If you want to become a better reader, what should you know about the speed of reading? Some people read very quickly, while others read very slowly. But which one is better?

The quick reader may be a good reader when he reads a storybook for fun. But he may not be able to slow down enough to read directions carefully. He may read so quickly that he does not take time to understand fully the ideas and information which are important to remember.

The slow reader may be a good reader when he reads directions for making something. But he may spend too much time in reading a simple story which is meant to be enjoyed but is not important enough to be remembered.

So, you see, either a quick reader or a slow reader is not really a good one. If you wish to become a better reader, here are four important things to remember about the speed of reading.

①Knowing why you are reading will often help you to know whether to read quickly or slowly. ②Some things should be read slowly throughout. Examples are directions for making or doing something, science and history books, and math problems. You must read such things slowly or remember each important step and understand each important idea.

③Some things should be read quickly throughout. Examples are simple stories for enjoyment, letters from friends and bits of news from hometown papers.

④In some of your reading, you must change your speed from fast to slow and slow to fast, as you go along. You will need to read certain pages quickly and then slow down and do more careful reading when you come to important ideas.

19. What should be read quickly according to the passage?

A. Directions for making something. B. Math problems. C. Science and history books. D. Storybooks, newspapers, personal letters, etc. 20. What is the important thing you should keep in mind about speed of reading?

The Songkran Festival is traditional Thai New Year’s Day and is celebrated from April 13 to April 15. It is also called the “Water Festival” because people believe that water will wash away bad luck. Also, this festival is for rain because it is held in the hottest season.

In the past, on this day, people threw small drops of water on monks ( 僧 人 ) and old people to bless them. Nowadays, besides the old tradition, people also throw water on whoever walks past their houses or walks down the street. Everyone gets wet, but it is all in a spirit of friendliness, blessing and fun—even among people who usually have great disagreements. People who get wet actually do not get angry because they know that it is a tradition.

On this day, everywhere in Thailand, people celebrate and enjoy the festival. People will carry water to the temples to soak the stone figures (石像), using brushes. They also give very good food to the monks. Chiang Mai Province, which is in the northern part of Thailand, is especially lively, and animals and birds are often set free from their cages.

Volunteers can stay in Bangkok( 曼 谷 ) for the celebrations or travel to smaller communities to take part in local activities. What’s more, people can enjoy public events, such as beauty contests and marching bands during this festival which ends on April 15. Jordan Romero, a 13-year-old American boy became the youngest climber to reach the top of Mount Qomolangma on Saturday.

The eighth grader with long curly hair from California said that he first came up with the idea to climb the highest peaks on all seven continents(大洲) four years ago.

The former record for climbers to climb Mount Qomolangma had been held by Temba Tsheri of Napal(尼泊尔) who reached the peak at the age of 16. Jordan’s climbing team reached the top hours earlier than expected. After they reached, they all hugged each other, saying, “I love you. I can’t believe we’re finally here.” and started crying.

Jordan, from Big Bear, California, was climbing Qomolangma with his father, his father’s friend and three guides. He left for the peak from the base camp on the Chinese side.

Unlike neighboring Nepal, the other way to Qomolangma, China has no age limit for climbers. On the top, Jordan left behind his lucky rabbit’s foot and planted some seeds for good luck on his journey. Then he took the satellite phone and called his mom on the top of the world’s highest mountain, 29,035 feet(8,850 meters)above sea level.

Jordan said he hoped to climb the final top of the mountain in Antarctic(南极洲)by December or January. With this dream nearly finished, he already has his eyes on the next goal, that is, he plans to climb the highest peaks in all 50 US states. 27. When Jordan Remero was nine years old, he wanted to .
