Grandma took Abby fishing at the lake. Abby swung her fishing pole, but her line didn’t drop into the water. “Where did it go?” Abby asked.

Grandma pointed to a tree. “If you want to catch dinner for us,” Grandma said, “you have to get your line in the lake first.”

Grandma took hook from the tree. Abby swung her fishing pole again. She smiled when her hook hit the water.

“I caught a fish!” shouted Abby. She reeled in her line, but her hook was full of grass.

Late in the summer, Addy and her father heard a song in the trees. “Listen!” said Daddy. “Cicadas!”

When Addy woke the next morning, she ran outside to check her cicada. An empty shell was hanging in the place she had stared at for so long.

The school bus had arrived. Taj’s mother handed him a paper bag of warm samosas. This was his favorite food from his home in India. Taj kissed his mother goodbye and headed off to school.
