When Mount St. Helens broke out at 8:32 a.m. on May 18, 1980, Washington-based Bruce Nelson and Sue Ruff, both 22, were camping with four friends on the banks of the state's Green River--a probably safe 14 miles north of the volcano eating marshmallows for breakfast. But the anger of St. Helens spared nothing in her reach, and within minutes nearly every tree in 15 miles had been destroyed out of the ground.
Nelson and Ruff were blown into a deep hole left by a up-rooted tree. After the violent explosion ended, the couple hid under a pile of debris (残骸) as huge ice pieces fell from the sky. Later, they heard two of their friends, Brian Thomas and Dan Balch, calling for help. Balch had been severely burned by a heat molten rock, which had melted the flesh off his arms, and he had no shoes. Thomas had been hit by a tree, which broke his back. Nelson and Ruff made a safe place for Thomas, walked Balch to the river, and then began walking through hot, knee-high ash to find help.
That night, they were found by emergency helicopters and rescued. Nelson argued with the National Guard pilot until he agreed to take him back up to the camp to get his friends. By then, Balch had been given an extra pair of shoes by a group of passing survivors and had walked out with them, and Thomas was later sent away by a small helicopter. Five days after the explosion, the police agreed to fly Nelson back up to his camp to look for his other two friends, Terry Crall and Karen Varner, who were still missing. He found them in their tent, Crall's arm wrapped protectively over Varner--both dead, with a tree on their bodies.

In the animal kingdom, weakness can bring about aggression in other animal. This sometimes happens with humans also. But I have found that my weakness brings out the kindness in people. I see it every day when people hold doors for me, pour cream into my coffee, or help me to put on my coat. And I have discovered that it makes them happy.
From my wheelchair experience, I see the best in people, but sometimes I feel sad because those who appear independent miss the kindness I see daily. They don’t get to see this soft side of others often; we try every way possible to avoid showing our weakness, which includes a lot of pretending. But only when we stop pretending we’re brave or strong do we allow people to show the kindness that’s in them.
Last month, when I was driving home on a busy highway, I began to feel unwell and drove more slowly than usual. People behind me began to get impatient and angry, with some speeding up alongside me, horning (按喇叭) or even shouting at me. At the moment I decided to do something I had never done in twenty four years of driving. I put on the car flashlights and drove on at a really low speed.
No more angry shouts and no more horns! When I put on my flashlights, I was saying to other drivers, “I have a problem here. I am weak and doing the best I can.” And everyone understood. Several times, I saw drivers who wanted to pass. They couldn’t get around me because of the stream of passing traffic. But instead of getting impatient and angry, they waited, knowing the driver in front of them was in some way weak.
Sometimes situations call for us to act strong and brave even when we don’t feel that way. But those are few and far between. More often, it would be better if we don’t pretend we feel strong when we feel weak or pretend that we are brave when we are scared. 46. The author has discovered that people will feel happy when ______. A. they offer their help B. they receive others’ help C. they feel others’ kindness D. they show their weakness 47. The author feels sad sometimes because ______.
A. he has a soft heart B. he relies much on others
C. some people pretend to be kind D. some people fail to see the kindness in others 48. What did the other drivers do when they saw the flashlights?
A. They speed up to pass. B. They waited with patience.
C. They tried their best to help. D. They put on their flashlights too. 49. In this passage, the author advises us to ______.
A. handle problems by ourselves B. accept help from others C. admit our weakness D. show our bravery 50. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. A Wheelchair Experience. B. Weakness and Kindness. C. Weakness and Strength D. A Driving Experience

PALO AITO, California—“Switching off the television may help prevent children from getting fatter—even if they do not change their diet or increase the amount they exercise,” US researchers said last week.
A study of 192 third and fourth grades, generally aged eight and nine, found that children who cut the number of hours spent watching television gained nearly two pounds(0.91 kg) less over a one-year period than those who did not change their television diet.
“The findings are important because they show that weight loss can only be the result of a reduction in television viewing and not any other activity,” said Thomas Robinson, a pediatrician(儿
科专家) at Stanford University.
“American children spend an average of more than four hours per day watching television and videos or playing games, and rates of childhood being very fat have doubled over the past 20 years,” Robinson said.
In the study, presented this week to the Pediatric Academic Societies’ annual meeting in San Francisco, the researchers persuaded about 100 of the students to reduce their television viewing by one-quarter to one-third.
Children watching fewer hours of television showed a significantly smaller increase in waist size and had less body fat than other students who continue their normal television viewing, even though neither group ate a special diet nor took part in any extra exercise.
“One explanation for the weight loss could be the children unstuck to the television may simply have been moving around and burning off calories,” Robinson said.
“Another reason might be due to eating fewer meals in front of the television. Some studies have suggested that eating in front of the TV encourages people to eat more,” Robinson added. 51. The purpose of the first two paragraphs is ______.
A. to report the time children spend watching TV B. to show that more TV time leads to getting fatter C. to tell us the best way to reduce weight D. to introduce the background of the research
52. According to the passage, the time American children usually spend on watching TV ____.
A. is more than four hours a day B. is less than four hours a day
C. doubled in the last twenty years D. is more than on any other activities 53. The time the 100 children spend on TV every day is about _______ in the study.
A. a quarter of an hour B. four hours C. three hours D. one hour 54. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage ? A. Weight increase owes to the result of a reduction in TV viewing.
B. The percentage of children getting fatter has doubled in the last 20 years. C. Children usually eat less while watching TV. D. Children usually eat nothing while watching TV. 55. The main idea of the passage would be ______. A. less TV time helps reduce children’s weight
B. fewer meals is a must in reducing children’s weight C. the less you eat, the thinner you will be
D. more exercise is of great benefit to reduce weight

For the first time in Hong Kong’s history, an entertainer has been written into middle school textbooks. He is considered one of the best actors in Hong Kong. Yes, he is Chow Yun-fat.
The example of his long hard struggle for success has been used in a chapter in a Hong Kong middle school textbook. Using his experience, students can learn to make the most of their time and to grab every opportunity to succeed.
On hearing about this, Chow said happily, “I really hope that my experiences can make young people understand that one should not be afraid of difficulties and setbacks , for they are the only way to success.”
Indeed, Chow has travelled a long and difficult path to reach his success. In 1955, he was born into a poor family in Hong Kong. When he was 17, he had to leave school. He worked in a number of jobs—as a postman, camera salesman and taxi driver. These experiences paved the way for him to play all kinds of roles later in life.
