Lead in:What do you know about Confucius?

Presentation: Confucius (about 551-479BC) was a Chinese thinker and social philosopher of the Spring and Autumn Period. He was also known as Zhong Ni (仲尼). He was born in the village of Zou in the country of Lu.

In the Lun Yu, we can read shorts analects about the Sage's lives and his discussions with his disciples (弟子). This is maybe the first human scripture (手稿)giving someone's detailed and realistic portrait. 《论语》摘录 知之者不如好之者, 好之者不如乐之者。 学而时习之,不亦乐乎。 学而不思,则罔; 思而不学,则殆。 敏而好学,不耻下问。

He was considered the greatest playwright in the world and the finest poet who has written in the English language.

Watch the piece of video. It's from a famous film. Do you know its name? Do you know who wrote it?

Mark Twain(l835~1910)

He was the US critical realism literature founder, world renowned short story master. Teacher show the famous works of Mark Twain:

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer 《汤姆·索亚历险记》

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn 《哈克贝利·费恩历险记》

Life on the Mississippi 《密西西比河上的生活》 Running for Governor 《竞选州长》 Step 3 Practice

1.Work in pairs. Look at the pictures. Say who the people are and why they are famous.(p17) Listen to the recording and check your answers. 2.Listen again and complete the sentences.

3.Try to match the people with the description True or false

1. Both Betty and Mr Jackson think that Confucius and Shakespeare are great writers. 2. Confucius and Shakespeare lived hundreds of years ago, so people are influenced little by them now.

3. Mr Jackson thinks Mark Twain is as great as Confucius.

4. Betty wants Mr Jackson to join the Internet group to discuss great books. 4. 1. What's up? 怎么了?

What's up? = What's happening?/ What's the matter?

What's up? 是非正式用语,意思是“怎么了/出了什么事?”如: What's up? Why is the baby crying? 怎么了?为什么婴儿在哭?

2. But I think I'd describe Confucius more as a teacher and thinker than a writer. 但是我更愿意把孔子描述成一位教育家和思想家,而非作家。 describe…as…意思是“把……描述为……”。如: 手术后,她的状况可以说还算稳定。

After the operation, her condition was described as stable.

more…than…在本句中表示“与其说是……不如说是……”。如: 成功来自努力,而非好运。

Success is more hard work than good luck.

3. …and Shakespeare's plays also make a lot of sense to us today. 莎士比亚的戏剧现在对于我们来说也仍然很有意义。 make sense的意思是“易理解;合情理;有意义”。例如: Why did she do such a thing? It does not seem to make sense. 她为什么做这样的事?似乎没有道理。

4. …but I suppose he isn't as well-known as Confucius or Shakespeare. ……但我觉得他不像孔子和莎士比亚那么有名。 suppose常见用法:

(1) suppose + 宾语 + 宾语补足语 We all suppose him clever. 我们所有的人都认为他很聪明。

What makes you suppose him to be connected with him? 你怎么会认为他与他有联系呢?

(2) suppose + that从句,表示“猜测,认为”。若从句是否定意义,用法同think和believe,应将否定前移到主句中去。如: I don't suppose he will agree. 我想他不会同意的。

Stress 重读

英语句子一般由多个单词构成,这些单词的重读一般遵循以下规律:名词、形容词、数词、动词、副词、代词和表达强烈思想感情的感叹词需要重读;人称代词、连词、冠词、介词、以及少数系动词和助动词等主要起语法作用的单词一般不重读(当然有少数例外)。 5. Listen and underline the words the speaker stresses.
