Shakespeare, more perhaps than any other writer, made full use of the greatest resources of the English language. Most of us use about five thousand words in our normal employment of English;Shakespeare in his works used about twenty-five thousand! There is probably no better way for a foreigner to appreciate the richness and variety of the English language than by studying the various ways in which Shakespeare uses it.Such a study is well worth the effort, even though some aspects of English usage, and the meaning of many words, have changed since Shakespeare’s day.

However,it is surprising that we should know comparatively little about the life of the greatest English author. We know that Shakespeare was born in 1564 in Stratford-on-Avon,and that he died there in 1616.He almost certainly attended the Grammar School in the town, but of this we cannot be sure.We know he was married there in 1582 to Anne Hathaway and that he had three children. We know that he spent much of his life in London writing his masterpieces. But this is almost all that we do know.

However, what is important about Shakespeare’s life is not its incidental details but its products, the plays and the poems. For many years scholars have been trying to add a few facts about Shakespeare’s life to the small number we already possess and for an equally long time critics have been theorizing about the plays.Sometimes, indeed,it seems that the poetry of Shakespeare will disappear under the great mass of comment that has been written upon it.

Fortunately this is not likely to happen.Shakespeare’s people have long delighted not just the English but lovers of literature everywhere, and will continue to do so after the scholars and critics

and all their works have been forgotten. 4.What is the passage mainly about?

A.The great influence of the English language. B.The great varieties in writing styles.

C.The richness of the content in Shakespeare’s works. D.The rich English language used by Shakespeare in his works. 答案:D

A.not all the comment on Shakespeare’s works have produced good effects B.scholars have successfully collected facts about Shakespeare’s life C.critics are more interested in Shakespeare’s plays than his poetry D.the details of Shakespeare’s life are more important than his literary works 答案:A

解析:推理判断题。根据第三段最后一句话可推断出A项正确。 6.From the last sentence in the third paragraph we can learn that . A.people don’t think well of the poetry of Shakespeare any more

B.people pay more attention to the comment than the poetry of Shakespeare C.people can’t read the poetry of Shakespeare any more D.the comment is followed by the poetry of Shakespeare 答案:B

解析:细节理解题。根据本句中的“disappear”可推断出B项正确。 7.The underlined part in the last paragraph refers to . A.the characters in Shakespeare’s products B.Shakespeare

C.the people living in Shakespeare’s day D.the readers of Shakespeare’s works 答案:A

解析:词义猜测题。最后一段第二句话意为“莎士比亚剧中的人物长久以来不仅使英国人还使各地的文学爱好者得到了愉悦……”。其中的“Shakespeare’s people”指的是莎士比亚作品中的人物。

If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong.Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?

According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brainpower.Researchers found that learning other languages changes gray matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that

exercise builds muscles.

The study also found the earlier people learn a second language, the greater the effect is. A team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five,as well as a number of later learners.

Scans showed that gray matter density(密度)in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference was.

“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.

Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills.“Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible(灵活的),” he said.“You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”

The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of 2 and 34.Reading,writing,and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better.“Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists. 8.In the second paragraph, the writer mentions “exercise” in order to . A.say language is also a kind of physical labour

B.prove that one needs more practice when he/she is learning a language C.show the importance of using the language when you learn the language D.make people believe language learning helps gray matter work well 答案:D

解析:推理判断题。作者把语言学习对大脑的促进作用比作体育锻炼对肌肉强健的促进作用,意在说明语言学习对大脑有类似的促进作用。

9.The underlined word “bilinguals” probably means . A.a researcher on language learning B.a second language learner

C.a person who can speak two languages D.an active language learner 答案:C

解析:词义猜测题。从“early bilinguals”的定语从句“who had learnt a second language before the age of five” 可知bilingual与C项意思接近。 10.We may know from the scientific findings that .

A.the earlier you start to learn a second language, the higher the gray matter density is

B.there is no difference between a later second language learner and one who doesn’t know a second language

C.the experience of learning a second language has bad effect on people’s brain

D.the ability of learning a second language is changing all the time 答案:A

解析:推理判断题。根据第五段 “Scans showed that gray matter density(密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference was.”可知答案。 11.The main subject talked about in this passage is . A.science on learning a second language B.man’s ability of learning a second language C.language can help brain power D.language learning and maths study 答案:C

解析:主旨大意题。本文的第一段即是本文的主题,然后下文围绕这一主题进行了深入的阐述,即“语言学习可以提高你的智力”。

Listening may be the key social skill. But humans have probably been bad listeners since Adam and Eve ignored God’s words and ate the forbidden fruit. Now many experts believe that the digital era of endless stimuli(刺激) has made things worse.“The average human attention span in 2000 was 12 seconds, but by 2013 it was only 8 seconds(one second shorter than a goldfish!)”concluded Microsoft Canada, after doing research on 2,000 Canadians.

I have studied good listeners—including spies, doctors and reporters—and tried to work out how they do it.The first step is to throw away the preconception(偏见) that the person you’re talking to is boring and predictable. Most people do have something worth saying,if only you can help them say it.

The second step is,therefore,to shut up.You may be aching to dive in and interrupt the speaker with a brilliant insight or joke, but don’t bother. He doesn’t want to listen to you either. Most people are not particularly interested in your opinions or what you have to say,but very interested in voicing their own opinions.Let them tell it.Make an occasional encouraging remark.Let silences fall, because people will often pour things out just to fill them.

When people are listened to,they can come out with the most amazing things. If someone tells you something like,“I’m thinking of murdering my husband,”show no surprise, just nod understandingly and think of their trust in you.Never do as the Woody Allen character in the movie Crimes and Misdemeanors who listened to his weeping sister talking about her terrible date.He covers his eyes and shouts,“Oh,oh,oh!That’s so awful. My God,that’s the worst thing I ever heard in my life...Barbara,you idiot!”

Good listeners ask questions, but not too many.Journalists know that the best moment in the interview often comes when you put away your pen and say,“Thank you so much for your time.”Then the interviewee—freed from your series of questions—tells you the thing she had been wanting to say all along.
