Recently I went to the Tsavo National Park in northern Kenya for a film. We set off early for a distant waterhole. A huge elephant, covered with dry mud, drank calmly and deeply. He might have traveled 50 km to reach the water. He wasn’t going to hurry now. He’d drink a while and then rest in the shade, and then drink again-or so we thought. What actually happened was that he drank deeply and stepped away. Then he suddenly fell down. Within minutes he was dead.

We called animal doctor Jeremiah Poghon immediately. He removed the head of a poisoned arrow from the elephant’s body, and let out over 100 liters of pus(脓)-the result of the elephant’s meeting with a poacher(偷猎者) months before.

Today’s poacher shoots from a blind. He fires an arrow, covered with poison, into the body of an elephant. If the poacher is lucky, the elephant might die in an hour or two; if not, he might have to follow the elephant for days before it dies. Often the arrow head fails to kill the elephant at once-it doesn’t mean that the poison won’t finally kill the elephant, but it will be a slow death. Living in Tsavo through these times, I could see the results of poaching from time to time.

When I think about the death of that elephant, what stays with me is the extraordinary silence after the shocking sound of his body hitting the ground. I took some comfort from the knowledge that as the dead body returned to the soil, some animals would benefit-but I couldn’t escape the feeling that with the death of such a large animal, the world seemed a poorer and emptier place.

21. While filming near the waterhole, the author and his team __________.

A. knew the elephant was injured

B. found the elephant acted violently C. tired their best to save the elephant

D. thought the elephant was in good condition

22. Further examination showed that the dead elephant ______.

A. had suffered a lot B. had wounds all over it

C. had drunk some deadly water

D. had had a good fight with a poacher

23. How does the author feel when thinking about the elephant’s death?

A. Embarrassed. B. Funny. C. Upset. D. Relieved 24. Why did the author write the text?

A. To introduce African elephants. B. To show the cruelty of poaching. C. To describe his filming experience. D. To ask readers to protect wild animals.

More than four in 10 cancers-600,000 in the UK alone-could be prevented if people led healthier lives, say experts. The population of the UK is about 63,000,000.

Latest figures from Cancer Research UK show smoking is the biggest avoidable risk factor, followed by unhealthy diet. The charity advises people to live healthily, limit alcohol intake and do regular exercise.

According to the figures from 2011 to 2015, more than 300,000 cases of cancer recorded were linked to smoking. A further 145,000 were linked to unhealthy diets containing too much processed food. Obesity contributed to 88,000 cases and alcohol to 62,000. Sun damage to the skin and physical inactivity were also contributing factors.

Professor Max Parkin, a Cancer Research UK statistician, says: “ There’s now little doubt that certain lifestyle choices can have a big influence on cancer risk, with research around the world all pointing to the same key risk factors.

“Of course everyone wants to enjoy some extra treats during the Christmas holidays so we don’t want to ban beef pies and wine but it’s a good time to think about taking up some healthy habits for 2016.

“Leading a healthy lifestyle can’t guarantee someone won’t get cancer but we can stack the odds in our favor by taking positive steps.”

Public Health England says a healthy lifestyle can play an important role in reducing cancer risk. It says campaigns such Smokefree, Dry January and Change4Life Sugar Swaps all aim to raise public awareness. It’s important that we continue to make progress in noticing cancer earlier and improving treatments, but helping people understand how they can reduce their risk of developing cancer in the first place remains important in dealing with cancer. 25. Which of the following is the third biggest avoidable cancer factor?

A. Obesity. B. Alcohol intake.

C. Unhealthy diets. D. Physical inactivity. 26. According to Professor Max Parkin, ___________.

A. it’s OK to drink wine during festivals B. the causes of cancer are still unclear now C. unhealthy food should be completely banned

D. a healthy lifestyle will protect us from cancer

27. By saying the underlined words in Paragraph 6, Professor Max Parkin means we can __________.

A. help others B. improve our lives

C. discover cancer early D. decrease our cancer risk 28. What’s the main idea of the text?

A. Most cancers are caused by smoking.

B. Cancer is greatly linked to our lifestyle.

C. There are different factors that lead to cancer.

D. Public awareness should be raised to prevent cancer.

Some parents of elementary school students in America are receiving letters about their children’s weight. If a child is found to have a weight problem, his parents will get a letter from the school informing them that their child could be overweight.

