Module 2 Traffic Jam

Introduction, Reading & Vocabulary

Teaching content:

Reading part of module introduces means of transportation in Beijing and it also contains some words about transportation and going out. Students can learn several words about transportation and practice their four basic language skills by leaning this part. Meantime, they can also know about the traffic situation in Beijing and they can feel the traffic problems deeply.

Teaching aims:

1. Knowledge aim:

1).To learn some words about traffic 2).To understand the main idea of the text 3).To learn to read with some reading strategies

2. Ability aim:

Improve students’ integrated abilities of listening, speaking, reading and writing

3. Emotional aim:

1) To know about traffic situation and problems in big cities 2) Improve students’ environmental and social morality awareness

Teaching important points:

1 To master some words about traffic such as fare, receipt and route and so on. . 2 To develop students’reading ability of skimming and scanning

Teaching difficult points:

How to make students fully understand the text

Analysis of students:

1. The Ss have known something about traffic through the Internet and other ways. 2. They are lack of vocabulary.

3. They are lack of motivation to use English that they have learnt

4. Some Ss are not active in the class because they are afraid of making mistakes.

Teaching methods :

Brain storm ; task-based teaching ;Question-and-answer activity teaching method communicative teaching,individual work;pair work ;group work .

Learning strategies :

Summarize words and phrases related to traffic ; get and process important information in the course of reading by using the reading abilities of skimming ,scanning and guessing new words from the context .

Teaching aids:Multimedia , a projector ,blackboard Teaching procedures:

Step 1 Lead in 1.

Arouse students’interest in the topic Getting around in Beijing by showing them a video of places of interest in Beijing. 2.

Brainstorm means of transportation, and then show some pictures of transport means to review and learn some words related to transport means and traffic. Step 2 Listening

1. Improve students’ listening ability by listening to the tape, with the task of finding out what means of transportation are mentioned in the tape in mind. (Individual work) 2. Check answers with students by showing the pictures of transport means mentioned in the text.

Step 3 Fast reading

Find the main idea of the passage by skimming (individual work) Question: Who might find the information useful?

Step 4 Scanning to find some specific information (First individual then pair work; then check answers with whole class)

Read the text again and answer questions according to the text. 1. How easy is it to find a taxi in Beijing? 2. What color are most taxis?

3. What's the problem with buses? 4. Which is the best bus for tourists? 5. How many people can get in a minibus? 6. What are the advantages of the underground? 7. When does it close at night? 8. What can you visit in a Pedi cab? Step 5 Fill the blanks (Group work)
