Autumn is traditionally a time for fun and celebrations in many cultures. In Germany, for almost two centuries people of Bavaria have had Oktoberfest(十月节),a festival for eating, drinking, wearing costumes and enjoying the season. The first Oktoberfest began in 1810 when Prince Ludwig of Bavaria got married. The Prince organized a five-day festival to celebrate the event. Today the festival lasts almost 18 days and starts in September when the weather is best. It always takes place in Munich(慕尼黑), the capital of Bavaria.
Oktoberfest has many activities for celebration, but it is most famous for food, which is a central part of the celebration. Almost 220,000 pairs of sausages, 460,000 chickens and 88 oxen are eaten every year. 30 percent of yearly beer production is sold during the festival.
There is a lot more to do than just eat and drink, however, and people of all ages take part in the celebrations. The costume parade is an important part of the celebration. It is led by the “Munich child.” Behind the Munich child, a crowd of about 8,000 people walk dressed in fine costumes. Many of the costumes are traditional Bavarian clothes. Traditional music is played as well as German popular music. Exciting music and dancing as well as good food and drink have made Oktoberfest one of the most popular celebrations throughout Germany for almost two centuries.

On March 14, 2018, one of science’s brightest stars went dark. Stephen Hawking, the world-famous British scientist, died at 76 in Cambridge, UK.
Hawking is considered by many to be the greatest scientist in history since Albert Einstein. He came up with the theory that the universe began with the Big Bang(大爆炸) and will end in black holes. His theories became the base for a lot of later research. He also wrote books to help common people understand the universe. His most famous book is A Brief History of Time(《时间简史》),which has sold more than 10 million copies around the world, according to CNN. Besides his scientific achievements, Hawking was also someone had a strong will and optimistic(乐观的) attitude.
When Hawking was 21, he was diagnosed(诊断) with a serious illness that stopped him from walking and talking. Later in life, he had to sit in a wheelchair and “speak” using a computerized voice. But this didn’t stop him from living a meaningful and colorful life. “If one is physically disabled, one cannot afford to be psychologically(心理上) disabled as well,” he once said. Hawking traveled the globe to attend science conferences, visiting every continent, including Antarctica(南极洲). He was also a fan of pop culture and appeared on TV shows such as Star Trek and The Big Bang Theory. He celebrated his 60th birthday by going up in a hot-air balloon; when he was 65, he took part in a zero-gravity flight to experience weightlessness. He hoped to travel into space one day.

A recent announcement by scientists that they have successfully cloned the first human embryo has caused much debate and has shocked many people around the world.
On the one hand, some scientists point out that if you clone an embryo, you can produce valuable tissues and organs that could be used to save human lives. On the other hand, many people, including some scientists, disagree and fear that if mankind interferes with nature in this way, they may be on their way to producing a real-life Frankenstein’s monster.
Cloning is producing an exact copy of a plant or an animal using its cells. The first mammal to be cloned successfully from an adult cell was Dolly the sheep. She was born in 1996 and died in early 2003, at a much younger age than normal. When she was born, many people were angry because they thought cloning would create more disease in the animal world. However, in general the scientists were praised for their wonderful scientific breakthrough.
The Scottish scientists who created Dolly, Ian Wilmut, is shocked that some scientists are now considering cloning human beings. Although he researches cloning, his intention has never been to create copies of humans. Instead, he thinks research efforts should concentrate on creating new tissues and organs that could eventually be used to cure diseases like cancer.
Even though this use of cloning is causing a lot of anxiety, it is good news for Faye Wilson, a 41-year-old saleswoman who cannot have a baby. So some scientists are already pushing ahead with research to deliver a cloned human baby while cloning human embryos is illegal in many countries.
