A new study shows students who write notes by hand during lectures perform better on exams than those who use laptops.
Students are increasingly using laptops for note-taking because of speed and legib ility(清晰度).But the research has found laptop users are less able to remember and apply the concepts they have been taught.
Researchers performed experiments that aimed to find out whether using a laptop increased the tendency to make notes\. In the first experiment, students were given either a laptop or pen and paper. They listened to the same lectures and were told to use their usual note-taking skills.Thirty minutes after the talk, they were examined on their ability to remember facts and on how well they understood concepts.
The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many notes as those who wrote by hand. However, the typists performed worse at remembering and applying the concepts. Both groups scored similarly when it came to memorizing facts.
The researcher's report said,\,if the notes are taken mindlessly,as is more likely the case on a laptop, the benefit disappears.\
In another experiment aimed at testing long-term memory, students took notes as before but were tested a week after the lecture. This time, the students who wrote notes by hand performed significantly better on the exam.
These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate learning and understanding, but that they also lead to superior revision in the future. 1. More and more students favor laptops for note-taking because they can ______ .
A. write more notes C. get higher scores B. digest concepts better D. understand lectures better
D. tireless.
2. While taking notes, laptop users tend to be ______ .
A. skillful. B. mindless. C. thoughtful. 3. The author of the passage aims to ______ .
A. examine the importance of long-term memory B. stress the benefit of taking notes by hand C. explain the process of taking notes D. promote the use of lap tops
4. The passage is likely to appear in ______ .
A. a newspaper advertisement C. a science magazine B. a computer textbook D. a finance report

In ancient Egypt, a shopkeeper discovered that he could attract customers to his shop simply by making changes to its environment. Modern businesses have been following his lead, with more tactics(策略).
One tactic involves where to display the goods. For example, stores place fruits and
第1页,共14页
vegetables in the first section. They know that customers who buy the healthy food first will feel happy so that they will buy more junk food later in their trip. In department stores, the women's shoe section is generally next to the women's makeup section: while the shop
assistant is going back to find the right size shoe, bored customers are likely to wander over and find some cosmetics they might want to try later. Besides, businesses seek to appeal to customers' senses. Stores notice that the smell of baked goods encourages shopping, so they make their own bread each morning and then fan the bread smell into the store throughout the day. Music sells goods, too. Researchers in Britain found that when French music was played, sales of French wines went up.
When it comes to the selling of houses, businesses also use highly rewarding tactics. They find that customers make decisions in the first few seconds upon walking in the door, and turn it into a business opportunity. A California builder designed the structure of its houses smartly. When entering the house, the customer would see the Pacific Ocean through the windows, and then the pool through an open stairway leading to the lower level. The instant view of water on both levels helped sell these $10 million houses.
5. Why do stores usually display fruits and vegetables in the first section? ______
A. To save customers times.
B. To show they are high quality foods. C. To help sell junk food.
D. To sell them at discount prices.
6. According to Paragraph 3, which of the following encourages customers to buy?
______
A. Opening the store early in the morning.
B. Displaying British wines next to French ones. C. Inviting customers to play music.
D. Filling the store with the smell of fresh bread.
7. What is the California builder's story intended to prove? ______
A. The house structure is a key factor customers consider. B. The more costly the house is, the better it sells. C. An ocean view is much to the customers' taste. D. A good first impression increases sales.
8. What is the main purpose of the passage? ______
A. To explain how businesses turn people into their customers. B. To introduce how businesses have grown from the past. C. To report researches on customer behavior. D. To show dishonest business practices

It was December 25, 1914, only 5 months into World War I. German, British, and French soldiers, already sick and tired of the senseless killing, disobeyed their superiors and started socializing with \.
German troops held up Christmas trees with signs, \. Thousands of troops ran across the battlefields covered with dead bodies. They sang Christmas songs, exchanged photographs of loved ones back home, shared food and even played football. Soldiers hugged men they had been trying to kill a few short hours before. They agreed to warn each other if their officers forced them to fire their weapons, and to aim high.
Fear ran through the military leaders on both sides. They felt that their power was being challenged: soldiers declaring their brotherhood with each other and refusing to

fight. Generals declared this unexpected peacemaking illegal and said that participating soldiers would face a military court. Those found guilty would be imprisoned or even
shot. By March 1915 the socializing movement had been destroyed and the killing machine was back in full operation. Over the next three years more than fifteen million people died in the war.

It is like hearing that our deepest wishes really are true: the world really can be different. 9. The soldiers began socializing with the enemy because ______ .

from (2) (evident) in the sleep center and that of many other scientists that naps can give you benefits for both your brain (3) your body.