And what do students call these notes? “Fat letters.”

Kids already have to put up with being frightened or hurt by other kids at school. Now they also have to protect themselves from insults from the adults who work in those schools?

Don’t they think that parents know whether their children are overweight? Do we really want to encourage a trend we already see: children going on diets? According to a study by Duke University, more than 40% of 9- and 10-year-old girls have gone on a diet.

In Massachusetts, state lawmakers are considering a bill that bans school from collecting student’s weight information.

Many public school educators actually consider themselves to be more enlightened(开明的) than the rest of us. That’s why they have spent so much time insisting that we must not label children over their academic performances. They had a point. Schools have been putting labels on students since before the invention of blackboards. Students who might have once been labeled “lazy” simply because “uninterested.” Immigrant students who were once considered “limited English proficient(熟练的)” became “English learners.”

My wife is a former teacher. She works with students who have difficulty in reading and spelling. The kinds of students she helps were once said to have a “learning disability.” We don’t say that anymore. Today, acknowledging that human beings process information in a variety of ways, we say that these kids have a “learning difference.”

There you go. Academically, the enlightened view nowadays is that all students are different, that their brains are all wired in unique ways, and that it’s wrong to try to assess them with a one-size-fits-all standard to determine who is intelligent and who isn’t. It is agreed that children’s brains come in all shapes and sizes.

So why not be really enlightened and learn to think the same way about children’s bodies? 32. The underlined word ‘insults’ in Paragraph 3 probably mean ________.

A. rude remarks B. unhealthy food C. dangerous actions D. unfair judgments

33. According to the text, what may happen if fat letters become popular?

A. Stopping children’s secrets from being revealed will become law. B. Parents will realize their children’s weight problem early. C. People will pay more and more attention to their weight. D. More and more children will eat less to get thinner. 34. The author mentions his wife’s work to ________.

A. prove learning disabilities don’t exist B. show the importance of teachers’ work

C. explain the meaning of learning differences D. suggest people differ widely in varied ways

35. What is the author’s attitude towards fat letters?

A. Uncaring. B. Disapproving. C. Doubtful. D. Respectful. 第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)

Sunstroke is a condition that develops when the body cannot control the temperature of the body. It occurs when the body is exposed to too much heat. 36 To avoid sunstroke, you can adopt simple yet important ways mentioned below:

Before you decide to step out of your house, think and judge whether you really need to go during the time when the atmosphere is hot. 37 If it is not almost a necessity, try to wear clothes which will cover the whole part of the body. However, they should not be warm clothes as they may increase your body temperature. It is quite good to wear cotton clothes as well as light-colored, loose-fitting, and lightweight clothes in summer for a comfortable stay when you go out of home. 38 Apply sunscreen on your skin to keep away the harmful rays of sun.

Lack of water normally triggers sunstroke. 39 You should drink at least 8 glasses of water each day to stay hydrated. In addition to that, eat more water-containing fruits like watermelon, grapes, mango and orange to keep your body hydrated during the summer days.

Avoid those beverages that contain caffeine(such as tea, coffee and soda) or alcohol. In particular, alcohol tends to dry up the body. So you must avoid drinking it if you are suffering from sunstroke.

40 Prolonged exposure to the sun causes sunstroke. When some basic symptoms of sunstroke become apparent like headache, dark yellow or orange urine, vomiting, weakness, heavy sweating then limit exposure to the sun. Calm yourself down and stay cool.

Try to do outdoor activities in the cooler times of the day(before 10:00 a.m. And after 6:p.m.) A. The main symptom of sunstroke according to medical science is a very high fever. B. It is often considered a life-threatening condition.
