A budget(预算)is a spending plan. It can help you spend money wisely. It can do this by cutting out wasteful spending. Of course, preparing a budget takes planning, and following a budget takes willpower(自制力). Your budget should meet your family’s needs and income.

The first step in creating a budget is to set your goals. What does your family needand want? You must know all that to work out the details of the budget. Never spend more than you can. Then decide which goals are the most important.

The next step is estimating(估计)family income. Before you can plan wisely, you need to know how much money you have to spend! Write down aqll themoney you expect to receive(wages, saving, interest, etc.) during the planned budget period.

Passage Two

In the last 500 years nothing about people-not their clothes, ideas, or languages has changed as much as what they eat. Chocolate (巧克力) drink was first made from the seeds of the cacao (可可) tree by South American Indians. The Spanish introduced it to the rest of the world during the 1500s. And although it was very expensive, it quickly became popular, In London, shops where chocolate drinks were served became important places. Some still exist today.

The potato is also from the New World. Around 1600, the Spanish brought it from Peru to Europe, where it soon was widely grown. Ireland became so dependent on it that thousands of Irish people starved (挨饿) when the crop failed during the Potato Famine (饥荒)of 1845-1846, and thousands more were forced to leave their homeland and move to America.

There are many other foods that have traveled from South America to the Old World. But some others went in the opposite direction. Brazil is now the world's largest grower of coffee which is an important crop in other South American countries. But it is native to Ethiopia. It was first made into a drink by Arabs during the 1400s.
