Questions 36-40 are based on the following passage

Do you know how to use a mobile phone without being rude to the people around you? Talking during a performance irritates (激怒) people. If you are expecting an emergency call, sit near the exit doors and set your phone to vibrate (振动). When your mobile phone vibrates, you can leave quietly and let the others enjoy the performance. Think twice before using mobile phones in elevators, museums, churches or other indoor public places — especially enclosed spaces. Would you want to listen to someone’s conversation in these places? Worse yet, how would you feel if a mobile phone rang suddenly during a funeral? It happens more often than you think. Avoid these embarrassing situations by making sure your mobile phone is switched off. When eating at a restaurant with friends, don’t place your mobile phone on the table. This conveys the message that your phone calls are more important than those around you. Mobile phones have sensitive microphones that allow you to speak at the volume you would on a regular phone. This enables you to speak quietly so that others won’t hear the details of your conversation. If you are calling in a noisy area, use your hand to direct your voice into the microphone. 36. What should you do when you need to answer a phone call during a performance? A. Call back after the performance. B. Answer it near the exit door. C. Talk outside the exit door. D. Passage 2

Questions 41-45 are based on the following passage

During the Christmas shopping rush in London, the interesting story was reported of a tramp (流浪者) who, apparently though no fault of his own, found himself locked in a well-known chain store late on Christmas Eve. No doubt the store was crowded with last-minute Christmas shoppers and the staff were dead beat and longing to get home. Probably all the proper security checks were made before the store was locked and they left to enjoy the three-day holiday untroubled by customers desperate to get last-minute Christmas presents.

However ridiculous that may be, our tramp found himself alone in the store and decided to make the best of it. There was food, drink, bedding and camping equipment, of which he made good use. There must also have been television sets and radios. Though it was not reported if he took advantage of these facilities, when the shop reopened he was discovered in bed with a large number of empty bottles beside him. He seems to have been a man of good humor as indeed tramps very commonly are. Everyone else was enjoying Christmas, so he saw no good reason why he should not do the same. He yielded himself cheerfully, and was taken by the police. Perhaps he had had a better Christmas than usual. He was sent to prison for seven days. The judge awarded no compensation (赔偿) to the chain store for the food and drink our tramp had consumed. They had, in his opinion, already received valuable free publicity from the story revealed in the newspaper and on television. Perhaps the judge had a good Christmas, too. 41. The tramp was locked in the store . A. for 7 days B. on purpose C. by accident D. for security reasons

45. The judge didn’t award compensation to the chain store because . A. the store was responsible for what happened B. the report of the event benefited the store a lot C. the tramp had stolen nothing of value D. the tramp was penniless

Passage 3

Questions 46-50 are based on the following passage

The atmosphere and oceans are not the only parts of the environment being damaged. Rain forests are being quickly destroyed as well, and their survival is questionable. E. O. Wilson, a biologist at Harvard, calls the depletion (枯竭、耗尽) of rain forest areas “the greatest extinction since the end of the age of dinosaurs (恐龙)”.

Unlike some environmental issues, rain forest depletion has fortunately received significant public and media attention. Despite the opposition to the cutting down of rain forests, the problem continues. Every year, Brazil chops down one area of forest the size of the state of Nebraska. In addition to the Amazon’s rain forests, many other forests are being cut down as well. In Indonesia, Zaire, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, Burma, the Philippines, Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, and Venezuela, rain forests that were once great have been lost. According to some estimates, 50 million acres of rain forest are cut down every year. The United Nations says the figure is closer to 17 million acres. The World Wildlife Fund says that every minute, 25 to 50 acres are cut or burned to the ground. The world’s growing population has been a primary reason of rain forest destruction. More people need land to live on and wood products to consume. Limiting population growth may be the first in a series of steps that would limit the destruction of the rain forests. 46. In the opinion of the author, ______ are being destroyed terribly at present. A. the oceans B. the atmosphere C. the rain forests D. all the above

47. Why did Wilson regard “the greatest extinction since the end of the age of dinosaurs” to be the depletion of rain forest areas?

A. The writer did not give his explanation in detail. B. The rain forests’ survival is questionable.

C. It will become warmer and warmer with the depletion of rain forests.

D. Many wild animals and beasts will extinct as result of the depletion of rain forests.

D. People have stopped cutting down rain forests because of the opposition of most people. 50. Why did the depletion of rain forests result from the world’s growing population?
