John Chapman was born in Leominster, Massachusetts, in 1774. When John Chapman was old enough, he travelled to the state of Pennsylvania, which was the first stop in what would become his lifelong effort to plant apple trees. After a few years, Chapman left the hills of western Pennsylvania and travelled west into the Ohio Valley. He transported(运输) sixteen bushels(蒲式耳:谷物和水果的容量单位,相当于8加仑) of apple seeds down the Ohio River in 1801.
Chapman was careful about where he planted apple seeds. First, he would find rich, fertile land in an open area. Then, he cleared the land, carefully removing(除去) unwanted plants. Then, he planted his seeds and built a fence around them, which helped keep the young trees safe from animals. As the trees grew, he returned to repair the fence and care for the land. Before long, Chapman’s trees were growing in fields across Ohio. People began calling him Johnny Appleseed.
Johnny Appleseed was a small man with lots of energy. He lived very simply. For years, he travelled alone in the wilderness without a gun or a knife. He slept in the open air and didn’t wear shoes on his feet. Some people gave him clothing as payment for his apple trees. Sometimes he wore a large cloth bag or sack(麻布袋) as clothing which had holes for his head and arms. On his head, he wore a metal

Can dogs help change problem teenagers’ behaviour? A unique TV show, Dog House, follows five unruly(难管教的) young students as they’re taught to become dog trainers. The idea is simple. Kids really like dogs. But can the skills in training dogs help the teenagers change their behaviour?
Liam was typical—14 years old, unpleasant, tough and about to leave school. Mary, Rob and Jack had similar problems—they couldn’t concentrate, they had serious anger problems. Rose was different. She was so shy that she could hardly talk with others; she suffered from sadness and had taken herself out of mainstream(主流) education.
Little by little, working with the dogs began to have an effect on the kids. But, in order to fully understand the importance of what they were doing, they needed to meet the disabled people who got help from these dogs. The meetings had a strong effect on the teenagers. After meeting Eileen and her dog Sailor, Liam changed his ways and they became friends finally.
Two months into the course Liam began to connect with the dogs too—particularly a young yellow Labrador(拉布拉多猎狗) called Aero. The relationship flourished so much that the dog often knew what the teenager wanted him to do even before he asked.
