Want to live longer? Win an Oscar.

A new study says that actors who received the award earn more than larger paychecks. So when 94-year-old Katharine Hephburn once remarked that she was respected internationally

“ like an old building

”, she had no idea that her four Oscars

directly influenced her longevity.

The study says winning actors will live 3.9 years longer than their losing counterparts ( 对手 ). Actors who have won more than once, like Hepburn, live up to six years longer than those who were

nominated ( 提名 ) but never won.

“ We found that they died from the same things we all die from

— cancer, heart

disease, but they fought them a bit longer and diseases came a bit later, ” says Dr. Donald Redelmeier, the lead author of the study. Redelmeier says the sense of success and satisfaction makes one

So Redelmeier and his team of researchers looked back through the 73 years of Oscar Awards

nominees ( 被提名者 ) and winners to see how long each of them lived.

For each nominated performer, the group looked at another member who was not nominated but acted in the same film, had the same sex and was about the same age. A total of 1,649 performers were grouped according to whether they won, were nominated and never won or never nominated.

The conclusion was that Oscar winners live an average 79.7 years. Those that didn ' t win lived an average 75.8 years. The average US 命 ) is 75 years old.

“ We found, too, that the life for those that had multi-nominations had the same life expectancy as those with just a single nomination and no win,

A stro ng wind can be a dan gerous thing — sometimes it is powerful eno ugh to kn ock you off your feet. But to plants, the wind is a source of new life, carrying them or their spores (孢子)thousands of miles.

A NASA satellite called QuickSCAT has discovered highways of wind over the Earth ' s ocea ns. Scie ntists believe these in visible roads may expla in why many nonflowering plants, such as

mosses (苔藓)and lichens (地衣),grow where they do.

The satellite is able to send microwaves from space to the surface of the ocean. The patter n of sig nals that come back shows which way the winds are blow ing.

Using this data , the scientists studied a group of islands in the southern hemisphere, n ear An tarctica. Winds tend to blow an ticlockwise in this regi on, but there are lots of local differe nces. When the researchers compared these local patter ns to bota ni cal data, they found that the wind had an important effect on where species of mosses, lichens, and other non flowers pla nts grow. For example, Bouvet Isla nd and Heard Isla nd share 30 perce nt of their moss species, 29 percent of liverworts (叶苔),and 32 percent of lichens

— even though

they are 4,430 kilometers apart. In con trast, Gough Isla nd and Bouvet Isla nd, separated by just 16 perce nt of mosses and 17 perce nt of liverworts. They have no liche ns in com mon.

Ferns (蕨类植物)and flowering plants don' t travel as well in the wind, so they

don' t show the same kinds of distrubuti on ( 分布)patter ns. 64. This story is about . B. how wi nd travels

C. how wind affects differe nt pla nts D. one functions of the wind
