On more than one occasion, consider doing sth. ; take one’s own life: On more than one occasion, she has considered taking her own life.
Switch to: He switched to computer programming.
Have aptitude for: He had little aptitude for programming. Get along with sb.: He doesn’t get along with his boss.
Have no choice but to do.: He has no choice but to stay on the job. Break up with sb.: His girlfriend broke up with him. Not get anywhere: He isn’t getting anywhere.
Book up; in advance: All the tickets were booked up months in advance. In silence: Most students suffer in silence. III. Difficult sentences
1. Going to college has always had its ups and downs, but today the “downs” of the college
experience are more numerous and difficult, a fact that the schools are responding to with increased support services. 这句中的fact指的是today the “downs” of the college experience are more numerous and difficult这个事实。
2. He rejected that idea, though, because he doesn’t want people to think there’s something
wrong with him. 这句中的though表示转折 “不过, 然而”, 不是表示让步的 “尽管”. 3. Of that group, almost half experience depression intense enough for professional help. 这句
话的主语可以重新安排为almost half of that group. Of that group提前是为了承接上文. IV. Grammar Ellipsis:
1. 并列复合句中省略主语或谓语, 或同时省略主语和谓语 2. 限制性定语从句中, 做宾语的关系代词可以省略
3. 状语从句中, 从句中的主语和谓语是 “人称代词+be”的形式, 而且人称与主句的主语一
致的情况下, 可以省略从句中的主语
4. 在as…as…, than的比较状语从句中, 常省略一部分成分 5. 在the more…, the more…的句型中常省略动词be
6. 在if引导的非真实性条件从句中, 可省略if, 但此时从句必须把had, should, were等放在
