Passage 3

The Earth has a force that pulls things toward itself. We call this force gravity. This is something we live with all the time, and we take it for granted and hardly ever think about it. But it is a most important factor in rocket operation and must be overcome if we are to get anywhere in space, or off the ground at all.

Take the throwing of a ball as an example. The harder the ball is thrown, the faster and higher it will go. What is the secret? Its speed. If we could throw the ball hard enough it would go up and up forever and never come down. The speed at which it would have to be thrown to do this is known as escape speed. Of course, we cannot throw a ball hard enough because the speed required to escape completely from the Earth’s gravity is seven miles per second, or over twenty-five thousand miles per hour.

Once escape speed has been reached by a spacecraft, no further power is needed. A rocket aimed at the Moon, for instance, will “coast” the rest of the way because the Earth’s gravity cannot then pull it back, and there is no air resistance in space to slow it down. This “coasting” is known as “free fall”. That does not mean the rocket is falling down towards the Earth but that it is traveling freely in space without the aid of power, like a bicycle coasting downhill.

Free fall is an important feature of space travel: it would be impossible to carry enough fuel to provide powered flight all the time 11. Gravity is a force that C .

A.all heavenly bodies attract things towards themselves B.human being think about all the time

C.a rocket must overcome before it is launched into the space D.we live without in our life on earth.

12. Escape speed can be achieved only if we can launch the rocket at the speed of B . A. move freely along B. area next to the sea C. rotate D. find out

14. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? B

A. Everyone can throw the ball hard enough to make it go up forever.

B. Escape speed is a speed at which something can escape from the earth’s gravity

C. The power is still needed to push it forward when a spacecraft has been in outer space D. There is air resistance in space

15. What is the main topic of the conversation? C A.How earth’s gravity affect space travel B.How spacecraft are made

C. What important factors are in rocket operation? D. Why a bicycle can coast downhill

Passage4

When weather is hot, you go to a lake or an ocean. When you are near a lake or an ocean, you feel cool. Why? The sun makes the earth hot, but it cannot make the weather very hot. Although, the air over the earth becomes hot, the air over the water stays cool. The hot air over the earth rises. Then the cool air over the water moves in and takes the place of the hot air. When you are near a lake or an ocean, you feel the cool air when it moves in .You feel the wind, and the wind makes you feel cool.

Of course, scientists cannot answer all of our questions. If we ask, “Why is the ocean full of salt?” scientists will say that the salt comes form rocks. When a rock gets very hot or very cold, it cracks. Rain falls into the cracks. The rain then carries the salt into the earth and into the rivers. The rivers carry the salt into the ocean. But then we ask, “What happens to the salt in the ocean? The ocean does not get more salty every year.” Scientists are not sure about the answer o this question.

We know a lot about our world. But there are still many answers that we do not have, and we are curious. 1. The main idea of the passage is ____A________.

A. people feel cool when they are near a lake or an ocean B. scientists can explain everything we want to know C. scientists can explain many things except one thing D. the salt in the ocean comes from rocks

C. there are answers they do not have D. there are a lot of interesting stories about it Passage 5

If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they will become weak, when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to know that memory works in the same way.

When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong.

If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parent may be blamed, and few of us know that it is just his own fault. Have you ever found that some people can’t read or write but usually they have better memories? This is because they cannot read or write and they have to remember thing, they cannot write them down in a small notebook. They have to remember days, names songs and stories, so their memory is the whole time being exercises.

So if you want to have a good memory, learn from people ; practices remembering things in a way as other people do. 6. Someone can’t have a good memory if __B______. A. he can’t read or write B. he doesn’t use his memory

C. his parents haven’t a good memory D. he doesn’t use his arms or legs for some time 7. If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, ______D___________. A. they become weak forever. B. they are always strong.

A. how to use our arms or legs B. how to have strong arms C. how to have a good memory D. how to learn from the people Passage 6
