rise. In most cases, these outbreaks (爆发) began with children who were unvaccinated. To deal with this threat, some schools in New York have been refusing to allow unvaccinated children to attend school. Several parents thought this was unfair and filed lawsuits (起诉). Just recently, though, a court ruled in favor of the city schools.
The court made the right decision. Vaccine policy depends not only on the added protection that vaccines provide for those who get shots, but also on the decreased likelihood that anyone will come into contact with the disease. This is known as community immunity. It refers to the fact that when enough people are immunized, then there really can’t be an outbreak. And if there can’t be an outbreak, then everyone is protected.
This is important, because there are people who cannot be given immunizations for various reasons. For example, small babies can’t be given all vaccines.
In 1995, the chicken pox (水痘) vaccine was introduced in the United States. Over time, more and more children received it. In 2011, a study looked at how the program affected the number of children who died from the disease.
The first thing noted in the paper was that death from chicken pox went down considerably after the vaccine was introduced. From 2001 through 2007, the rates of death remained much lower, with just a few children dying from chicken pox nationally each year.
What’s more from 2004 through 2007, not one child less than 1 year of age died in the United States from chicken pox. This is important, because we cannot give the chicken pox vaccine to babies. In other words, all those babies were saved not because we vaccinated them against this illness, but because older children were.
Therefore, people who refuse to vaccinate their children aren’t just putting themselves at risk — they’re putting everyone else in danger, too. 5. Whose interest did the judges take into consideration? A. Students’. B. School leaders’. C. Several parents’. D. Unvaccinated kids’.
6. What is needed to prevent disease outbreaks through “community immunity”? A. Requiring everyone to be immune. B. Vaccinating babies as early as possible. C. Making sure enough people get vaccinated. D. Separating unvaccinated people from vaccinated. 7. What does the study about the chicken pox vaccine show? A. The vaccine is safe for every kid. B. No deaths have been seen since 2004. C. The vaccine has lowered the death rate. D. The vaccine is more effective among babies. 8. Which of the following would the author agree with? A. No vaccine, no risk.
B. No vaccine, no school.
C. Vaccination is a personal choice. D. Vaccine-preventable illness is dropping. Exercise two
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Coin collecting
Do you collect anything? 1 Some people collect baseball cards or bottles. Others collect stamps, or dolls. There are almost as many types of collections as there are collectors. Coin collecting is one of the oldest and most popular types of collecting.
There are many different types of coin collections. Some collectors choose to collect foreign coins. Another popular way to collect is to choose a theme and then look for coins that have pictures of the animals, people, or objects that fit into that theme. 2
Many children have started collecting coins because of the United States Mint’s 50 State Quarters Program. In 1999, the U.S. Mint began a program in which they produced five new state quarters every year for 10 years. 3 For example, New York’s quarter has a picture of the Statue of Liberty, Georgia’s has a picture of a peach (the state symbol), and North Carolina’s has the Wright brothers’ airplane.
4 This depends on several factors (因素): the type of coin, the rarity of the coin, and the demand for the coin. If you owned a rare coin that few other people were interested in collecting, it would be worth much less than a rare coin that many other people would like to own. Condition also plays an important role in determining a coin’s worth. 5 They handle their coins only by the edges (边) or with special gloves. If you owned a coin, which is worth about one million dollars, you would probably be willing to give it special treatment, too! A. Some collections can become very valuable. B. Serious collectors store their coins very carefully. C. People enjoy learning about coins and their history. D. They like the challenge of finding rare or unusual coins. E. Collecting is a popular hobby with people all around the world.
F. Each quarter has a picture that represents something special about the state.
G. For example, a collector may search for coins with pictures of ships, birds, or even royalty.
