When I was a kid in Minnesota, watermelons were expensive. One of my father’s friends, Bernie, was a rich businessman, who owned a large store in St. Paul.
Every summer, when the first watermelons arrived, Bernie would call. Dad and I would go to Bernie’s place. We’d sit on the edge of the dock(码头), feet dangling(摇晃), and got ready for a big meal.
Bernie would take his knife, cut our first watermelon, hand us both a big piece and sit down next to us. Then we’d bury our faces in watermelon, eating only the heart—the reddest, juiciest, firmest, sweetest, most seed-free part—and throw away the rest.
Bernie was my father’s idea of a rich man. I always thought it was because he was such a successful businessman. Years later, I realized that it was not Bernie’s wealth itself but his way of dealing with it that my father liked. Bernie knew how to stop working, get together with friends and eat only the heart of the watermelon.
What I learned from Bernie is that being rich is a state of mind. Some of us, no matter how much money we have, will never be free enough to eat only the heart of the watermelon. If you don’t take the time to dangle your feet over the dock and enjoy life’s small pleasure, your work is probably hurting your life.
For many years, I forgot that lesson I’d learned as a kid on the dock. I was too busy making all the money I could. Well, I’ve relearned it. I hope I have time left to enjoy the success of others and to take pleasure in the day. That’s the heart of the watermelon. I have learned again to throw the rest away. 41. We learned from the second paragraph that the writer and his father were feeling worried.
3
42. The writer and his father ate the watermelon in a polite way.
43. In the eyes of the writer’s father, Bernie was just a rich businessman.
44. The underlined part “the heart of the watermelon” in the last paragraph refers to the writer’s hope of enjoying life.
45. We can know from the passage that one should learn to enjoy life’s small pleasure.
第二节:阅读B、C、D三部分内容,从各小题所给的四个选项中选出能回答所提问题或完成所给句子的一个最佳答案 (共10小题,计15分)

It seems very natural that if you have two dollars and add two dollars to them, you have four dollars. But do you know it took man millions of years to be able to think this way? In fact , one of the most difficult things to teach children is the idea of numbers.
In ancient times , when a man wanted to tell how many animals he owned, he had no system(体系)of numbers to use. He put a stone or pebble into a bag for each animal. The more animals, the more
stones or pebbles he had. It may explain why the word “calculate” comes from the Latin word “calculus” which means “stone”.
Later on, man used tally marks to count. People would just scratch(划下)a line or tally mark(计数符号) for each object they wanted to count, but they had no word to tell the number.
The next step in the development of the number system was probably to use fingers. Again we have a word that goes back to this. The word “digit” comes form the Latin word “digitus”. It means “fingers”! And the fact that we have 10 fingers led to the general use of 10 in the system of numbers.
The number system we use today was invented by the Hindus in India thousands of the years ago and was brought to Europe during 8th to 11th century by Arab traders. In this system all numbers are written with the nine digits 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and zero. It is decimal system(十进制), that is, it is built on the base of 10.
46. Man first used for counting. A. trees B. stones or pebbles C. fingers D. coins
47. If A and B each scratched three lines for their own objects to be counted, they would probably have objects in all.
A. three B. six C. nine D. five 48. invented the number system we use today.
A. The Hindus in India B. Europeans C. Arab traders D. French

“My dear dad, where are we going?” This has become the most popular question recently. It’s a line from the theme song of Hunan TV station’s reality show Where Are We Going, Dad?
“All my classmates are big fans,” said Ning Yun, 14, from Guangxi. “On Friday, we remind each other: don’t forget to watch it tonight!”
In the show, five pairs of fathers and kids go to strange places and finish interesting tasks. It’s also about growing up. Clumsy fathers learn to cook and comfort their kids. The kids learn about teamwork and being independent. In the show, 4-year-old Kimi finds it hard to finish his work alone. “When I saw Kimi looking for his dad, I burst into tears,” said Chen Yufang, 13, from Guangxi. “It reminded me of my first night at the school dormitory(宿舍). I really felt the pain of growing up that night.”
When people see the fathers trying to help their kids, it also hits a soft spot in their hearts. Tian Xiaofeng, 14, from Jiangsu, said his father is like Guo Tao in the program. “He is strict. And I was sad about it,” he said. But now he sees it in
4
a different way. “Guo Tao’s son looks strong-minded. I think his parenting style works. And I guess my father just wants me to be like that,” he said.

Most of the Chinese people live around here. People there can get plenty of water for farming. In the northern part, they mostly grow wheat, and in the southern part, they mostly grow rice.
Northeastern China has lots of forests and in the forests there are even reindeer(驯鹿), and tiger. In the very southern part of China, it’s hot and wet in summer. Even in winter, it never really gets cold. 53. “The roof of the world” belongs to ____.
