Some people make you feel comfortable when they are around. You spend an hour talking to them and feel as if you have known them half your life. These good talkers have something in common. And once we know what it is, we can try to do it ourselves.

First of all, good talkers ask questions. Almost anyone, no matter how shy he is, will answer a question. One well-known businesswoman says, “At business

lunches, I always ask people what they did that morning. It's a common question, but it will get things going.” From there you can move on to other matters—sometimes to really personal questions. And how he answers will let you know how far you can go.

Second, once good talkers have asked questions, they listen to the answers. Your questions should have a point. This helps to tell what kind of person you are talking to. And to find out, you really have to listen carefully. Real listening at least means some things. It means not to change the subject of conversation very often. If someone sticks to one topic, you can know that he’s really interested in it. Besides, real listening also means not just listening to words, but to tones* of voice. If the voice sounds boring, then, it's time for you to change the subject.

Finally, good talkers know well how to deal with the moment of leaving. If you're saying good-bye, you may give him a friendly handshake and say, \meeting you.\If you want to see that person again, don't keep it a secret. Let people know what you feel, and they may walk away feeling as if they've known you half their life.

29. Most people will __________ no matter how shy he is.

A. make you comfortable B. ask many questions

B. become good talkers D. answer a question B. listen to the answer carefully D. give him a friendly handshake

B. never changes the subject of the talk D. always makes his voice sound boring

D. Europe

28. Only the Metropolitan Museum of Art has works from __________.

B. Asia

30. You should ________ to know what kind of the person you are talking to. A. have business lunches with him C. share your secret with him

31. A real listener is a person who _______. A. knows when they should change the topic C. is good at making any topic interesting

A. “What did you do this morning?”

32. Which of the following might a good talker say while he is leaving?

B. “I think it’s time to go now. Good-bye!”
