As is known, after Russia and the US,China has managed to make seeds of some vegetables and crops travel to space. India hopes to carry out agricultural research in space in a few years.

Since 1987,China has sent about 1,000 species of seeds into space. These include green peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers (黄瓜),carrots, lettuce and wheat. Even on China’s first manned spacecraft Shenzhou Ⅴ,there were some seeds from Taiwan. “Conditions in outer space such as radiation and low gravity can cause big changes in the seeds,”said Chinese researcher Jin Xing. But not all seeds are better after going to space. After returning to Earth, the best seeds are selected. These seeds produce much more and also grow faster than normal seeds. As the safety of genetically modified food(转基因食品) is still being debated, some people doubt the safety of these“space vegetables”because some of their genes are changed during the trip to space.

But Jin holds a more positive view. He said,“ Unlike genetically modified crops, no new genes are introduced to the space vegetables, so they are definitely safe.”China has also been

co-operating with NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) to grow some super size potatoes on the International Space Station. Special growth rooms use computers to control the light, temperature and humidity (湿度).Using this technology a new, virus-free potato can be produced every 40 to 50 days instead of the previous yearly crop.

36.How many countries have carried out agricultural research in space up to the present? A.1. B.2. C.3. D.4. 37.Once seeds of some vegetables and crops are sent into space and back, .

A.all of them don’t produce bigger crops

B.they are all better than before going to space C.small changes are caused in the seeds because of radiation and low gravity

D.they produce much more and grow faster than normal seeds

38.Jin has no doubt about the safety of the space vegetables because .

A.the seeds sent to space are all the same as those of genetically modified food

B.the seeds sent to space are the best

C.no new genes are brought in them unlike genetically modified food

D.the space vegetables have already planted in special growth rooms 39.Which statement is true?

A.Genetically modified food is not safe.

B.The space vegetables don’t belong to genetically modified food to some extent.

C.About 1,000 species of seeds were sent into space on Shenzhou Ⅴ.

D.Seeds back from space must be planted in special growth rooms controlled by computers. 40.The main purpose of the text is to . A.tell us seeds of some vegetables and crops travelled to space

B.discuss the competition between the US and China

C.explain how to select better seeds

D.show the readers the new agricultural research in space

In America and Europe, most people accept crustaceans(甲壳纲动物) such as crab, lobster, and shrimp as food items. In fact, diners often view these foods as special, tending to pay far more for them than for chicken, pork and most beef, or serving them on special occasions. Yet crustaceans are” the ocean equivalent(相等的东西)of insects,” says David Gracer, a dietician. In fact, crustaceans belong to the same part of the animal family tree as insects do.

When people argue that eating larvae (幼体)is disgusting, Gracer points out that lobsters tend to” eat rubbish and dead things”. And insects? Most of them dine at nature’s salad bars. Knowing that, he asks,” Which would you rather eat?”

Gracer holds workshops on edible(可食用的)insects. He also performs cooking demonstrations to introduce Americans to insect-based recipes. He’s even started a company in Providence, R.I.,called Sunrise Land Shrimp. It supplies frozen and dried insects to consumers.

Besides pointing out that insects are good food, Gracer also argues that insects can be “a better choice” than most meats—at least ecologically.

It takes a lot of natural resources—land, water, feed and energy—to create a pound of beef or chicken. Those resources are not only expensive, but also can be damaged or polluted. By contrast, insects can be grown on low-quality plants—even weeds, sometimes—and often use little water.

The environmental resources connected with bringing every pound of insect protein to market, therefore, are far fewer than for an equivalent amount of regular meat.

41.The underlined word “them” in the first para- graph refers to “ ”. A.pork and beef B.insects C.salad bars D.crustaceans

42.In the opinion of David Gracer, people should .

A.know crustaceans are as common as insects B.pay more for nutritious crustaceans

C.provide guests with special expensive seafood D.treat crustaceans as special seafood

43.Eating insects is a better choice because insects .

A.can be raised in large quantity by humans

B.can protect environment from being destroyed C.need far fewer environmental resources D.only feed on weeds and drink little water 44.What would be the best title for the passage? A.How to Raise Insects for Food B.Where to Eat Insects

C.What Nutrition Insects Contain D.Why not Eat Insects

45.In which column of a magazine would the passage probably be found? A.Environment. B.Food and Nutrition. C.Chemistry and Material. D.Animals.

When you learn reading, math, and other subjects taught in school from your parents or teachers who come to your house, it’s called homeschooling. A kid may be the only one, or he or she may be taught with brothers, sisters, or kids from the neighborhood.

Parents choose to homeschool their children for many different reasons. Sometimes a kid is sick and can’t go to the regular school. But more often, kids are homeschooled because their parents feel they can give their children a better education than the local school can. Parents may also choose homeschooling because they want their children’s education to include religious(宗教的)instruction, which isn’t offered at public schools.

