When I was very young, I usually watched my grandma throwing out the crusts of the bread that were not fresh for the birds. Not surprisingly, this attracted few birds apart from the odd sparrow or starling. Later on, we discovered packets of \brought in more interesting species. Since then feeding garden birds has come a long way for me. Today, I can enjoy a wide variety of birds. Sometimes I wonder if we might be feeding our garden birds better than our kids.
All this comes at a cost to us of an estimated £200 million a year. But I firmly believe what the scientists from a university said, “Our generosity is having a major effect on the behavior, ecology and even evolution of these familiar species. ” Take the goldfinch for example. When I began birding in the 1960s, this was a fairly rare bird, found along low bushes or in fields with weeds. Today, they can be seen in four out of five gardens.
During the bitter winter of 1890-1891, workers in London gave the small amount of their packed lunches to starving songbirds. And in the 1980s, the British were encouraged to offer food to garden birds. Then, in 2005, came Springwatch, who put paid to the widespread belief that we should only feed garden birds during the winter. In fact, we should provide food all year round: the most crucial time is the early spring, when natural resources are at their lowest.
Some argue with greater reasons that because most birds coming to feeders are the larger, commoner and more aggressive species, they will gain an unfair advantage over the smaller and weaker ones. But this ignores one major benefit of feeding garden birds — the way it connects millions of people to the natural world. This is especially important for people who may find it hard to gain access to the wider countryside, including young children and sick, old, disabled people who prefer to stay at home most of time.

Body language varies significantly across cultures. But what remains consistent across all known cultures are microexpressions. Microexpressions occur in everyone in a second, often without their knowledge. These facial expressions including surprise, anger, fear, disgust, happiness, and so on can reveal our true feelings about another person or situation.
People might try to hide or obscure (模糊)them in different ways informed by culture, but to a practiced reader the true emotions are always visible. In the Philippines, showing both positive and negative emotion is a sign of openness and honesty. But visible negative emotion is seen as rude or aggressive while expressing too much positive feeling is considered embarrassing in Japan. However, when we evaluate people from both countries for their microexpressions, we find that they actually experience emotions at more or less the same level of frequency.
A few years ago, my husband and I traveled to Qatar to lead a body language discussion for 200 HR (人力资源)leaders. Women's bodies were completely covered, so we couldn't see the posture or gestures. When standing on stage, all the men looked only at my husband and all the women merely at me. Luckily, we knew from the videos we'd previously made of Qataris that the flashes of emotion in their faces reflected the same feelings we might find from audience members anywhere else in the world. And so we could adjust what we want to show accordingly, and felt just as comfortable as we would have at home.
To recognize and understand miroexpressions, you should first study the common microexpressions to know the typical feature of each. And then educate yourself on the local body language --- including masking techniques before visiting or interacting with another culture. Third, when you're in the moment, pay much more attention. You can't interpret microexpressions if you don't notice them. Fourth, listen to your intuition (直觉).When you notice a tiny facial movement, ask yourself, \could that mean?” Besides, you might also try to imitate the movement.
28. What is special about microexpressions?

29. What is most useful for the body language discussion according to the author?
A. Getting well prepared. B. Being well organized.
C. Reacting with others actively D. Using body language accordingly.
30. Which stage will you be in if you keep your focus on othersface?
’
A. Step One. C. Step Three.
31. What is the best title of the passage?
B. Step Two. D. Step Four.
D
A. Developing Greater Social Skills B. Getting Better at ReadingPeople C. Behaving More Differently in Public D. Learning More about Microexpressions
Scientists from around the world examined whether supplements marketed are good for brain health, particularly in those aged over 50. Despite the claims of some supplements that they could improve cognitive (认知的)skills, no clear evidence was found to back this up.
The report said, \supplements for brain health found no benefit in people with normal nutrient levels. It's unclear whether people who lack nutrition can benefit their brains by taking a supplement. The pills failed to protect against dementia (痴呆)and did not slow the process or improve the symptoms of the disease and the report said that a healthy diet rich in fruit and vegetables, being physically active and getting sufficient sleep were linked to better brain function. ”
The value of the food supplement marketed in Britain is expected to reach more than £1 billion by 2012 and supplements sold on the high street for brain performance cost up to £26 for 60 pills. And Caroline Abrahams, the charity director at Age UK said that people were better off spending money to improve diets.
The report did find evidence suggesting that supplements could benefit people diagnosed with lacking vitamin. It added that these should only be taken if advised by a doctor because some supplements could interact with medicines or contain high levels of nutrients, which could be deadly. Supplements were not strictly controlled in the way that medicines were and may not contain high-quality ingredients or what was on the label, the report said.
The Health Food Manufacturers' Association, which represents the British supplement industry, said that the report was based on the American market. In Britain products could only make claims approved by the European Food Safety Authority, such as the zinc (锌)contributed to normal cognitive functions, a spokesman said.
32. What is the finding of the scientists about the supplements?
A. They bring about no positive effect. B. They break the balance of normal life. C. They get people to get addicted to them. D. They are hardly suitable for the younger.
33. The author uses the third paragraph to show people should ___________ .
A. be aware of their needs clearly C. take control of the market strictly
B. change their daily diets regularly D. make use of their money properly
34. What should people do if they do need to take supplements? A. Follow professional suggestions. B. Be sure of the vitamins they lack. C. Refer to the instructions of the labels. D. Avoid taking together with other medicines. 35. What do the British authorities think of the report?
A. Annoying.
C. Worrying.
B. Unacceptable. D. Favorable.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
There are many barriers on the way to success. Fortunately, most of them can be overcome. 36 I'd like to show the four most important strategies I know to overcome success barriers.
Decide what success means to you.
Everybody wants success. For some, success means making a lot of money; for others it means having great relationships with great people. If you're not clear on what success means to you, you're going to chase an unclear version of success, which is considered as a major barrier in achieving it. 37 You're never going to catch it.
Look at the barrier as an outsider.
Imagine that the goal you want to reach is not yours — it's someone else's. And the obstacle that prevents reaching it is theirs as well. And as an outsider, you have a taste for problem solving. 38 It's like seeing your situation with new eyes, and often you'll be amazed at the resolutions you'll see with these new eyes.
Inform yourself.
39 They have a good comprehension of the situation and the obstacle, so it's easy for
them to see appropriate ways to overcome it. How to do these? By constantly learning, especially in the areas where you want to achieve performance, and keeping yourself very well informed.
Keep trying.
I find that many people don't overcome obstacles because they only try one or two ways to overcome it, and if these don't work, they give up. In order to overcome the obstacle, you'll need to try several solutions, and move from one to another based on the results you get. 40_____
