As a young boy,Abraham Lincoln got to know the law when he read his first law book,Revised Statutes of Indiana.Later he read more law books by himself and dreamed of becoming a lawyer.Once he read all the books required,he decided to take his bar exam(律师资格考试).He passed the exam and received his law license on September 9,1836.
Lincoln continued studying hard after he became a lawyer.According to William Herndon, his partner,Lincoln would lie in bed and read by candlelight, sometimes until two o'clock in the morning, while his workmates were sleeping.
He disliked office work, such as writing legal papers and writing letters, and he left all that to Herndon. When either Lincoln or Herndon received a fee they divided the money immediately. But if his partner were not in the office at the time,Lincoln would wrap up half of the money in a piece of paper,on which he would write \,giving the name of the case, and place it in his partner's desk.
And in court,Lincoln also did very well.Even when he had a weak case he was a strong defender, and when he had fairness on his side,as he nearly always had,no one could beat him.He loved to support those whom he knew to be wronged, but he would stop making any effort if he discovered he was on the wrong side.
Once, while working on a case,Lincoln found that his client's case was not a good one,and he refused to defend. His partner, who felt differently about the case, defended the client and won the case. The fee was nine hundred dollars, half of which was given to Lincoln, but he refused to accept a single cent of it.
1.What do we learn about Lincoln from Paragraph 1? A.He disliked reading law books at first.