If you don’t like school, homeschooling might seem like the perfect solution. But it’s better for everyone if homeschooling isn’t chosen just as an escape from school or problems there. Finding solutions to the problem should be the first step.

Kids who are homeschooled may benefit from the one-on-one attention. For instance, if you don’t understand something in math, the whole class won’t be moving on without you. You might be the whole class! It’s also possible that you might learn more than you would in a regular classroom, because if you really excel at something, you can keep learning more at your own pace.

Kids who are homeschooled may also get out in their communities more than other kids. They may get to experience hands-on education at museums,

libraries, businesses and other community resources. They also might volunteer or take part in “service learning” where they take on local projects.

No matter where a child goes to school, the key to learning is listening to the teacher and asking for help when he/she needs it. A homeschooled child might feel more comfortable with his or her teacher (a parent),but the child still needs to pay attention to cooperate(合作).Just like in a traditional school, teachers and students need to work together to achieve goals in the classroom. 46.The underlined words in Paragraph 4 can be replaced by “ ”. A.hate B.are good at C.like D.agree on 47.The passage mainly tells us .

A.what homeschooling is and how it works

B.the advantages and disadvantages of homeschooling C.every kid should be taught at home

D.homeschooled kids should go out to do volunteer work

48.What does the author think of homeschooling? A.It is not a good way to get educated.

B.It is only good for the kids who can’t go to school. C.It can offer kids what suits their needs. D.It shouldn’t be encouraged.

49.The similarity of homeschooling and learning at school is that . A.students all have many classmates B.students don’t feel lonely

C.students all should cooperate with their teachers D.students all have more opportunities to get out 50.Which of the following should NOT belong to the reasons why kids get homeschooled?

A.They escape from school because they hate going to school.

B.They can’t go to school because of their bad health.

C.They can learn something that is not taught in school.

D.They can get more benefits.

From the first use of the rocket to carry satellites into space to the setting up of space stations, human beings have been putting great effort into space research. And so far, we have

achieved many successes. But there are still numerous tasks in front of the US and we should not cease trying to progress.

The international space station is an important step we should take in space exploration. It is not only helpful but also essential. It provides a proper space environment for many experiments that we have wanted to do for a long time. It is also a base for the observations of the earth and the universe. It could also be an important base for later travel to the moon and Mars.

In a word, if we want to explore space more, the first thing we should do is to set up a space station. As the space station costs a lot of money, it is hard for one country alone to establish one. The USA seems to be the only country that has the ability to build a space station alone, and it has tried to do so, but not very successful. So it aggregated many other countries to work on it together. Though it is still extremely expensive, it is much cheaper than doing it alone. It is really a job that needs everyone’s effort and will benefit everyone.

But even so, the funds needed are still a big problem. As for the USA, it seems that it has too many things to spend its money on. Although it is the richest country in the world, it has much debt every year. It has to make arrangements about its finance, and try to find a balance in all these issues. 51.What is the author’s attitude towards building and developing the international space station? A.Supportive. B.Doubtful. C.Critical. D.Dissatisfied. 52.From Paragraph 3 we learn that . A.the dream of building the international space station is not realized now

B.many experiments have been done in the international space station

C.the international space station is necessary for people to explore space more

D.people have traveled to Mars from the international space station

53.Which of the following is NOT a reason for countries’ cooperation in building the international space station?

A.That it requires a lot of money. B.That it needs everyone’s effort.

C.That it will benefit every participating country. D.That it is too far away from the earth.

54.The underlined word “aggregated” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by “ ”. A.united B.scolded C.allowed D.forbade

55.Which of the following aspects about building the international space station is NOT mentioned in the passage? A.Difficulties. B.Cooperation. C.Significance. D.Specific arrangements. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Empathy

Last year, researchers from the University of Michigan reported that empathy, the ability to understand other people, among college students had dropped sharply over the past 10 years. 56 Today, people spend more time alone and are less likely to join groups and clubs.

Jennifer Freed, a co-director of a teen program, has another explanation. Turn on the TV, and you’re showered with news and reality shows full of people fighting, competing, and generally treating one another with no respect. 57

There are good reasons not to follow those bad examples. Humans are socially related by nature. 58 Researchers have also found that empathetic teenagers are more likely to have high self-respect. Besides, empathy can be a cure for loneliness, sadness, anxiety, and fear.

Empathy is also an indication of a good leader. In fact, Freed says, many top companies report that empathy is one of the most important things they look for in new managers. 59 “Academics are important. But if you don’t have emotional(情感的)intelligence, you won’t be as successful in work or in your love life,” she says.

What’s the best way to up your EQ(情商)?For starters, let down your guard and really listen to others. 60 To really develop empathy, you’d better volunteer at a nursing home or a hospital, join a club or a team that has a diverse membership, have a “sharing circle” with your family, or spend time
