Passage One

Like most people, I was brought up to look upon life as a process of getting. It was not until in my late thirties that I made this important discovery: giving-away makes life so much more exciting. One discovery I made about giving-away is that it is almost impossible to give away anything in this world without getting something back, though the return often comes in an unexpected form. One Sunday morning the local post office delivered an important special delivery letter to my home, though it was addressed to me at my office. I wrote the postmaster a note of appreciation. More than a year later I needed a post-office box for a new business I was starting. I was told at the window that there were no boxes left, and that my name would have to go on a long waiting list. As I was about to leave, the postmaster appeared in the doorway. He had overheard our conversation. “Wasn’t it you that wrote us that letter a year ago about delivering a special delivery to your home” I said yes. “Well, you certainly are

going to have a box in this post office if we have to make one for you. You don’t know what a letter like that means to us. We usually get nothing but complaints.”

31. At first the author looked upon life as a process of getting. He formed his view of life because_______.

A. other people were selfish

B. he thought it exciting to get from others

C. of his early education D. of his character

32. The author wrote a note of appreciation to the post office because________. A. he knew what such a note would mean to the post office. B. he had discovered giving-away made life more exciting C. he believed he would get something back by doing so D. the postman delivered an important letter in time 33. The post master promised___________. A. to make a new post office box for the author B. to let the author have a post office box C. to include the author’s name on the list D. to deliver the author’s mail to his home

34. The post master interfered because________. A. he overheard their conversation

B. he had received a lot of complaints for lack of boxes C. he was thankful for the letter the author had written D. he was proud of their good service Passage Two

Trees are useful to man in three important ways: they provide him with wood and other products; they give him shade; and they help to prevent droughts and floods.

Unfortunately, in many parts of the world, man has not realized that the third of these services is the most important. In his eagerness to make money from trees, he has cut them down in large numbers, only to find that without them he has lost the best friends he had. And besides, he is usually too careless to plant and look after new trees. So the forests slowly disappear.

This does not only mean that man will have fewer trees. The results are even more serious: for where there are trees, their roots break up soil---allowing the rain to sink in ---and also bind the soil, thus preventing it from being washed away easily; but where there are no trees, the rain falls on hard ground and flows away, causing floods and carrying away the rich top-soil. When all the top-soil is gone, nothing remains but worthless desert.

Two thousand years ago a rich and powerful country cut down its trees to build warships, with which to gain itself an empire. It set up the empire but, without its trees, its soil became poor and it grew weak. When the empire fell to pieces, the home country found itself faced with floods and starvation.

35. What is the most important service of trees to man according to the passage A. They help him make money.

B. They give him wood and other products. C. They help him prevent droughts and floods. D. They give him shade.

36. Why do forests in many parts of the world slowly disappear A. New trees are not looked after properly. B. Many trees have been cut down by man.

C. Man has not paid enough attention to planting trees. D. All of the above.

37. Why did the country mentioned in the passage suffer from floods and starvation
