A Critical Book Review on Jane Eyre Jane Eyre

By Charlotte Bronte

Publisher: Central Compilation & Translation Press Publish time: October 2002 ISBN: 7-204-06573-5/I 1156

I read Jane Eyre recently, and the short and isolated little girl impressed me a lot. At first I felt very sorry about her tragic experience, but gradually I was admired by her independence and strong determination. I quite admire author’ writing techniques and I think I have got a lot of benefits from this book.

Jane Eyre was written by Charlotte Bronte, the eldest of the three Bronte sisters whose novels have become enduring classics of English literature. She is one of the most famous

novelists in the 19th century. And it is said that Jane Eyre is Charlotte Bronte’s poetic biography. This story is set in England in 19th century. When the novel begins, Jane is an isolated ten-year-old girl living with her aunt and cousins who dislike her. As a result, she is always bullied by her cousin and scolded by her aunt. The story goes on with her experience in a cruel charity

school called Lowood, where she suffers coldness and witnesses the death of her friend. One the other side, she gained knowledge as she always wants. During the eight years in Lowood, she distinguishes herself because of her hard work and abilities in teaching kids. Then she decided to leave and seeks another job. She became a governess in Thornfield where she meets her future husband. Life in the Thornfield is full of joy and she has a really happy time with . They overcome many difficulties, but on their wedding day, is proved to be a married man. In facing this

situation Jane leaves him. As the novel progresses, she came to Marsh End. There she regains her spiritual focus and discovers her strength when she rejects ’s marriage proposal. By the end of the novel, Jane came back to Thornfield and found ’s wife sets a fire before she is dead. is

disabled. Jane decided to stay and takes her responsibility to look after him. In the end they get married and live a happy life.

What is special of Jane Eyre is the strong appeal. is an enthusiastic and courageous person. It seems that nothing can stop him from courting Jane. Although the heroine, Jane is short and fragile, she is independent and always holds her own judgment. She is brave enough to say no to anyone. They express their passion with poetic words. In fact, their conversations read just like poetry, because they’re so romantic, moving and charming. Charlotte described fiery zeal and sincere heart vividly in this novel. Maybe it is why Jane Eyre can attract tens of thousands of readers after so many years.

Another reason why this novel is so impressing is that Charlotte uses first person narration in her novel as a result, the story is more closed to life and character’s emotion is enhanced. What’s more, psychological description is used expensively. Through Jane’s mental activities, we can feel her self-respect and strong longing for love and equality. To show the character’s inner world, Charlotte creates many detailed scenes. She takes advantage of dreamworld, delusion and premonition to build atmosphere. For example, when Jane is in her aunt’s home, she sees “the strange little figure there gazing at me, with a white face and arms specking the gloom, and glittering eyes of fear moving where all else was still, had the effect of a real spirit.”(Chapter2 P13) Among so many descriptions in the novel, you can hardly find a similar one. Charlotte’s rich imagination, vast vocabulary and language proficiency are so admirable.

In this novel, Charlotte revealed her view towards love and created a positive image of women for us. Jane stands for independent ladies. No matter how bad the situation is, she never betrays her thoughts and always follows her heart. Life is changing but our living principles remain.

Firmly persisting for the rights of being independent can give us enough confidence and courage. Jane gives us a good example. Her life is tough and full of hardship, but she never gives up what she wants. Charlotte provides us an impressive love story with fantastic description of natural environment. This graceful, touching and a little mystical novel is really worth reading!
